So, first time here on this thread. 8-rack, along with merfolk, is one of the few modern decks I enjoy playing.
I'm curious: do you guys think the planeswalker change will benefit us? I modified tom ross' list by cutting two funeral charms and adding two liliana, the last hope (I also changed the sideboard because I was feeling the lack of ensnaring bridges). What do you guys think? Second liliana might be good?
I definitely think another grind source is needed as the games where the opponent got over 4 lands became a real slog for Tom (his loss against Jeskai Control in Top 4 was painful to watch). I think Liliana, the Last Hope is at least worth testing (I am not sure what I would drop for her). Her -2 would also support running some creatures in our SB (Asylum Visitor and Pack Rat jump to mind). which would give us some better grind and if we can get her Emblem... Game Over.
bitterblosom obb nixilis empty the pyts dark confidant ... Jejeje
Ob Nixilis and Empty the Pits both seem extremely expensive for a deck running Smallpox. I could see Dark Confidant and Bitterblossoms, but the latter needs a LOT of build-up and it is killing us while doing so, I think it is better in something more Aggro where you want lots of bodies. What we need is something cheap that also doesn't kill us.

Tom Ross, also on Day 2 stream: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/175466969, trying to skim through to find his matches: ~2:11 (boo, it is only a partial match ), ~3:31 (full match against 5-color Death's Shadow, awesome play in the last match from a SB card ), ~6:14 match is first of Top 8 (Tom's match won the home "vote to watch", ofc), Tom's last match shown ~7:00 .
The cast did mention that Tom Ross is still working on the SB, which kinda seems like the case with all the 4s and 1s.
Most of these complaints are from kids who can type from the safety from behind their monitors. Pay no mind to these worthless unconstructive posts, this set is awesome. The end.
Oh please. We literally just got the list, and no one has played it yet. It's too early to call it good OR bad with any degree of certainty. Calling it trash and calling it amazing are both equally unconstructive.
As far as commander potential, I think the set looks a bit disappointing, at least at first glance. None of the new commanders I think have any real legs. The mono-colored commanders are just too weak, brass and gizarth require bad creature types at high density, leaving Vona and Tishana. Tishana will certainly see play but personally as a non-fan of zegana, she looks like more of (roughly) the same for UG. Vona would have been interesting, except for the timing restriction that absolutely wrecks him, at least so far as I'm concerned. Generally having a permanent-based solution is a bit risky anyway, since any savvy opponent will kill him before trying to do any shenanigans, but with the timing restriction to boot you can't even punish them in retaliation before he dies.
There are other cards with potential for commander in the 99, but as someone who already owns a cradle, diamond valley, and maze of ith, the flip cards are less exciting than they'd otherwise be for me. search for azcanta might actually be my favorite card from the set.
This.^ I don't think opening your wallet for every product WotC puts out helps the game nor do I think constantly moaning about it and still shelling out for it. Leave a single comment of complaint then don't buy from that set. Or temper your buying and buy some singles, but don't buy boxes. Kaladesh decks will still be around and very viable so build one of those decks if you want to keep playing the game; while waiting to see where this set goes. In business, money speaks louder than words; once WotC sees the low money then they will go and look at the words to see where players are having problems.
Bishop’s Soldier - decent Lifelink filler for Vamps Demystify - Legendary Flip Enchantment hate reprint! Encampment Keeper - 8 mana and you have to sac him for a mediocre combat trick!? At least as a 1/1 First Strike he is okay for limited. Glorifier of Dusk - Vampire version of that "reprinted to death angel", but costs life... Strictly Worse? Queen’s Commission - mono version of the WB version that is cheaper, but makes one less token, not bad. Raptor Companion - Raptor dance? Or smell my foot? Sheltering Light - SB for standard? Slash of Talons - I guess they had to give red Shock because White got this. Sunrise Seeker - behold the ONLY White Explore card in the set. Territorial Hammerskull - possible for a RW aggro dino deck in standard?
Air Elemental - REPRINT!!!!!!!! Cancel - REPRINT!!!!!!!! Depths of Desire - if only it cost one less mana... still might make it in standard Revel to Riches deck? Dive Down - nice quick save! Navigator’s Ruin - Mill back-up plan for aggro? Seems bad. Pirate’s Prize - more filler for Revel to Riches deck. Prosperous Pirates - Revel in Riches deck, just keep stalling with cards to also leave you Treasure tokens Sailor of Means - man with this many Treasure makers at common even limited might have to watch out for Revel in Riches decks Shore Keeper - one drop 8 mana Sac ability cycle at common? I like it a lot better than the White creature. Tempest Caller - as if all the can't be blocked and flying merfolk weren't enough, here is the "screw it, take all the combat damage to the face" card
Blight Keeper - another of the one drop cycle , maybe better than the White creature? Contract Killing - could see this in Revel in Riches limited deck, but too meh for standard. Costly Plunder - wow another awesome draw spell, maybe even in Modern black decks? Grim Captain’s Call - :confused2:....because the Tribes share so much in common? Heartless Pillage - maybe can get there, still loving all the ways they are trying to hand us Treasure tokens March of the Drowned - kinda iwsh they saved this card name for a more pushed spell, but good in limited Pirates Skittering Heartstopper - wow, limited all star?
Dual Shot - more good burn spells! Fiery Cannonade - whoa, go-go Red Pirates! Fire Shrine Keeper - okay now the White one drop in this cycle is looking better Rummaging Goblin - would haste have really been that busted on a 1/1 for 3 mana? EDIT:NVM is a reprint
Ixalli’s Keeper - last of the one drop cycle... wait a minute that costs two mana! Why you no cycle right WotC? The 8 mana effect is at least okay in limited. New Horizons - not a bad ramp effect Elaborate Firecannon - awful, just awful
Not much to say on green or red as we got most of those cards spoiled. Nothing really leaped out or was new in the multi-colored or artifacts. Art wise the Island Basics look the best out of all of them, the rest look too generic or just forced. The Mountain with the Forested cliffs over a river looks pretty good, though.
Explore seems like a tacked on mechanic for limited, not pushed at all and not much support. Treasure tokens have a fair amount of useful cards look out for weird UB stall decks in limited that suddenly slap down Revel in Riches for the win. Red got a LOT of burn might even be enough for a creature less burn deck in limited (yeah I am just as thrilled as the rest of you ).
That's a whole lot of meh for such a long ability. In the days of gnarled mass being playable (I mean besides that ironic stint), maybe. But power has creeped so much that green getting a 3-drop that jumps through hoops just to be a 4/3 on a 3-drop or have some lifegain? Seems really sad, eating an opponents bin doesn't really justify it. Greens been getting 3-drops that poop card advantage/recur like deathmist raptor, mouth-to-feed, inexorable blob, pride sovereign, Ramunap Excavator, etc etc. If all this did was eat a an instant so it could be a Prowling Serpopard against a non-blue deck, well even then it still blocks as a 3/2. If its trying to swing into someone to make you life, its probably going to die without even trading when all you've got is 3 power on turn 4+
I think development ate this card
This card is pure value. It hoses red decks, graveyard decks, and any control deck that relies on Torrential Gearhulk/Snapcaster Mage and their gy. This thing is going to be good.
That it does it one card at a time and both Snappy and Gearhulk have Flash, while you attacking is only Sorcery speed means this does not hose anything. It can be a nuisance to hit the best card in the yard, but unless this had Flash (which could have aty least been a thing), it doesn't defeat instant speed yard shenanigans.
Is it really? You just switch this and someone's land to a basic, but then you ramp rest of the table. Isn't that bad?
Diplomacy, gain a free turn of immunity from the players 3 and 4 as you let them gain a land and blow up player 2's Maze of Ith leaving that player wide open.
Whoa, Ghost Quarter that also gets you a land? Sweet. And neither your nor the opponent's land ETB tapped? I think Hate Bears or whatever that BW Hate deck is called (so many variants and names) got a new toy.
I really wish it was at the beginning of each opponent's upkeep you gain the Treasure token. Then it would feel more like they are attacking you because you are gaining something on their turn, plus it would be better in multiplayer, while not being too pushed in 1v1. As is gaining 1 Treasure token and forcing 3 other players to attack me is not good. In 1v1, I feel like they will most likely want to attack me anyway. I think this card was very close, but needed some re-wording to make it playable.
Definitely would like to see this be a cycle, but I'm not sure what tribes the red, black, and white cards would get. Vampires seems likely for white more so than black (since they're putting an emphasis on a lot of mono white or BW Vampires).
This can't be a traditional cycle as there are only 4 tribes, no? If the Green one is 'dino munch' and the Blue one is this Pirate countermagic... then Merfolk has already been locked out (their two colors are already used), and Red doesn't have a Tribe to have an effect.
If they had wanted this to be a (tribal) cycle, then this card should have been Merfolk and not Pirates... but it might have been too powerful (in Modern?) if so. But granting that, either the Vampire one is Black which forces Pirate to Red (leaving White out), or the Vampire one is White, and the Pirate one is likely Black (leaving Red out).
Or one tribe will get two.... considering Pirates and Dinos are both three colors.
I have to agree Vampires seems very tame, while I can already see a Tempo and Midrange Pirate deck forming and Dinos are getting crazy pushed. Almost feels like Vamps were an afterthought, possibly Merfolk too.
Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker because he is the most beast mode of the planeswalkers. Just getting him out requires work, but in the end he pays dividends in the havoc he can reek.

The image isn't showing.... darn work block most likely. Even then which card you talking about?

Yep, like so many cards that never make it to standard, all they had to do was make the exile clause, "graveyard".
Or one tribe will get two.... considering Pirates and Dinos are both three colors.
Millions of people play this game, demand always outstrips supply.
