    1. Pandas are from China. Why are you mixing up Japan and China?

    2. The rough translation on this is scary panda. You need to brush up on your Japanese. :p

So yeah guys, I didn't know the finesse of the scoring system well and so I probably made a scoring mistake. Seeing as we've made traction into my scoring system, what about for Round 3 (which is similar to this round) you guys suggest a critique system that works well for everybody and lets everyone do their critiques? I'm not opposed to bringing back the old scoring system if everyone wants to do top 3s/crit 6 entries.

The important thing is that you learn from your mistakes. I'm sorry.

posted a message on [Card Creation League] January CCL - Signups!
Welcome everybody to the January CCL. Before we really get started here, I would like to type about what I would like to accomplish in this CCL.

Basically, I see lots of designs here on CCC&G where most of the ideas are innovative rares or mythics, or cards made to fit a specific type of challenge. While this helps CCC&G become a critiquing place for entire mechanics or cool, elegant rares, let me ask you a simple question. Why are you participating in CCC&G's activities?

For me, perhaps, I participate in CCC&G because I enjoy designing Magic cards and get involved in a community that also loves to design Magic cards. I know some of us, though, are more ambitious, and I would actually like to hone my card design skills well enough to compete in the Great Designer Search 3, whenever that rolls around. When the Great Designer Search 2 came, I was just a beginning Magic player at the time, but as years passed I began to grow an appreciation for the designers of the GDS2, and as a result whenever I have some free time I make it a habit to reread sections of the GDS2. I've probably read the whole thing by now 13 or 14 times, and each time I return to it I still pick up design tips. I credit the GDS2 for advancing my Magic Design, in fact. I'm an ardent believer that anyone who reads the GDS2 will become a better designer.

So, during November, Gerrard's Mom contacted me if I would like to host the November CCL. I responded "no" at the time because I did not have a CCL setup ready to go, but I promised that would host December. As he hosted the November CCL, I mused on what to do for the December CCL. Before, I was thinking of having some "choose your own guild" and make my CCL Ravnica-themed. I still think that would be a fine idea, but I've chosen to shelf it off for now. Then, Asrama said he would do the December CCL. I chose to gave him the spot because I was pretty busy at the time with finals. It looks to be a rousing success - he has a natural talent for flavor, and the prompts were interesting and fun.

One day I was thinking, "Are there any other GDS2 stuff I can get my eyes on?" and thus I stumbled upon the Salvation Support Thread. This made me raise my eyebrows a bit, since when you compare CCC&G from roughly two years ago to today, overall design quality has been higher. I attribute this to Club Flamingo's leadership of the subforum, where they coalesced the three contests and even added their own, as well as the Pro Tour, because the Pro Tour has been sort of a "one-stop point" for all of the good designers.

Let me go back to the Salvation Support Thread for a bit - a pretty good read, by the way, filled with some nuggets of advice. I especially liked Maro's tweets:

    Quote from Maro »
Don't worry about the story behind your world. Worry about how your mechanics evoke it.

    Quote from Maro »
For the #GDS2, I'm not interested in how flavor text explains your world; I'm interested in how rules text does it.

    Quote from Maro »
GDS2 Tip of the Day: Ask not just how your world is different from other Magic worlds but also how it's the same. You need anchor points.

    Quote from Maro »
Some misunderstand me. I'm not saying the world doesn't need flavor; I'm saying the flavor needs to be conveyed through the design.

In short: For this CCL, I would like to focus on holistic design. I'm not going to sugarcoat it with lots of cool flavor - I want the CCL to test a wide range of card design abilities. So, if you're interested, then please sign up. First round starts on January 1st.

As a design prompt, please pitch a set idea. Any set idea. You can add as much or as little flavor as you like. I just want some ideas on the table. I know this conflicts somewhat with the Pro Tour but the set has already been decided and this will give you a venue to release your set ideas onto the world. Also, I am going to ask you to design more cards that a normal CCL would - around two to five cards per round, I think. So please sign up if you think you can do it.
