Yeah I've been tentatively watching that one progress. EverQuest is probably the best game that I ever played and seeing Brad going back to his roots with a game that is "a little bit of Vanguard, a little bit now and lots of EQ1" is exactly what I want to play. The games more companies push out into the genre these days are instant gratification McWorld's that do little to hold the player's interest beyond a couple of weeks or months.

I'm currently in on this kickstarter at $250 and will probably go to a higher tier after I get my w2s and can see what my taxes will look like. I'm hoping we can get this campaign all of the way to $800,000 and beyond.

If your deck is packing Spreading Seas, it seems likely that the Islandwalk ability wont be going to waste. Even if you can't take advantage of the Islandwalk ability; an untargetable 7/11 is still quite relevant.

Why is that? Can't you switch the target of Cruel from yourself to your opponent?

Swerve doesn't change the controller of the spell only targets and the only legal target is an opponent of that controller. You may choose to play a Swerve on [Cruel Ultimatum[/card] but you can only change the target to yourself. If you want to give your opponent a taste of his own medicine use Twincast though I think you're best just playing Negate.

but this stuff are tournament legal?

They are in Legacy and Vintage but they wont be in Standard etc. That said I'm still a bit skeptical that this isn't some sort of a hoax.

edit: why he heck is land tax still banned.

The DCI has no ****ing clue about Legacy, that's why. In his one paragraph explanation Tom LaPille said that the cards chosen for unbanning was based on their performance in Online Classic; a format nothing like Legacy.

I actually emailed Tom about Land Tax, I don't expect a reply but if everyone emails him about it, maybe they will get the message that unbanning Land Tax is long overdue.

There is a lot of tough competition with cards like Tarmogoyf and Force of Will but ultimately I put my vote down for the Fetch lands. Fetch lands are the core of the mana base of just about every deck in the format and the mana base is most certainly the core of every deck. Without fetch lands decks would have a harder time splashing extra colors changing the viability of certain decks drastically. In addition to that other power house cards such as Sensei's Divining Top, Brainstorm and even Knight of the Reliquary are only power houses because of fetch lands.

After the fetchlands I would have to rate Force of Will as number two. Without Force of will the format would probably be more favorable for combo decks as it wont be there to disrupt them; on the other hand combo decks would no longer be able to play Force of Will as combo protection; though most combo decks don't currently play it anyway. It is possible that the more control oriented decks could make use of some of the alternatives such as Disrupting Shoal but notwithstanding the balance of power would chance towards combo decks.

I actually rate Tarmogoyf pretty low; while he is the creature, the format would move along just fine without him replacing him with the next best creature.

The only thing these will do for Legacy is add more singleton/two of lands into decks to help stagger the fetchland counts to reduce the effectiveness of Pithing Needle, Extirpate, etc. The only one that's likely to see heavy play as a 4 of in the format is the g/u one; the rest are mostly irrelevant.

WHY?!?!?!?!?!?! They were just about to rotate from Extended... Facepalm

I know. I was actually kind of looking forward to playing in an Extended format that didn't require me to shuffle my deck a dozen times during the match.

Due to the popularity/dominance of u/g decks in Legacy; the u/g fetchland will inevitably be worth significantly more than the other ones just as Tropical Island is the most valuable of the enemy colored dual-lands.

I voted no because the "improved" names for the 5 cards is question are actually worse than the names they had originally. Essence Scatter, Runeclaw Bear? Yuck.

Doing a google search for "chapin's profane bluff turned up a thread where Pat Chapin described what happened in that game.

I would have liked to talk about this story in my article, but basically it is along these lines-

I have Chameleon Colossus, Cloudthresher, and two Wilt-Leaf Liege, as well as 8 land. My only card is Thoughtseize. I have 10 life.

My opponent has been playing off the top and has a Siege Gang, 4 Goblin tokens, an Elspeth, an Elspeth token, two Stillmoon Cavaliers, 2 untapped mana, and 17 life.

    What is the play?

I drew the Profane Command and immediately showed it to him very happily, hoping to draw the concession. He does nothing.

I say, It is a Profane Command. You are at 17, right?

He says yes, but what are you going to do with it?

So, I think and have to decide in a split second whether to kill Siege Gang and be likely doomed in time or try a bid at the win somehow.

I tap all 8 land and say,

"Profane Command, you lose 6 life and all of my legal targets gain fear."

Then I think he asks me something to the effect of, do you attack with everything?

Then I turn all of my creatures sideways and attack with the team.

He does not block with anything but the two stillmoons, and is dead as a result. I immediately tell him afterwards, both for his personal use in future situations and to avoid any confusion with random people watching the feature match pointing out that he could have blocked afterwards.

I believe that in every aspect that turn was legal and I took great care to in NO way indicate that Colossus had fear, as I did not point to it, I did not say all of my guys have fear, I did not say the team gets fear, etc. Also, he did not ask me any questions regarding any of my creatures after I played the Profane Command, beyond "So this is a 6/6? and this is a 9/9?"

Obviously his opponent failed to ask the right questions and I don't think what he did was that bad but like I said earlier; victories like that aren't usually the most fun.

I want to point that that just because you can do something doesn't mean you should. As many have pointed out that while none of these techniques are against the rules they can be considered unsportsman like conduct.

The article referenced Kenji Tsumara and how he has a history for actually reminding his opponents to pay their upkeep costs on their pacts; another such player is Julien Nujiten who actually lost a match in a pro tour top 8 for being a good sport and letting his opponent pay his upkeep cost for his Krovikan Whispers late. While good sportmanship may have lost them matches and money they did gain large amounts of respect from the magic community at large which may in fact be the better prize.

History looks far more favorable on players who value integrity over winning and when it becomes Tsumara's or Nujiten's turn for consideration for the pro tour hall of fame their reputation will serve them well. In contrast other players such as Mark Justice and Michael Long who were both some of the best players the game has ever known; missed their opportunity for the hall of fame due to their lack of integrity and unsportsman like conduct.

Above all though a player is more likely to value their own accomplishments more if their earned them without stooping to such tactics to "gain an advantage". Winning on a technically because your opponent didn't realize that Chameleon Colossus didn't had protection from black isn't going to feel as sweet as it would otherwise.

And fishes, don't forget the fishes!:D

Anyway many people pointed out this before, that is why you will often find lists with only fishes and broodmates.

Exactly, I long ago replaced my walls with more removal. Removal spells play the same roll as walls without being vulnerable to your opponent's removal spells; it's a win/win.

No. He has it right. 3 damage to a creature for red mana makes people think twice about playing x/3 creatures, and would be too powerful. 3 to a player for red mana is Lava Spike and that was never considered overpowered. There is no equivilent for creature damage as far as I know (a card that costs red mana that does 3 to a creature, besides Lightning Bolt.

@Grakk: That card would be perfect. Excellent call.

The other two cards are Chain Lightning and Rift Bolt. Both cards can do 3 damage to a creature for 1 red mana however neither do that damage instantly like Lightning Bolt.

How is the Fog match for us? If it is problematic, Telmin Performace might do the trick.

It's about 50/50, the problem though is that the TurboFog deck tends to grind the game to a halt so it's very hard to finish a match in 50 minutes. Winning game one is of absolute necessity if you want to win the match as you wont have enough time to come back and win games 2 and 3.

I totally owned the BR aggro decks at the PTQ I played in on the 23rd thanks in large part to the 3 Runed Halos and the 4 Intimidation Bolts I had in the main deck.

Story Circle is okay but it requires that you keep mana open so I don't play it. Also the board sweepers you're playing aren't much help against the deck either as they rely on fast damage through things like Hellspark Elemental to kill you before you stabilize.
