Mark Rosewater Teases New Information For Lorwyn Eclipsed

This morning on his popular personal blog, Blogatog, Mark Rosewater shared some new information about the upcoming Lorwyn Eclipsed set.  Lorwyn Eclipsed is set to release on January 23rd, 2026, and is the first of seven sets to be released during the year.

It’s important to note that Rosewater isn't giving full spoilers and even says in his blog post that the information is only partial.  This, of course, means there is room for speculation and nothing concrete, but just enough to wet the palette for those excited for Lorwyn Eclipsed.

Some Things to Expect

The first on a list of things to expect was a planeswalker that makes Kithkin creature tokens.  Because of the enchanted forest feel, one might speculate this would be a Nissa or Elspeth.  However, because the planes of Lorwyn and Shadowmoor are coexisting now, the possibilities are endless. It’s also possible we’re getting a new planeswalker specific to Lorwyn.

Another teased item was — a keyword introduced in 2025 returns.  In another post, one user jokingly suggested "Welcome back, Start Your Engines!" to which Rosewater playfully responded, “Maybe. : )” Other, more plausible possibilities would be endure, warp, void, harmonize, or mobilize.

The other items on his list of things to expect were:

  • kindred reprints
  • some counters in the set: charge, dream, flying, first strike, indestructible, and lifelink
  • another card is the Thirst for ________ series
  • another card that makes something a Coward
  • a card that tutors every turn
  • a new card that copies triggers
  • a number of Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block mechanics have cameos
  • some tokens in the set: 1/1 colorless Shapeshifter, 1/1 blue/black Faerie, 2/2 black and green Elf, 3/3 green Elk, and 3/4 green Treefolk

Rules Text

Control players can rejoice as at least one card will feature rules text that reads, “Counter all spells your opponents control.”  We don’t know if this will be a static rule on a Legendary Creature or an enchantment or if it will be an instant intended for use on multiple spells already on the stack.  Modern players would be thrilled to have a way to answer storm decks.

Another card that is almost certain to be green reads, “Double all damage that sources you control of the chosen type would deal.”  Green plays really nice with creature heavy decks because of its ability to make powerful creatures very quickly.  I would be more surprised if it weren’t green.

The other Rules Text teased were:

  • “As this artifact enters, choose Elemental, Elf, Faerie, Giant, Goblin, Kithkin, Merfolk, or Treefolk.”
  • “where X is the difference between its power and toughness.”
  • “Spend only to cast spells with a mana value 4 or greater.”
  • “If this is the third time this ability has resolved this turn,”
  • “This creature enters with six -1/-1 counters.”
  • “At the beginning of each end step, if you put a counter on a creature this turn,”
  • “You may cast that card without paying its mana cost if the spell’s mana value is less than or equal to the amount of life you gained this turn.”
  • “Add X {G} or X {W} where X is the number of other creatures you control.”

Creature Types

None of the creature types that Rosewater teased are new to Magic:The Gathering but a few are returning from the last trip to Lorwyn in the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor blocks in 2007 and 2008. Specifically,, Ouphe, Noggle, and Kithkin have only appeared in Modern Horizons, and have been completely unused since 2008 otherwise.

Here is the full list of creature type lines being teased by Rosewater:

  • Kithkin Ranger
  • Elemental Scout
  • Faerie Assassin
  • Noggle Rogue
  • Goblin Sorcerer
  • Ouphe
  • Giant Mercenary
  • Treefolk Cleric
  • Horse Serpent
  • Legendary Creature – Elf Faerie Noble

It’s interesting to note that the Elf Faerie Noble is a Legendary Creature. At the end of the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block, Oona, Queen of the Fae was defeated but her essence lived on.  Could Rosewater be teasing a return of the villainous Oona to Lorwyn?

Card Names

Some card names were also revealed in Rosewater’s tease.  These card names were revealed without any context whatsoever but it’s probably fair to say that card names like “Scuzzback Scrounger” and “Flitterwing Nuisance” are creatures. What has a bit more mystery are card names like “Bark of Doran” or “Moonglove Extractor” which could be artifacts, enchantments, or sorceries.

The full list of card names teased is:

  • Bark of Doran
  • Champions of the Perfect
  • Chaos Spewer
  • Flitterwing Nuisance
  • Gilt-Leaf’s Embrace
  • Glister Bairn
  • Mirrorform
  • Moonglove Extractor
  • Moonshadow
  • Scuzzback Scrounger

Lorwyn Eclipsed releases worldwide on January 23, 2026. The debut stream on Twitch will happen on January 5th.
