My favourite card has to be Hymn to Tourach. It really throws a wrench into your opponent's game but can do so in a fun way. Seeing what they lose and how it affects the game is a blast and they're usually not even mad about it because we're having a good time. After it goes off it's time to adapt.
Then there's the art. You can have the awful sweater party worthy wolf version or the creepy "instruments made from their victims' bones" version. Ritual version or the one where they're all worshiping the inanimate carbon rod.
IT'S JUST SO VERSATILE
That's what I mean. It just doesn't seem to work if you're playing people who are willing to change up their strategies/decks. I know, I've tried. I'd love it if my Uril deck was all about speed and gave little to no regard to what the other guy was doing. As of now it's filled with cards like Silence, Autumn's Veil, Tajuru Preserver, Vexing Shusher, Umbra Mystic, etc. to deal with the myriad ways people have come up with to stop him.
I always struggle with lists like this. How do they deal with heavy control decks with so few cards that deal with counters (Grand aBolisher and Cavern of Souls)? What about constant boardwipes (umbras)? Seems like there are too few ways to deal with things like this. I realize the deck is meant to be fast but a well prepared opponent would probably be able to give you a really hard time.
Makes sense, appreciate the help. I did get that feeling of not being totally happy when I would draw the demon or muse because of the casting cost. Out they go.
What do you prefer in terms of card draw in 1v1 Commander? Cards that allow you to draw a few more cards or slow, steady earners like Bloodgift Demon or Graveborn Muse? Having that dilemma right now with my Olivia Control deck. The aforementioned cards might be of better use in my Oloro deck.
Also, how necessary are boardwipes? I run very few but they're around. Not sure if I should just stick to spot removal. Again, talking about Olivia here. Uril doesn't draw much and doesn't particularly care what you're playing since he's always the biggest gorilla in the forest.
How do you guys like the draw in these Olivia decks? Big draws at once or slower but consistent draw power? I'm trying to decide between Greed/Erebos, God of the Dead (never enough devotion for my to be a creature in this deck) versus Ancient Craving/Ambition's Cost.
A little too easy.
Eight looks like it could be fun but only for a while. I imagine that a little too much time with mono white will get boring and the novelty of doing nothing but protecting your creatures will wear off quickly.
Momir and Nath are going to draw hate but will likely be the most fun to play. Nath gets my vote because I'm currently really enjoying making my opponents discard and sac creatures. These two really are the only options on that list that will make for decently versatile commanders.
Someone said Olivia Voldaren earlier and I have to agree. She's not my post powerful deck but certainly the most fun. You can use her first ability to pump her and attack for general damage. If you don't feel like it, you can use her second ability to steal enemy creatures and use them. Drive people nuts by sacrificing all their stuff to a Viscera Seer in response to their spot removal. Then again, I prefer to steal things forever with Conjurer's Closet. Or, if you've decided to go Vamp tribal but found much better non-Vamp cards, go ahead and make them Vampires and throw down a Rakish Heir.
Lately I've been playing a lot of 1v1 EDH and there hasn't been nearly as much need so it's been lowered to 5. There have been a lot of creatures so I'm up to 15 spot removal in my Olivia control deck, along with several Duress effects. Very few in my Uril deck since I really don't need to worry too much about the other guy's board as the game's over rather quickly. All depends on your meta I suppose.
If you've decided to play cutthroat, competitive style EDH (and everyone at the table is cool with it), then enjoy your extra turns. Most people would rather, you know... play the game instead of just watch you play with yourself.
Looking at some of the deck prices in this thread... Goddamn.
I'd have to go with Into the Maw of Hell. Every time I see this card I want to put it in one of my decks, even though it has no place in any of them.
