New Welcome Decks Are Coming To Magic: The Gathering

The last time Wizards printed new Welcome Decks was the Spider-Man themed decks that were released alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man. Now according to an announcement on Daily MTG, Wizards of the Coast is preparing once again to release new Welcome Decks. These five decks releasing alongside Secrets of Strixhaven will each utilize one of the colors in Magic and contain 40 cards. All five decks will feature cards from 2024’s Foundations set. WPN stores are not allowed to sell Welcome Decks but stores are encouraged to keep them in stock as a free resource for teaching newcomers how to play Magic.

White - Protection & Order

Each Welcome Deck will have a theme and include a rare card that ties the deck together. The White Welcome Deck features Angels with flying, life-gain mechanics like lifelink, and is very reliably all about protection and order. Therefore, it includes Lyra Dawnbringer

Blue - Deceit & Intellect

Spinx

Playing blue in Magic is all about controlling the pace of the game. The Blue Welcome Deck zeroes in on that by including control spells and creatures that allow for card draw and cheaper instants and sorceries. Tying all of these ideas all together is Sphinx of the Final Word.

Black - Death & Decay

Black’s overarching theme is death and decay. This is evident in the Welcome Deck by showcasing cards that have deathtouch and others that can return cards from the graveyard back to the battlefield. Creatures often cause decay by having abilities that weaken your opponent’s creatures. The rare card to tie it all together is Massacre Wurm.

Red - Fury & Chaos

Drakuseth

Red is the color of burn decks. Quick and chaotic gameplay defines what it means to play red Magic. The cards in the Red Welcome Deck include 6 burn spells, a thunder of Dragons and a few other explosive creatures to command. In the rare slot is Drakuseth, Maw of Flames to tie it all together.

Green - Life & Nature

The mechanics in green spells tend to be all about nature and life’s abundance. In the Green Welcome Deck, that means creatures that can also tap for G. As green magic pulls from the earth, it can also strengthen its creatures. In fact, many of the spells in the Green Welcome Deck are designed for either resource enrichment or creature buffing. Vizier of the Menagerie is slotted in to take advantage of those abilities.

Secrets of Strixhaven and the five Welcome Decks release together on April 24th.
