Dredge would like a word with you. Dredge is a powerful legacy deck, so lets look at the prices of it.

Your numbers would like a word with you. The Middle Price, which is way more realistic stands at half the value amounts you quoted. It can be further reduced by at least 50% or more by trading.

Additionally, you are comparing the cheapest Legacy decks with the most expensive Standard decks. The popularity of Dredge, in particular, has taken a big hit since the deck dies to Rest In Peace.

Standard is great if you like the rotating card pool and do not mind the ongoing investment (also in theory Standard could lead to modern play as your collection expands over the years).

Not to mention that when your cards rotate out you don't burn them. You can use them in eternal formats and EDH. The last couple of blocks provided a lot of Modern staples, for example. So a portion of this periodical investments goes to your future Modern, Legacy, EDH, etc. decks.

And in terms of price, 400 a year over 5 years is the same as a stable $2000 deck isn't it?

Not really. When you live from paychecks it's one thing to shell a 100-200$ every 4-6 months, another to save 2000$ and dump them on the table at one time.

As for standard, right now there are tons of viable decks you can play and even more you can innovate in.

What I'm wondering in a big vintage tournament Like the VIntage World Champs for instance is the judges there going to be able to check your cards out and give you the go ahead prior to the event?

No matter the size or format of the tournament, you can always ask the judge to inspect your cards for any reason. The vast majority will be happy to do so.

Thanks for the insight! I'm asking because I plan to play vintage soon, and I'm scared of buying fake Powers....

Once again, if you are planning on buying Power, I would suggest you do so in person or from a reputable and well-known business. Don't do it on eBay. If an individual sells it online and you want the card, hop on the car, get a friend that is knowledgeable and meet the seller so you can inspect the card in person before giving the cash. A honest seller would not mind allowing you to inspect his card.

On the flipside: You just bought a power 9 the week before a tournament and halfway through, someone calls the judge on you and you realize your purchase was fake. How would you feel?

I have some difficulties believing that your opponent, 1) during a tournament, 2) in a sleeve, and 3) with other stuff he has to worry about (like the game) would be better able to recognize a fake card than somebody who is buying a card worth a car and, I assume, inspected it very carefully before handing over the cash. If you make these kind of big trades, ALWAYS bring somebody knowledgeable who can help you inspect that card.

  • posted a message on What's the shortest/longest game you've ever played?
Shortest: My good ole Tempered Steel. My opponent plays land, go. I draw a card, and play: Plains, Memnite, Memnite, Vault Skirge, Mox Opal, Glint Hawk bouncing the Opal, replay the Opal, Glint Hawk number 2 bouncing the opal, replay the opal. He looks at his hand and scoops.

Longest Standard: A week ago with my BUG Superfirends deck against Esper. We went to turns on game one. The game was going back and forth. My Memory Adepts couldn't stick, his Elspeths got stoned. I almost milled him the hard way - by making him draw one card at a time from his library. Almost. On the last turn he had 1 card in the library, I had 3. The game ended in a draw.

Also, Llanowar is a place on Dominaria and M14 isn't set on Dominaria so the name wouldn't make sense.

Core sets don't have a location.
Darksteel Forge, as a random example, refers to Elesh Norn and the praetor is only found on one particular plane.

Karakas deals with Emrakul, Mangara deals with Emrakul and anything problematic too and Flickerwisp allow him to reuse the ETB of things like Stoneforge Mystyc, Revoker, etc.

    Quote from Ucross
No one is suggesting both. We are suggesting to help remove mana screw/flood we are NOT suggesting that everybody have easy access to the resources they need.

But the mana flood/screw are, often, a result of resource mismanagement in one or more of these aspects:
    • not having the correct amount or ratio of lands and/or colors
    • mulliganing improperly
    • not having ways to use extra mana
    • not having enough card draw to get your land drops
    • too heavy or too light curve

Certainly, luck plays an important part. However, more often than not the issue can be located within the deck. It is more useful to learn from your mistakes and correct them rather than changing the game so that your mistakes are excused.

As a side note, building the mana base of a deck is my favorite part of deck building. Spending a lot of time on whether the 26th land should be a swamp or an island can have an eye-opening effect on how the deck functions.

Well, if the mana screw/flood was not part of the game and everybody had an easy access to the resources they need, why would we even have the mana system? What will be the purpose of resource management (having the correct amount of lands and colors, mulliganing properly, having ways to use extra mana or to draw cards to get your land drops, etc.) if resources are readily available and there is no penalty for errors?

There's plenty of ramp. Darksteel ingot, elvish mystic, sylvan caryatid, voyaging satyr, nykthos, elvish mystic...Green has enough ramp right now in fact green's ramp right now is very powerful.

I agree. I even use Sylvan Caryatid as a ramp and an insane early blocker in my BUGw Superfirends. Allowing me to drop planeswalkers a turn earlier and saving me some life against aggressive decks makes a big difference.

  • posted a message on Please stop shuffling opponent's deck if you don't know how
I find no reason to shuffle my opponents' decks provided I see they shuffle it properly, which almost everybody does. The only time I shuffle is I suspect somebody is doing something shady. I've done that only a couple of times. I see no reason to shuffle my opponents' decks for something like FNM.

    Gentlemen and Ladies,
Thoughts on Eye of Singularity as a replacement for Leyline of Singularity? All those Sol Rings, all those Gaea's Cradles instantly explode now.

What I don't like in this card is the potential to screw us on lands. We run a lot of non-basics and there is a really good chance that somebody else might have the same land on the field.

Mystic Barrier is the only of the new enchantment that can fit into this deck IMHO. It restrict the attacks t us from only a single player rather than the whole table.

  • posted a message on To Pull a Planeswalker
My first planeswalker was during a sealed in M12, shortly after I started going to the LGS for the first time. I knew how to play the game for only 3 months or so. I opened the pack and I saw Primordial Hydra and Overrun. I was excited and showed it to my buddy. Then I felt there was another card behind the hydra and... a foil Jace, Memory Adept!

This was right after the craze around Mind Sculptor and everybody was expecting a remarkable Jaces, so the shop owner offered me $50 for it, which I was happy to accept.

Since then I have pulled 3 Relentless, 1 Domri, 1 Xenagos, 1 Architect of Thought and 1 Tamiyo.

Do the Gods infringe on the no creature rule?

The rule was, actually, enchantments only. If you feel Erebos fits in the deck, go ahead.
