Mark Rosewater is the head designer for Magic: The Gathering. He’s been working for Wizards of the Coast in some capacity for the last 30 years so he knows the ins and outs of Magic arguably better than anyone else at the company. He dispenses his vast knowledge and wisdom of all things MTG on his popular Tumblr blog, Blogatog.
On Wednesday the 17th, Rosewater called for an impromptu “Request Day” where his approximately 73,000 readers could send in requests for things they’d like to see come to Magic. The requests came in droves all day long and have continued into today. Some requests had to do with color identities, creature types, tokens, and even narrative requests like the user, coboney, who asked for a set focused on telling the story of Weatherlight (OG) in modern — a request that Rosewater particularly enjoyed.
During this influx of requests, most of the requests were responded to with a smile or a simple “thanks for writing in.” However, one user, iamthespineofmybook, made a request for future Commander decks. His request reads, “Could there be a set of Partners that is more than two cards as options with the new incarnation of the mechanic? Like, if the Turtles got four cards with Partner-TMNT. You can still only have two Commanders, but they can be any two of the four Turtles.”

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Commander deck has five combinations but they all rely on partnering with Leonardo. The request, in the example scenario, would make any Ninja Turtle commander able to partner with any other Ninja Turtle commander.
Rosewater’s response was more than a simple “thanks” and gave hope that a future Commander deck could feature multiple partner combinations. He said “Multiple cards that can interact as partners is a possibility.” Whether something is already in the works for a future set or if he only spoke about what could be on the horizon has yet to be seen.
