Avatar: The Last Airbender Magic: The Gathering Set Announced for 2025 Alongside New Looks At Tarkir: Dragonstorm, More

MagicCon Chicago’s Magic: The Gathering preview panel is in the books, and we now have a complete picture of what Standard looks like for the rest of 2025. Alongside new looks at Tarkir: Dragonstorm and Edge of Eternities, Wizards of the Coast has announced its third Universes Beyond set of 2025 will be based on Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender.

The Arena tease from the end of last year was indeed true. Avatar: The Last Airbender will be released on November 21, 2025, and will be based on the cartoon that ran on Nickelodeon from 2005 to 2008. Like the upcoming Final Fantasy and Spider-Man sets, Avatar will be Standard legal, making it the sixth eligible set for the format this year. Outside of a quick teaser video, we don’t know much about the set, but Wizards has given us the following: “Master the elements and join your favorite characters for new adventures, iconic art, and an elemental showdown like never before.” There’s plenty of year ahead of us and two more MagicCons before the set releases, so stay tuned for more information down the road.

Way before we bend the elements, we’ll be flying with, and apparently Beholding dragons. The next Magic set to release is Tarkir: Dragonstorm, and we were treated with a glimpse at the story and a small preview of some cards from the set. Following Dragons of Tarkir, the people of Tarkir have since rebelled against the dragonlords and taken steps to revive the old clans who once ruled the land. Five clans will be represented in the set, allowing players to choose between the classic Tarkir three-color combinations to play with.

The previews revealed today include throwbacks to cards like Siege Rhino (in the form of the new Skirmish Rhino) and other big players from the previous Tarkir sets. Few players are bigger than Narset, who gets a new Legendary creature card called Narset, Jeskai Waymaster for URW with a cool ability to build around that forces you to use your cards or lose them. She’s a Human Monk with 3 power and 4 toughness that ditches your entire hand at the end of turn, but lets you draw for each spell you cast that turn.

The other big former-Planeswalker shown is the new mono-red Sarkhan, Dragon Ascendant, who comes down for 1R and asks you to Behold a Dragon to create a treasure on ETB. To Behold a Dragon, you simply choose a dragon on your side of the battlefield or reveal one from your hand. He also becomes a flying dragon and grows in size when more of your dragons land on the battlefield, sending a clear message about what you should be concerned with when building a deck around the new Sarkhan. Be prepared to behold dragons when Tarkir: Dragonstorm launches on April 11.

Finally, the other in-universe Magic product remaining for the year is Edge of Eternities, which brings players to the end of Multiverse for Magic’s first non-UN space set. We’re still a ways off from EoE’s release, which isn’t until August 1, but Wizards still opted to show off some new art for the set, which includes an aging Tezzeret, a glimmering space angel, and five beautiful full-art space lands, depicting different planets with an ominous black hole hovering in the background. Edge of Eternities’ story is set in the Sothera system and centers around this dying star.

Alongside the peek at the set’s art, the two Commander decks were also revealed. First is Counter Intelligence, a white, blue, and red deck that’s all about artifacts and proliferating. World Shaper is the name of the other deck supporting the Jund colors of black, red, and green, which wants to sacrifice lands and, as the box description puts it, “grow back stronger.” The art for the decks features future fantasy tech and alien creatures, respectively, leaning into the sci-fi nature of the set. Like Edge of Eternities, the Commander products are scheduled to drop in August.
