Yesterday, the first bit of lore was revealed for next month’s Secrets of Strixhaven on Daily MTG. Mark Rosewater has said on his personal blog, that Secrets of Strixhaven will have previews soon but the Magic community seems ready for Wizards’ next in-universe set. The new story has fans at the magicTCG subreddit speculating about the future of Magic: The Gathering.
The speculation follows mono-white Liliana making a mysterious appearance at the end of Lorwyn Eclipsed. Liliana, traditionally a mono-black character, showed up right at the end of episode 7 and appeared to… herself.
Now, in Secrets of Strixhaven, Ral Zarek has appeared but not quite like himself. Ral Zarek is normally an Izzet planeswalker — Blue and Red. However, in Secrets of Strixhaven, Ral seems to be the Orzhov colors of White and Black. Redditors also noted that he appears to not be acting quite right, leaning into more sinister and deceptive character traits than is normal.
While nothing has been confirmed by Wizards and there is certainly more story to come, Redditors are convinced that this shift in character colors and personalities is a sign of things to come. Reality Fracture is coming later this year and we know shockingly little about what it will entail. Many fans are speculating that Reality Fracture is going to be a multiverse story that shows us the “what if” of Magic characters and stories. The fact that Ral and Liliana have already teased alternate versions of themselves feeds into this theory.
Whether or not there’s anything to the theories remains to be seen. Following the recent release of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Secrets of Strixhaven is the next in-universe set. It comes out in late April. Reality Fracture will be the next in-universe set after that with a release date slated for early October.
