Mark Rosewater is Open to Pre-con Commander Deck Ideas

The first Commander pre-cons were released in 2011. Since that time, pre-cons for Magic’s most popular format have improved in quality. They’ve also become a staple in the Magic eco-system.  Now, Mark Rosewater, the Head Designer for Magic: The Gathering says he is open to new ideas.

Rosewater, who just celebrated 30 years with Wizards of the Coast, was asked on his personal blog, Blogatog, by the user qsh123 “are we allowed to request themes for commander decks or no?” Rosewater replied, “Yes, you can recommend themes. Also include what colors you’d like the deck to have.”

In the last three days since that question was asked, Blogatog has become a hotbed of new commander ideas. Rosewater, true to form, has responded to many of them, thanking people for their input and occasionally asking a follow-up question.

Other requests were given tangible feedback like the user exalted-boda, who asked for a Beebles deck. Rosewater said, “I need to get Beebles back in black border first. I’m working on it.” That kind of statement fueled a high number of likes and some comments, like the user certified_orzhov_player, who responded by saying, “RETURN OF THE BEEBLES??”

Rosewater receives so many questions every day that it’s unlikely he responds to every single one. One user — lotsofpeoplehavequestions — asked “Are you replying to all the deck theme requests you're taking note of, or are you also taking note of themes you aren't replying to?” Rosewater confirmed, “I’m reading everything, not just what I reply to.”

Perhaps you enjoy playing a specific color combination like Izzet or Dimir. Maybe you have a preference for specific keywords and mechanics like Edge of Eternities’ deck themed around proliferation.  It could be that you enjoy specific themes or creature types.  Whatever the case, it appears that Mark Rosewater is open to hearing your ideas, suggestions, and requests.  You can add your request or any other magic-related question at Blogatog, where he answers questions from players every day.
