June will see the release of the next Universes Beyond set. According to a new post by Wizards at Daily MTG, a new event aimed at teaching new players how to play Magic: The Gathering is coming the weekend of June 12th. Avengers Academy will use all-new welcome decks featuring popular Marvel heroes in Two-Headed Giant team battles.
Each of the Welcome Decks being released with Marvel Super Heroes will contain two 30-card half-decks. One half of the deck will be the featured color and super hero while the other half is intended to pair with it for a full 60-card deck. At the Avengers Academy events, a new player will be teamed up with a more experienced player and each will play with one 30-card half-deck.
The Welcome Decks being released will feature:
- Black Panther - White
- Iron Man - Blue
- Black Widow - Black
- Spider-Man - Red
- The Hulk - Green
Avengers Academy is intended to be non-competitive in nature. The event will be hosted by WPN stores but will not include rounds or standings instead favoring a more casual vibe friendly to people who are just learning how to play. Players who register for both Avengers Academy and a Two-Headed Giant prerelease event will receive a pair of wearable Loki horns at Prerelease
Avengers Academy events begin June 12th, prerelease events begin June 19th and the full Marvel Super Heroes set will be released on June 26th.
