Wizards of the Coast announced a new update to the Banned & Restricted list via an announcement on Daily MTG. The announcement written by Carmen Komplarens, Jadine Komplarens, Gavin Verhey, and Daniel Xu includes information for every major format in Magic: The Gathering. While the announcement acts as more of a positive status update from last month’s broader adjustment, there was one change made to the popular digital-only format, Historic.
Daniel Xu wrote the update for Historic, mostly confirming that adjustments made in February have allowed Jund and Dimir decks to flourish. They continued by explaining that Food Chain was introduced to Historic as a special guest from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles without considering its interaction with Sigardian Evangel. This was creating the ability to start a game winning combo on turn 3 which Wizards would prefer not to be possible.

The combo in question here is that Sigardian Evangel says “When Sigardian Evangel enters the battlefield, conjure a card named Sigardian Evangel into your hand. Discard that card at the beginning of the next end step.” Food Chain on the other hand allows you to create mana equal to the mana value of an exiled creature. In theory, you could create multiple copies of Sigardian Evangel by casting the conjured version of the card before its rules require it to be discarded from your hand.

Due to Wizards’ philosophy of avoiding turn three winning combos and also in the hopes of avoiding consistent turn two combos, Food Chain was banned in Historic. No other cards were banned in any format in digital or tabletop. Carmen Komplarens announced that a further explanation of today’s announcement will be explored tomorrow morning at 10am PT on WeedklyMTG over on Twitch.
