A friend of mine was watching me experiment with my Elfball deck, and wanted to try it out himself. Lent it to him, and he seemed to enjoy it enough to want to buy into it. He's even more of a Johnny than I am, though with far less of a budget to work with. In an attempt to help him out, I tried to construct an Elfball deck using two colors instead of the mono-green that was my Ezuri.

I decided to go with two colors and a budget of $100 after an optimized Heavily Played search from TCGPlayer. While there are some pieces to Elfball combo that are non-negotiable (Staff of Domination being the big one), I found that there are some somewhat functional replacements for the other things which serve as signatures for Green decks.

The nice thing about White is that it offers another cheap wincon that functions well for the tribe (Mirror Entity), another 1CMC mana dork (Avacyn's Pilgrim), and also gives one cheap tutor for combo pieces (Steelshaper's Gift) and two more semi-cheap tutors for other pieces (Eladamri's Call, Sterling Grove). However, given our budget, we only have enough free space to run Steelshaper. Still, those two are very obvious upgrades to the deck, with Call matching Demonic Tutor in CMC and speed (though you have to reveal the card and it has to be a creature) and the other being storable.

Speaking of tutors, Elves has a bunch of cheap ones available even without getting into White. Elvish Harbinger doubles as a mana dork, Skyshroud Poacher can duck a lot of things by bringing stuff into play directly, Wirewood Herald can tutor for Caller of the Claw in response to a boardwipe, and Fierce Empath can bring you an array of useful 6+ CMC creatures.

Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx and Elvish Guidance won't match Gaea's Cradle in power, but you'd potentially run the two anyway AND they still can do the big mana plays that Cradle allows. Though both will have to be used a bit later than Cradle can, and Elvish Guidance in particular can get you two-for-one'd. Still, having big mana through lands as an option even without Cradle is great.

In addition to big mana, our various land tutors let us fetch everything from removal to unblockability to land destruction.

Genesis Hydra isn't anywhere near Genesis Wave in power, but it can dig just as deeply to find you what you need. We've also managed to squeeze enough budget to get Wave itself.

You'll need more mana to get Primordial Sage going compared to Glimpse of Nature, but it should be noted that it can be fetched with Empath.

If you can't red zone your way to victory, then Hurricane and Squall Line provide a way to just slam the whole table for big damage. Sure, you might also kill yourself, but you'll have done a nice impression of a Heartless Hidetsugu deck while doing it.

Staff of Domination is, in my opinion, mostly non-negotiable as it's both card draw AND another infinite enabler. You still pack some power in the deck without it (Umbral Mantle can do the infinite mana thing too) but it does enough that it deserves to be slotted in despite being over $10 in price.

They're not Craterhoof Behemoth or even Ezuri, Renegade Leader, but Chameleon Colossus and the aforementioned Mirror Entity can serve as ways to handily take out an opponent through damage while doubling as "Elves," meaning they're fetchable by our plethora of budget Elf tutors. Though Colossus does not have Trample or some form of Evasion, you can tutor it up for him using a land tutor for Rogue's Passage or utilize Triumph of the Hordes. For the amount of mana you'd spend on Hoof or a one-activation Ezuri, you can pump your forces up to 5/5 which can sometimes be enough. But more importantly, Entity enables more combos.

We have three main haste enablers in this deck: Concordant Crossroads, Thousand-Year Elixir, and Lightning Greaves. Each of them can enable infinite mana on the turn you've got the mana and the cards to start the combo, and are all quite cheap. That Green has the extra haste enabler helps us significantly. Joraga Warcaller also enables a combo with Devoted Druid in particular, but it requires a bit more mana to truly get going as a wincon.

    Example combos:

Wirewood Symbiote + Devoted Druid + Joraga Warcaller (Kicked at least once) + Greaves/Crossroads/Elixir
Tap and untap Druid for 3+ mana, return it with Wirewood Symbiote, recast it and then tap it again for infinite mana since Devoted Druid only costs 2. Warcaller also fits as a potential wincon here since it can also be returned by Wirewood Symbiote and then recast with infinite multikickers.

Wirewood Symbiote + Mirror Entity + Megadork (Tapping for at least 3 Mana)
Tap the Megadork for 3 mana or more. Turn all creatures into an Elf with Mirror Entity (you only have to pay 1 for now). Untap the Megadork with Symbiote targeting itself for bouncing back to hand since it's now an Elf itself. Recast Symbiote, retap the Megadork for 3 mana, re-use Mirror Entity's ability, untap Megadork and bounce Symbiote back, and repeat ad infinitum. Note that, again, a wincon is built in here with Mirror Entity as a way to dump all the mana.

Megadork (Tapping for at least 4 Mana) + Umbral Mantle
Tap for 4, untap spending 3, tap for 4, surplus 1-- repeat for infinite mana. At a large enough table with a bit of luck, Selvala herself might be able to keep this going and add some card draw (albeit symmetrical) to the mix as well.

Megadork (Tapping for at least 5 Mana) + Staff of Domination
Tapping for 5 will beat Staff of Domination's total tap and untap costs of 4 mana, netting you a surplus that you can repeat for infinite mana. You can use that surplus to draw your whole deck.

Hello. This is a deck that I thought of last night, not gonna lie. It's a  base, really, revolving around Hellbent. Anyone can build this deck and easily play around with the list. I imagine I went a little heavy on the discard, but really this is how I am going to practice building decks to play and enjoy.

Let's do a rundown of all of the cards I decided would be a best fit.

    Non-basic Lands:
    Keldon Megaliths.
Obvious, and wonderful ability for an early hand dump. It's also a consistent source of damage. 4 sounds about right, and we can change it up if need be.
    Howltooth Hollow
A menagerie of the spells you'll be playing are all about discarding, without a care who it is. 2 or 3 is a good number, as 1 is too many and 4 can be too slow.
    Dakmor Salvage
A wonderful discard target, and part of a combo since we'll be playing Raven's Crime. 3 is okay- we only want them when we need them.
Rix Maadi, Dungeon Palace. This is your starter for Hellbent. 1 is too few but 4 is too much. Like Howltooth Hollow, we want them to be helpful, but not be dependent. 2 or 3 is fine.
    Emptying your hand:
    Avatar of Discord
This is a 3 mana 5/3 beater. Since you want to spew your hand as fast as you can, this card will definitely help you. The discard so early can hurt if you have cards with the Madness effect, but creatures with Unearth will come in handy later. We'll be playing 4
    Keldon Halberdier/Mindstab
These are cheap suspend cards that can empty your hand turn one and be dangerous later, especially Mindstab. Whichever one you like most though, play 4 copies of.
    Rakdos Augermage
It's a wonderful card for this deck. You get to Peek at your opponents hand and discard whatever. Ya know? 2 is okay, as we have plenty of discarding already
    Hollowborn Barghest
This card is much easier to cast with Howltooth Hollow. Granted, it's a challenge to get your opponents hand that small. But once you do, it's a joy
    Raven's Crime
    3. One for each Dakmor Salvage. It's a reusable spell that empties your hand AND your opponents.
    Lightning Axe
This spell is a wonderful card to pitch to! One mana and a card to remove a blocker and carry on with life. I'll take 4, please
    Demonic Collusion
A tutor with a buyback cost of fuel? This card is too sweet to pass up.
With all of the discarding going on, what's the point if nothing is to benefit?
    Anthem of Rakdos
This card will forever be a wonderful card. And even more wonderful for this deck. If you can protect it with a Hideaway, you'll never have to worry about discarding it and can proceed to tearing apart your opponents hand.
    Whip of Erebos
With a ton of discard, you're bound to get some creatures in the grave. And with no other way of gaining life, Anthem of Rakdos can easily be your undoing without this
With 16 slots left, it's time to pick some juicy creatures.
    Gorgon Recluse
She'll be taking up 2 slots. She has madness which can be wonderful to play into, but it's double black. You can never expect to always have double black at the ready.
    Scourge Devil
Easy fodder for a quick discard that can unearth for the with. A miser's copy, since it's hardcast is 5. The effect can easily make itself up, though
    Reckless Wurm
Also being a 5 drop, I don't want 4. But it's madness is the same as Scourge Devil's Unearth, and since it has trample I want 2 or 3. But for the list, I'll put 2.
    Shambling Remains
I can't think of a reason not to play this card. This card is cheap, aggressive, and recurrable. And with a low cost for Unearth, you can easily pay the Unearth the turn after dropping an Avatar of Discord
    Hellspark Elemental
Like Shambling Remains, it's too good to pass up for what it does. It's cheap and aggressive and almost guarantees damage.
    Crypt Champion
This card has a lovely interaction with your graveyard. Try not to pitch it, because you can easily cast it for the red and get a Hellspark Elemental, Shambling Remains, a Scourge Devil, or even an Avatar of Discord. And if you target a creature with Unearth, you can get more than 2 uses by using Whip of Erebos on Crypt Champion to once again pull a monster from the graveyard. That's up to 4 uses of the same creature, multiple times! How is that a bad thing?
This deck will always lose to a steady control deck or a deck that can force out massive amounts of tokens. This sideboard can help you push through long-term strategies
    Rakdos Charm
This card handles graveyards and tokens perfectly. Or if your opponent is relying on an artifact for that last necessary source of mana or for the last bit of damage, you're covered.
    Syphon Life
This takes the place of Raven's Crime as necessary. It's very crucial though, that this spell is used to put you over the edge, since it will exhaust your mana
    Call to the Netherworld
Since most of your creatures are black, this spell just makes sense. If you dredged away a Crypt Champion or have no way to return a Hollowborn Barghest to your hand, here you are.
    Fiery Temper
This will easily and happily punish decks that lack immediate creature prescence the turn before an Avatar or Augermage.
    Sire of Instanity
If you just want to start chucking spells for cheap and hitting hard, there is no better choice. This card goes in if you start trading out creatures for spells, as he is recurrable and is very powerful when Hollowborn Barghest is on the field or under a Howltooth Hollow

I have 2 decks for modern right now, G/B Elves, and Infect. I frickin love infect. And look at how bloody cheap I started it:

    DeckMagic OnlineOCTGN2ApprenticeBuy These Cards
    My First Infect Deck
    4 Glistener Elf
    4 Blight Mamba
    4 Ichorclaw Myr
    4 Necropede
    2 Rot Wolf

    2 Rancor
    4 Apostle's Blessing
    4 Groundswell
    4 Mutagenic Growth
    4 Predator's Strike
    4 Vines of Vastwood

    20 Forest

Infect damage only has to get to 10. There are many spells that pump your creatures waaay up into the redzone so that it's a one time swing. Always wait to cast Predator's Strike because then you can maximize damage output.

For anyone wanting to get into magic, this is a fairly decent deck. 1) almost all of the creatures have reminder text. Except for Rancor. Easiest way to remember Trample is if a chicken decides to cross the road and a rhino doesn't like the question, the rhino runs the chicken down, and tramples the chicken under his feet. Seems simple enough, right?

I play a much different list for modern play, but hey, we all have to start somewhere.

again, I'm very happy to help new players get into magic or help players get into modern and EDH. Also with spoilers, I like to evaluate a few cards for prerelease and draft, since that's where I see most of the new players.

FOREWORD: I did not intend to spell the blog name wrong.

Hello. I uh, well, am the king of casual decks in my area. Basically, a group of friends and I say "No more than $30 on a deck" and we have a blast with it. Doing this has actually helped me be a better builder, since Modern and EDH are my loves. I have one friend who will only ever play control, but likes standard. So maybe I'll post lists of my ideas. That said, I do enjoy building decks. I do a lot of concepts in my free time, but don't play test many of them. Why? Because that's frickin expensive to buy like every other common and uncommon ever printed and have them mailed to my house. Highschool never prepared me for deck building. Recently though, I built an Angels themed deck for my girlfriend, since she's new to all of this. I'm also a judge, by the way. 3rd level. So explaining the rules is easy, but you'd think that she would explode if she could tell you what Calciform Pools does and how to effectively use it.

So if you're into modern, EDH, like old cards, or want to learn how to have fun with Magic but don't want to spend more than $10, I think I can help you out.
