I wanted to ask the legacy players of this world here, whats the best counter spell i should put in the deck for a Food Chain deck?
As soon as that food chain comes out, if its not game over then, its usually about over in 1 turn. He food chains into Emrakul, or another big stupid Eldrazi... so... i need to know how to beat this stupid deck lol
Do we think faithless looting is a good card for this deck? not just because of the flashback, its just annoying when you are sitting with land in your hand instead of combo pieces... and i usually have extra red to play with more than blue sources. Posting deck soon
Are you talking about adding Food Chain to this Pyromancer's Ascension deck? Anyway the best counter spell in Legacy is Force of Will. You could try Mindbreak Trap because I am assuming he is casting multiple creature spells to ramp to Emrakul, then you can exile him for free.
As far as Faithless Looting goes, I currently am trying out Izzet Charm for looting, counter, and burn all in one.
Spell Pierce : I actually hate this card. It is a terrible top deck when you are trying to "go off". It doesn't cantrip. But some kind of stack defense is required.
I have been thinking about trying out this deck. What about Disrupt instead of Spell Pierce?
You can respond to the trigger of Standstill all it will do it cause another Standstill trigger. Which is good in this case, because the opponent's draw will be replaced.
I just started collecting a complete set of Beta cards. I decided to grab the power first then will work on getting all the "cheap" cards. Planning on getting the Black Lotus by Christmas. It is going to be a long time before I finish this collection.
@Macius, will you post your Retraced Image list? I am making a High Tide deck and cannot afford the Candles right now, it would be great to try out Retraced Image.
As soon as Modern was announced, I was one of those guys that bought a bunch of perceived Modern "staples" because I was excited about the format. However, after playing Modern, I realized I just like Legacy better (sorry Modern guys).
Just recently, I started to look up prices on my Modern staples and was pleasantly surprised to see how much they have gone up. Especially Vendilion Clique, Remand, Fulminator Mage, Tarmogoyf, and Thoughtseize. Of course the ZEN fetches but they are useful for Legacy.
I have a hard time deciding if I should hold on to these in case they go up, or if I should sell now. I am leaning towards selling the creatures because I have the belief that all creatures will loose value eventually when a better creature is printed (remember when Morphling was the best creature?). So what is your advice for me?
Hey guys and galls. I'm pretty new to MTG. I play with my friends alot but I want to start doing some tournaments. I put together a deck that I love but I don't think it will be very competitive in a tourney. Here a list:
Unfortunately, most of the dragons you listed are really not legacy playable. This list is not really ideal either. I just stayed away from classic Dragon Stompy cards like Chalice of the Void and Trinisphere in favor of direct damage spells. But the Moon effects can help disrupt the opponent while you get enough mana to start casting dragons.
Haha, it would appear some things on the list do go down in value. I had a couple of Demonic Hordes in my land destruction deck that are worth less than what I paid for them about 14 years ago.
Well, yes, creatures do go down in value. Because WotC has been printing bigger creatures at cheaper mana costs. What are the chances of WotC printing a land that will negate Gaea's Cradle?
I'm debating selling these to fund my standard decks, as that's the format I prefer. But I'm also considering keeping them and trying to make a legacy deck with them.
Gaea's Cradle is on the reserve list and will never be reprinted. Definitely keep your playset. It will only go up in value.
Equipoise helps with taking care of creatures and artifacts that I do not like, lands as well but normally I am ahead on land drops unless I Thwart. Energy Field not only stops hoards of creatures but also any direct damage. Energy Field + Rest in Peace = lock (for the most part, does not stop loss of life).
Because I have decided to add two separate combos in this deck, you are right, my Stasis combo is not as robust as a dedicated Stasis deck. But I believe the flexibility of having alternate ways to win is superior. That way your opponent cannot just counter your Stasis and your deck falls apart. Now my opponent has to watch out for not only Stasis but also Rest in Peace. In addition, running Enlightened Tutor makes it possible for me to consistently grab whichever combo piece I need at the time.
EDIT: Just in case you did not know, phasing in happens during the untap step. Equipoise has opposing creatures, artifacts, and lands phase out. If you have Stasis out, those permanents will never phase back in.

Yup, I simply cannot play without free countermagic or good cantrips. Modern has no free countermagic and all the good cantrips are banned =(
But thanks for your information! I will probably sell off the creatures at the least.

Keeping in mind your love for dragons, I would change your deck to be something like this:
4 Ancient Tomb
4 City of Traitors
16 Mountain
4 Grim Monolith
4 Simian Spirit Guide
2 Form of the Dragon
Dragons - 10
2 Fledgling Dragon
4 Moltensteel Dragon
4 Thundermaw Hellkite
4 Blood Moon
4 Magus of the Moon
Direct Damage - 8
4 Chain Lightning
4 Lightning Bolt

I believe that Baleful Strix is not Modern legal.

I am the type of player that likes to run 4 x cards (usually). I didn't think I needed 4 x Helm of Obedience so I split it with Ebony Owl Netsuke. Plus it is nice to have alternate win conditions in case someone lands a Pithing Needle on Helm of Obedience.
I have played Stasis decks before with Chain of Vapor, Vedalken Mastermind, and Chronatog and it is not fun for the opponent. So in my deck, I run two lock conditions.
1) Stasis is meant to combo with Ebony Owl Netsuke , Forsaken City, and Equipoise. (I wish Gush was legal)
2) Rest in Peace is meant to combo with Helm of Obedience and Energy Field.
