I'm in the same boat, recently got back into standard since AVR release, and a billion things have changed. Delver no longer exists, control is great now, humans isn't as big of a thing (until Gatecrash hits the scene at least), tokens never really got big, and the 3-color decks... so many 3-color decks. A quick peek at the developing forum and there's a million things going on and plenty of things to like.
GWx and Rx decks seem to be doing the best, but there's no deck that dominates like UW Delver did. That's very good.
Sylvan Primordial is probably the closest thing to PT, and he's not even close - only getting basics is a HUGE difference, and not triggering on attack makes him easier to deal with.
Nifty card but I don't see how it's going to be insane without making a bad deck to begin with, at least in Standard. Really nice in EDH but that's not really much of an honor.
I'm seeing some fun EDH uses for Soul Ransom. Sepulchral Primordial, while I wish was a zombie, is going into my Skullbriar as soon as I get one...
Edit: Gruul Charm looks a little underwhelming.
Edit2: Are people not reading Soul Ransom right? You control the creature it's enchanting. You get to sac it at your whim (if you have two cards your willing to discard for the draw/sac effect). I don't see it as a very Type2 viable card (but it has me thinking of some fun Seance builds...) however it would be great for EDH.
The ability sacrifices Soul Ransom, not the creature.
Most of the time I see it as pay 4 mana exile 3 lands in your library which happens quite often. When I see a bigger target for Krosan Grip, etc. I aim for Endless Horizons anyway!
Why would you waste a KGrip on Endless Horizons? You don't have more important targets to hit, like Jitte/Swords/Skullclamp/Land Tax/Rhystic Study/Phyrexian Arena/Sylvan Library/Divining Top/Scroll Rack/Oblivion Stone/any number of actually good cards? Or do you just like getting rolled by good decks?
I like EH for being a decent card in Mono-W that can give you some card advantage and doesn't present a big target like Extraplanar Lens does. It's pretty good value, even if it is expensive. My meta has unusually light enchantment removal, though, so if megasweeps were more common here I might not be inclined to play it as much.
i think you are spot on with your observation. people don't know how the field will be, and it will definitely be different. he WILL get by a lot of removal, due to the reasons you stated, and vapor snag will NOT be an issue. i am very much a fan of this demon
I agree - he dodges the best removal spells so far (Abrupt Decay, Dreadbore, Mizzium Mortars, Ultimate Price), and 6/6 is a big enough body to smash most of the field. He'll still get Detained and bounced by Cyclonic Rift but that's okay.
I'm really glad they decided not to make Paincast the Rakdos mechanic. That would've just been bonkers.
Gilded Lotus is also fantastic. I also disagree with Phyrexian Arena. Just not a big fan of that card. Also: if you are playing Oblivion Ring, there is ZERO excuse for not playing Journey to Nowhere. You are going to hit creatures with O-Ring anyway, so why not play the cheaper version?
Because the reason people play O-ring is for catch-all removal. Planeswalkers, other enchantments, things that are just generally hard to remove. If you're looking for creature removal why don't you just play Swords to Plowshares or Path to Exile?
I just checked and the original Urza Serra Avatar is selling for 8 bucks and the foils are like $15.
I don't know if i'm missing something but is it just super popular with the casual crowd or some kind of EDH card?
Its hard to imagine this thing seeing play without evasion or an ETB ability..
Fat card and really good in casual lifegain decks, good with Fling, awesome in EDH, old card with smaller supply. I wish it had lifelink or at least vigilance so it might see some play but I don't think it will. I just traded for one too :\
So ive been trying to make a GA deck work... and ive been throwing things in trying to make the ramp more reliable. So I jammed in Sphere of the Suns and Solemn Simulacrum
And suddenly I found myself playing WRR except, its mono blue, and has a worse inkmoth back up plan.
(Instead of whipflare and slagstorm to deal with aggro im playing wurmcoils and batterskull)
And it works pretty good... but why would I play this?
Because instead of one Primeval Titan, why not three Wurmcoils?

Palisade Giant?
That's the point, yes.

Also Cloudstone Curio

Still trades with flipped Delver like a champ. I really like this card, especially at common.
