    What if you would pod it into a Twilight Shepherd....With Melira and a saccer you could just keep sacrificing Child of Alara to "untap" your pod for bigger creatures and bringing everything you podded that turn back into play.....just for giggles (might be better suited as just another combo in edh *shrugs*)

    I think you are right about land fetches being a good vibe for this guy, but I would think Fetching it from the graveyard would be slightly weaker in the majority of cases than the already amble land fetch creatures in green already which mill a land out of the way.

    If you have to force a default play condition for Cavern of Souls it should reflect what a reasonable person would do by default, however I would rather see a game rewound to the point of declaration if there is a fuss of which ability it was tapped for. It is the responsibility of both/all players to manage the game state properly.
