Mono black is only good if you get the good cards. You need bone splinters + butcher's ghoul (to not 2-for-1 yourself), good beaters (corpse trader / marrow bats) and homicidal seclusion. You win by basically using your abundant removal on their good creatures. It's very easy to be the only black drafter, draft mono-black and end up with a terrible deck because you didn't get enough of your key cards.
I've had a similar experience going "infinite" in Swiss drafts before switching to 8-4. With 8-4 I'm losing a ton more, but I'm playing good opponents who make me earn my wins. You need to ask yourself is it better to win against weaker competition, or to win less but against stronger competition.
I've also experienced the same weird signalling in 8-4s. The problem with AVR is everyone wants to be Blue/Green initially and everyone knows that. Midway through P1 everyone will attempt to switch into the same open colors, leaving everyone with weird 3-color monstrosities.
Thanks for the comments! It's currently using supernova prices.
I'm in the process of adding all the sets to the price list and movers and shakers. The challenge is finding a sane way to organize it since there are a lot of cards. Look for that in the near future. And I like the suggestion about adding prices to the movers and shakers; will do that too.
how does it track these prices? who are it's baselines, do you use supernova/mtgotraders? i like it as it is, but i dont know how often i'll use it, as i only speculate half the time.
also it would be nice if you expanded the sets to more than just standard, and also added a "current price" in the movers and Shakers column.. it's nice to see what each card went up or down, but the current price is always welcome
I've been running combusts instead of dismembers (3x in sideboard). The point of the card is to kill Hero of Bladeholds and Stitched Drakes. Against those decks paying 4 life is usually bad, and they have the possibility of countering you.
What it doesn't help you against are things like titans in wolf run and control decks. I don't normally side in dismember against those decks anyway, so this is not an issue. The only real disadvantage is missing dismembers in a mirror match (vs rufugee.. but I wouldn't pay 4 life in the mirror) and vs mono black (to kill crusaders). I run into way less mono-blacks than humans & illusions, so I think it's a good trade off.

I've been working on a site that tracks MTGO prices: http://www.mtggoldfish.com/
Features
Please give a whirl and let me know what you think. I have some more features in the pipeline but would love to hear what everyone thinks.
