The first pro tour of 2026 is now behind us and Christoffer Larsen is the victor. Larsen competed in best of 5 matches with his Dimir Excruciator deck. A third of all decks played in the Pro Tour were Badgermole Cub powered decks but the top 8 showcased a broader variety of different decks and playstyles. The top 8 competitors in this Pro Tour were:
- Christoffer Larsen — Dimir Excruciator
- Toni Portolan — Temur Harmonizer
- Eduardo Sajgalik — Izzet Elementals
- Marco Belacca — Jeskai Control
- Guglielmo Lupi — Five-Color Rhythm
- Francisco Sanchez — Izzet Lessons
- Luis Salvatto — Dimir Excruciator
- Cyprien Tron — Bant Airbending
The Standard metagame still heavily favors Izzet decks and Larsen would meet up two of them in the top 8 — Francisco Sanchez’s Izzet Lessons deck and Eduardo Sajgalik’s Izzet Elementals deck. All three of his Sunday matchups would go to game 5 with him claiming victory in the finals against Toni Portolan’s Temur Harmonizer deck.
In the finals against Toni Portolan, it seemed possible that Larsen would win in 4 successfully casting Doomsday Excruciator. Unfortunately for Larsen, Portolan would mount an impressive comeback on his next turn. After taking a mulligan at the start of game 5, Larsen’s Dimir Excruciator deck worked exactly as intended allowing him to defeat Toni Portolan’s Temur Harmonizer deck in a 3-2 victory.
The next event for competitive players is the Magic Spotlight Series — Lorwyn Eclipsed Limited in Toronto, Canada. The event will be played February 6-8 at Face to Face Games.
