Magic: The Gathering has been around since 1993 and the fantasy world Richard Garfield and Wizards of the Coast has created is ripe for media more than just a collectible trading card game. Comics like the mini series focused on Elspeth or Jace confirm that people are craving these stories to be told. The narrative that releases in multiple parts every time an in-universe set is released shows that Magic’s story and lore matter.
Previously it was announced that Netflix was working with Star Trek Picard season 3 showrunner, Terry Matalas, to bring Magic: The Gathering to life in an animated series. From the little that was shown at MagicCon Vegas, it does appear that Chandra will be a key piece of the puzzle in Matalas’ vision of Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast is actively involved with that series.
Now, rumors of a live action movie are being confirmed in an exclusive by Patrick Cavanaugh at MovieWeb. Matt Johnson, the co-creator of the mockumentary sitcom web series, Nirvana The Band The Show, has been tapped to be the director. Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald are also attached to the project in a writing capacity.
Matt Johnson told MovieWeb, “I'm still in the middle of it, that's very much happening. It's the biggest project I've ever been a part of in my life and I'm amazed it's happening. As of today, as of this conversation, it's very much full speed ahead."
Matt Johnson’s Nirvana The Band The Show The Movie is currently in theaters. It will serve as a continuation of the popular web series. At this point, no further details about the Magic: The Gathering Movie are available.
