posted a message on Commander 2017 announcement -- Only 4 decks, based on popular tribes, not color wheel!
A creature class I really liked back in the day that could really use support is Nomads. Sadly don't think they're popular enough to see any new ones coming out.

That said I'm hoping for an Angel theme deck since they are my favorite creature type of all time.

Urza's block is always the period of time I think of when I think of great art in Magic. Boy do I miss those days. It's a shame we likely won't see anything like that again.

Well Wizards is certainly doing a good job of making red more interesting, I mean it's my least favorite color in Magic and right now I don't see a more fun deck to play.

posted a message on For You, When Was the 'Golden Age' of Magic?
I started playing when Prophecy was in stores but my best friend who I played the game with had a lot of Urza's and older cards in his decks so I was always on the look out for those sets. For me the Urza block would be the golden age even though I didn't play the game then, it remains my favorite set for all the powerful cards and great memories playing with them.

I also continue to look at everything since 8th edition as "new" magic and don't really enjoy the cards as much (but I do enjoy some sets like Time Spiral and Theros).

Except we aren't in a wilderness, we are in a civilized society and a wealth one at that. We can afford to make sure that people can be taken care of so why the hell should we tolerate pain and suffering that doesn't need to happen?

I wouldn't call being trillions in debt wealthy. The fact we have a government that tries to print its way out of debt is silly, and letting that same government run healthcare is a mistake.

And maybe time after I get to know the rules better and get more cards,I will try a tournament, but I saw a format that was curious for me, each guy had 3 packs, and opened them, took a card and passed the rest untill all the 3 packs were finished, and then played. Is that an official format?

That is a format called drafting. It's one of two Limited formats, the other being called sealed. It's a fun format but can be skill intensive as it requires you to be able to assess the best cards from a pack and start crafting a strategy based on what you see. It means you don't always get to play the style of deck you feel comfortable with as the cards you end up with might not support it. It's a good way to learn cards in a particular set but it can be difficult. My best advice if you want to try drafting is to actually head to www.twitch.tv and watch some experienced players to get ideas of how to correctly assess cards.

Hello! I'm new to magic, and in my store they sell booster packs from a lot of expansions, and I was wondering which one is better? (Right now I only have an intro pack of dragon's maze, the store clerk recommend me to buy that one)

Currently they have the next boxes in store:
    -M14
    -Dragon's Maze
    -Gatecrash
    -Return to Ravnica
    -M13
    -Avacyn Restored
    -Dark Ascension
    -Innistrad
    -Lorwyn
    -Morningtide
    -Modern Masters

The last three cost more than the other ones,is it because there are better cards in them? Or why do that packs cost more? Also for a new player, which one is recommended? They also told me about Theros coming out soon, and that I could ask for any pack from any set and they could get it for me.

Lorwyn and Morningtide are from 2007-2008 so they are older and less common to see in stores which is why the cost more. They have some nice cards in that set but before you buy any boosters you need to decide how you want to play Magic. Are you looking at playing in tournament (big or small)? If so then you need to pick a format like Standard, Modern, or Legacy. If you're just looking to pick up cards and play casually then you can buy any boosters you want.

Modern Masters is more expensive because it's a full reprint set with a lot of powerful cards in it for the Modern format, so it's good value for getting into that format as well as just getting some nice cards for casual play. There's also a foil in every pack which is nice. Notable cards in the set include the very expensive Tarmogoyf and Dark Confidant.

Innistrad, Dark Ascension, and Avacyn Restored have some decent cards but are about to rotate out of Standard, so if you want to play that format it's wise to just pass on these sets. There's some cool cards that are good in older formats like Liliana of the Veil and Snapcaster Mage from Innistrad, so I would recommend that set out of the three, but all of them have some strong cards to get. If you like angels then Avacyn Restored might be to your liking; it also has a few good demons in there if you like those.

Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, and Dragon's Maze are the current best choice to buy if you're looking to get into Standard. They also have the very good shocklands which are important for Standard, Modern, and even casual play. Return to Ravnica has the best value out of the three in my opinion, but it only has half of the guilds represented so keep that in mind (you won't find Godless Shrines in RTR but you will in Gatecrash). Dragon's Maze has a small chance of having any of the shocklands in a booster pack but it's not that common.

The M13 and M14 sets are your coresets and generally they include one or two good cards and a lot of mediocre cards designed more for limited than constructed. With M13 rotating out soon you may want to just buy M14 packs for Standard, but I would recommend staying away from both and just buying singles of any cards you want from these sets as it will save you money.

Again before you buy any boosters first decide how you want to play Magic because it's different for each person.

posted a message on [[FTV]] From the Vault: Twenty
    Quote from Ertai"s Lament
Quick question for everyone. What would you consider to be a fair entry fee for a Standard tournament whose sole payout was a pick from an opened FTV: 20? In other words, winner gets a Jace (obv), then runner-up gets second pick, etc?

A $15 entry for a win-a-box Standard seems fairly, well... standard... and Jace alone has a higher value than a generic box of M14 by present market price. We're mulling over more ways to get these into the hands of our players in addition to the ones I mentioned some pages ago.

    Thanks in advance!

That sounds like a fantastic idea to me.
