Legendary Entertainment Is Developing A Magic: The Gathering Movie And Television Universe

Today, Hasbro Entertainment and Legendary Entertainment announced that the two were partnering to create a new movie and television universe based in the Magic: the Gathering multiverse. The new venture tasks the studio that has, in recent years, helped to create some of the best adaptations for film (DUNE, DUNE Part 2, for example) in creating a compelling movie set within the vast lore and history of the Magic: the Gathering universe, as well as a television show and "other content" as things move forward.

"This is an exciting and complementary partnership, uniting one of the world’s most iconic brands with a powerful and proven steward," Hasbro Entertainment's Head of Film Zev Foreman said via a press release this afternoon. "[Magic: the Gathering] has inspired decades of epic world-building and creative storytelling. It is a perfect match for Legendary’s diversified approach to marquee IP, and we are excited to work together to build a whole new [Magic: the Gathering] universe."

This new addition to the growing entertainment brand surrounding Magic: the Gathering is being developed alongside the already announced Netflix animated series in the works with showrunner Terry Matalas. According to Hasbro, this is yet another piece to its growing storytelling puzzle, developing films and media based on the iconic card game. Magic's thirty years of storytelling within its card game, as well as the extended universe of books and other media that has released over the decades is prime real estate for anyone looking to tell compelling stories within. With iconic characters such as the Planeswalking allies of the Gatewatch to its various antagonists such as Nicol Bolas, the struggles between Urza and Mishra, or even just exploring the peoples of the various planes, there is plenty to build from.

No real timeline, whether this would be animated or live-action, or other details were shared at this time, but if you've been yearning for more Magic universe storytelling, there's plenty on the horizon.
