I've been running this at FNM for about 6 weeks now, split the time between a super-competitive big shop and a fairly casual but small shop. At the casual shop I've taken 2 second-places and a first, and the big shop has seen me run 3-2 or 4-1 each time.
Also, I put it together without netdecking -- only to find that people are running real similar stuff over in the competitive forums and some guy named Kibler ran it on youtube a couple times. I can haz originality points anyway?
Also, minor rant -- I wouldn't consider myself a competitive player but there's no UG splinterfright thread in the regular standard subforums and I'm not sure if it'd be okay to start one. Grrrr.
I'm playing a Boros deck that I got from the Planechase expansion, with a few modifications. He's playing a Dragon deck he's been working on for a while.
First few turns are land, go. At turn three, I drop Battlegate Mimic. He land-go's again, and I drop Boros Guildmage to swing for four. He takes it, and puts out a Dragon Broodmother on his turn. I swing for two, holding a Double Cleave in my hand in hopes that he'll block with the biggie. Unfortunately he only blocked with his little guy, so I gave my Mimic first strike via my guildmage's second ability. His little dragon died and I was sitting kinda un-pretty.
His turn, he puts in another 1/1 dragon token... and drops Protean Hydra. I says bad words. He laughs and casts Dragonmaster Outcast. My boss has a thing for mythics, methinks. I'm sitting over here with two creatures, one of whom is tapped, and 5 lands, all tapped. Double Cleave is still in my hand and will pretty handily clean up any blockers... but not attackers. He passes the turn (cost him the game, as you'll see in a sec). I draw into Boros Signet Quickly counting potential mana, I see that I can cast Akroma's Vengeance next turn, if my Signet stays! I drop the signet, casually, and swing for two with my Mimic. He blocks with one of his tokens, and I first-strike with it again using the Guildmage.
Deciding turn.
He has three 1/1 dragons in play (I still have only a guildmage and a mimic, with the double cleave and the Akroma's Vengeance in my hand), his Hydra, his Broodmother dragon, and a Khalni Gem that's been keeping his mana afloat this whole game.
He drops Crucible of fire and I say bad words. No one has taken damage since the first hit for four, way in the early stages. He joyfully declares all his flying dragons as attackers... three 4/4s and a 7/7. Adds up to 19. I have no choice but to take the damage. Ouch.
I packed a Gideon Jura yesterday. I want to turn him into more booster packs. I'm aware of what he's worth, love the card, but can't justify keeping him.
I also have a Knight of the Reliquary. Same deal as with the Gideon; booster packs would get me more cool stuff for decks and since I'm not a tournament player, I have little use for money cards such as these. I'd consider trades (elf cards are my weakness ) but would kinda rather turn them into boosters (meaning money or boosters themselves would be ideal).
This is a storage post for my current decklists. CC is welcome, but I'm a very budget player (as in, I-get-my-cards-from-troll-and-toad's-one-penny-per-card-bin-budget-player), so take it easy
Most of these decks are competitive with my boss's and co-workers' decks, save the blue/black which I think it's almost time to just scrap.
Deck 4: Mono-green Elves (work in progress, I've got more cards on the way that'll significantly change this deck's look). Elves have been my favorite since I started playing Magic with an elves vs. goblins set that a buddy of mine had, and I'm hoping to recreate that deck with a few of my own twists. (60-card)
Deck 5: Blue-Black. This was my very first deck I ever made, as a Grixis, then I removed red from it. It's not that good anymore, and I'm thinking of scrapping it for cards for my newer Jund and Ally decks. (60-card)
Deck 6: Red-White. This is the only preconstructed deck I've ever purchased, and it's alright. It's the Planechase deck, and I've only changed out a few cards. Not my favorite, but it's a solid contender in the right hands (mine ) (64-card)
So that's my current deck collection. I tinker with them a lot (in fact, while typing this list I changed the blue/black and red/white decks a bit), so it's not likely to stay accurate for very long
