Magic’s Companion App Is Receiving A Major Overhaul

If you’ve ever played in organized play — Prerelease, draft, sealed, constructed, etc — you’ve likely interacted with the Companion App.  The Companion App is how you check in and participate with events at your local WPN store.  After checking in, the app will also give you your matchups, timers, and you can opt to use the in-app life counter for you and your opponent.  Now according to an announcement at Daily MTG, beginning the week of February 16, the Companion App will feature Player Profiles.

The Player Profile will allow you to see events you’ve previously participated in and plan for upcoming events.  You’ll have the option to set favorite stores and subscribe to information in a personalized inbox. Your event history will include important information about the event like the name of it, the WPN store that hosted it, that date, and in some cases, the match results though it won’t show round-specific matchups. This information is only able to be seen by you and isn’t going to appear on a feed for others in your Magic circle.

Bookmarking your favorite stores will make it easier to access them in the app later which will be useful if you frequent more than one store due to your location or travel habits.  The inbox will be an in-app option for you to see announcements of upcoming events like prerelease and FNM.  The inbox will only be available on the mobile app at launch. This means you won’t be able to access your inbox from your desktop computer.

Wizards hasn’t given an exact time-line but has stated that more updates are coming this year.
