The new card frame comes off as confusing to me at first glance. Specifically, the Wall of Fire looks like a Rakdos hybrid card and not a mono-red card. I'm sure this confusion will fade with time but nonetheless, I think it is a valid criticism of the new card frame.
Someone is claiming that this is not Jason Chan's signature because the J is closed. I'm not a hand writing expert, but it looks legit to me. Thoughts?
You've pointed out many of the problems with singleton in a powerful format but rules are rules. : P
Aether Vial was one of the cards that I was most iffy about, and yeah, Knight of the Reliquary probably is not the best with only 4 playable fetches. I can justify picking up a Voice of Resurgence as it is sorta playable in EDH and not a reprint trap like Thoughtseize is at the moment.
Castigate is a "nice" option. I'll move Despise to the first sideboard slot.
I have no idea what Sword(s) are best these days. War and Peace seems nice due to pro-White, being able to hit Planeswakers and players at the same time, and being a very fast clock.
Speaking of the sideboard, here is some stuff I've considered.
I exclusively play EDH but with Gencon coming up, I wanted to brew up a Modern deck to play in a side event. While I have a nice collection of cards, I typically only have one of them. Thus, the idea of a highlander Modern deck was born.
I don't know much about the metagame other than Pod and Jund are decent, Scapeshift is a thing, so is Twin Combo and Tron. Here is what I've brewed up, sans sideboard. All suggestions welcome. If I can win a single match in say 4-5 rounds of swiss, the tournament will be a success. Oh, and I do not own nor have access to Thoughtseize.
Looks like slim pickings in terms of Magic artists but Wayne Reynolds and Mark Poole have done a good amount of EDH cards (the only format I play). Looking forward to meeting artists, getting cards signed, and jamming limited events, EDH, and other gaming for 4 days.
This year's Gencon will be my first and I am looking forward to having some Magic cards signed.
Does anyone have information about Magic artists that are penciled in for this year's Gencon, that will be signing cards? Looking to get a head start on picking up some foils etc... I've perused the Gencon website and community forums but have not seen any information. An email to the Gencon contact resulted in a "You'll have to talk to WOTC about that".
Here is a rough draft of a Varolz deck. It is probably a bit light on answers but the general idea is to run some ways to protect him against exile effects, play creatures you don't mind sacrificing, and play good BG creatures that scavenge well.
Thanks for the reply Pete. I figured that was the case. This thread has given me a bit more peace of mind.
Part of the reason I'm a bit paranoid is because I put my (now old) address as the return address just in case there was a shortage on return postage, so I would pay for it, not the artist. After talking with the USPS, I learned that any notice of postage shortage does not get mail-forwarded. It goes only to the listed address, the place I no longer live at. So if my return postage was short for some reason, I might never find out about it, and the package will then go to one of the USPS unclaimed sites. I did not know I was going to be moving as of January 2013, when I sent the cards. My old apartment fell apart on me and I had to move in a week.
I emailed him at the email address listed at his website, but haven't received a reply in 2-3 weeks.
I know that the USPS delivered the initial insured package to Rob's Oakland, CA address around 1/31/2013. I have called my old post office and informed them of the various issues here. They said they would look out for the package. They also said they would check any lost and found type places that the USPS has.
Thanks for the replies. All I can do is keep waiting and hoping.
I had sent some cards to Rob in 2012 to get signed, and received them back within a month or so. They turned out great so after a couple of months I sent him some of my more expensive cards that he had done (Ravnica shocks, a couple of foils; ~$200 of stuff). I sent with delivery confirmation so I know they got there, but despite sending him an email a few weeks ago, I haven't heard anything back. I have since moved and am a bit worried that I will never see those cards again what with mail forwarding mishaps etc . . . .
I just wanted to see if anyone else has sent cards to him recently and what their experience was. I realize there is inherent risk in sending cards to artists and that these things take time. I figured it was worth a shot to see if anyone else is in a similar situation.
Separate question: I did include a tip of roughly $30 on 20-25 cards. Generally speaking, is that reasonable?
I've been using the card in almost every white deck I play because it is a cheap way to get out in front of removal on one's commander. For example, in my Mangara of Corondor deck, playing Angelic Renewal on Turn 2 makes it much more likely that a turn 3 Mangara is going to live to see Turn 4.
The worst part about the card? No foil exists. Get on that Wizards.

I've settled on Junk mid-range because it lets me play a lot of sweet cards that are not very good in EDH, such as Dark Confidant, Tarmogoyf, Liliana of the Veil, Deathrite Shaman, etc . . . .
