I love them. I personally would like them better with a bit more space between the color and the Magic logo, but it's not a big deal.

I thought of that but i decided to keep them a little closer together in case if someone had to trim them to make them fit in a different application.

These are pretty bad ass..thanks for making. I plan to use them for spines on my 3-ring binders. They're just perfect.

I will say it would be cool if you redid the Creatures/Spells series to feature just creatures and just spells for each one. A bit more work..sure. Redface

Also, some pre-modern cards might be cool, but maybe they wouldn't fit well w/today's crisp arts. Rancor on the green mana one, for instance.

    You did this in Photoshop?

    Really nicely done man.

I did all of these in photoshop. I was going to have just creatures on one and just spells on the other but it was a time thing. It took me close to 5 or 6 hours to do these and I know what I am doing. If I had to cut out twice as many creatures..... that would have taken twice that long. I just needed something to put on my card boxes. I still have to make the thinner ones to go on the edge of the boxes. That is going to take a couple of hours to do if I reuse all of the artwork.

    Hey All,

I made some box art that you can print off tape on your monster boxes or standard long boxes so you know what color is inside the boxes..... LOL I got tired of writing on boxes.. Red, Green, Blue, ect... I wanted something cool. I made some years ago and everyone has always liked them. I decided to redo them. I have two different sets. I have a Basic set for the person with a smaller collection. You will need sheets 1-4. If you have a larger collection then you will need sheets 5-12.

    Basic Set

    Sheet 1

    Sheet 2

    Sheet 3

    Sheet 4

    Extended Set

    Sheet 5

    Sheet 6

    Sheet 7

    Sheet 8

    Sheet 9

    Sheet 10

    Sheet 11

    Sheet 12

The actual size of these are 10"x 3". Photobucket down graded the pics a little bit so when you print them you might need to set it to fit to page so it will be the right size. I would print these on photo paper, 110 lbs index paper. Plain paper is not thick enough and will warp like wet paper.

I will be making edge labels for monster boxes so you can see when they are stacked... as well as labels for the end of long boxes.

Let me know what you think.

I was at Gen Con today. I spent a good portion of the day having cards signed and altered. I had several that would not doodle on the cards, not even for money. I had several that wouldn't sign altered cards that were not done by them. Which now thinking about it I am glad they didn't. Unban brings up a good point. The cards altered by the artist should be worth more than anything else and if the artist start signing stuff altered by other people then what is to stop them from passing it off to other people as an artist alter. Let's face it there are tons of dishonest people out there looking to rip someone off especially if it just one little lie.... "Yeah it was altered by the artist" there really is no way to prove it wasn't....

Gen Con was super cool!! I got nearly 50 cards signed and 10 altered, most of them for free (I still tipped for alters). If you have the chance to meet Dan Scott he is really cool and he was doing tons of really cool alters for $10. I waited nearly 2 hours to have my Intet, the dreamer done. Now I have a Intet, the DEATHSTAR !! He put the death star and several tie fighters in it. Very cool!! All in all the artists were really nice and cool to talk to.

I can do store frontage but more of what I am doing is just something cool for someone at their house. No they are not perfect because they are hand done, that is why I am doing are art and not signs. I did a sign for my friends store to be nice.

I am building a CNC machine but I still need another $1k to finish it and get the software needed. Even then I would have to charge more because when you are doing these they are not direct transfers to plexi. You have to choose what lines to put in and what to leave out so it is not garbled. I am not looking to mass produce the same thing over and over. More like 1 off 2 off art pieces of magic pics.

CNC signs are very expensive to have made. Just to etch the sign I did on a CNC would be $150 - $200 that is if you had it in cad already. If they had to do the cad work to convert your work from a drawing to a CNC work path it is a couple of hundred more. That does not include the lighting, framing, wiring or anything else. I don't even want to know what they would charge for a detailed etching of blightsteel, chandra or jace..... shiver....

You can have a sign done laser etched. You can have a simple 12x12 text sign done single color, edge lit, for $150 but it will have no depth to it. Looks more like a back lit sign and will not be multiple colors.

Part of what doesn't come across in the pics is the depth of the sign. It looks much, much cooler in person.

I would actually love to get a quote from a cnc company to do the sign I did as well as something else much more detailed. Basically hand them a jpg of blightsteel and see what they would charge to do a detailed milling. I am curious now.

I am not wanting to do signs, there are ton of companies going Acrylic signs, I want to do art pieces that people can put on their wall or desk.

    Hey All,

I have been thinking about making more of the etched plexiglass signs to sell. Before I do that though I wanted to find out from you guys, if it would be something that you would want to buy. They look really cool and make a nice wall or desk piece. The other thing is what would be a fair price?

The Frame that i would make for this voting is an 11"x 14" and would you buy it and how much would pay to buy it? These are all hand etched and hand made.

This will give you more of an idea of how much detail can be etched.

When picking art to etch you want art with defined edges. Art with a lot of fading in it, can't really be etched. Typically the background (landscapes) will not be etched. Typically in the frames that I am using you can fit 2 thicker layers of plexi or 3 thinner layers. Thicker gives you more depth of field (ie: It looks cooler). With each new color is a new layer so keep that in mind.

Specifics of what I can do:

I can make them in a wide array of sizes. The only thing that really limits the size, is the size and depth of the shadow box that I can buy.

I can make them in multiple layers for added depth and different colors. I typically would do 1, 2 or 3 layers. Each layer would add cost and different colors would as well. These are made like the 3d magic cards (just with fewer layers). Each layer adds depth and complexity.

I can make them battery or plug - in. I can even add a circuit that will allow you to power the sign with nearly dead batteries. It is not as bright but if you put normal batteries it will run much much longer than with out the circuit.

I have been debating on what to etch for my first one. The ones I put in the poll are some of the ones I thought would etch well and a lot of people would want to buy. I am open for suggestions.

I really like them cause they have an outdated future look to them. The fact they are real neon and a glow that can't be duplicated with something new. They are very unique and rare enough you don't see them everywhere.

The nixie tubes work a lot like a regular incandescent bulb, Ya know the little wire inside a bulb that glows? A nixie tube has a bunch of these, one shaped like each number 0-9. The number that gets displayed depends on which filament has the power going to it and that filament glows so you see the number.

In the first picture you can also see that the 5 is just an upside down 2, which is a pretty common cost saving measure on nixie tubes.

The ones that don't have the upside down 2 but an actual 5 tend to cost a lot more and are much harder to find. Nixie's are already difficult and sometimes expensive to buy.

An LED of LED, of course.

Awesome project, but check your picture links - the "Left side" and "Right side" appear to be the same image.

Thanks I missed that, it is corrected but the pic is a little blurry.

I was trying to think of what might make a good sign to etch next. I was thinking of blightsteel colossus, but it needs to be something that everyone wants. Batterskull is another but I am not sure that one would etch well. Force of Will might be a good one but I don't know how well it would etch.

    Anyone got any ideas?

"Good god. This is quite possibly the coolest thing ever. It is truly magnificent. What does it run on?"

It runs on 2 AA for the led's and 2 C Batteries for the nixi tubes, so they will last a long time. The Nixie tubes run off of 170v but really low amperage.

This is the thing, can you explain, how the numbers change? From what I understand, the tubes turn so they let out light differently.

The nixie tubes have all of the numbers stacked on top each other. The tube has 12 pins out of the bottom. There is a ground pin and each other pin is a digit and there are also two decimals as well but I didn't hook them up. The knobs in the back rotate around and supply power to each digit one at a time. I was planning on making a short video so people could see how it works. If you want to see the tubes just google "Nixie Tube Clocks". That is where I got the idea from.

The nixie tubes are really cool but difficult to get. They were primarily used in the 70's. They haven't been made since the late 80's, so they are kinda rare. They didn't even make them here. When I get them I have to order them from Russia or the Ukrane and they take 3 weeks to get here. Nixies are like old magic cards. Some are kinda cheap and some are really expensive.

I am glad people like it.

I am also doing etched plexiglass lighted signs. I made one for a friend of mine who owns a card shop. It has two layers to the sign and two different colors. It looks really clean. I was planning on doing another one to sell. I think I am going to do blightsteel colossus, I think. I will have to take pics of the sign I did people can see it.

Hey Everyone, I thought I would share what I made. I had an idea to make a digital life counter. I wanted it to have a retro feel but kinda steampunkish. It took me a while to figure out how to build what I want and make it work the way I wanted without having to use digital board or a counting circuit. Basically you can rotate the knobs in the back and the neon tubes will display 0-9. I have a switch to turn all of the leds off and on. I have another switch that will turn the numbers to constant display or a pushbutton to show your life total so it conserves battery life. This thing took a long time to design, build, figure out how to wire, find the parts, etch the plexiglass, ect. I could do it again in half the time but who's counting. LOL

Here is the front pic of the window. You can see into the guts of it through the M in the center. I have over 25 ultrabright led's in this. I have two underlighting the neon tubes. The tubes run on 170v but I managed to run this whole thing on battery power. That was difficult to figure out how...

Here is the left side. I etched half of the face of some of the planeswalkers into the plexi. Jace and Chandra on this one.

    Here is the back side.

Full back side with the knobs and switches.

    Here is the right side.

    Close up of the tubes.

Close up of the M and leds.

Here is the top view of it. The plexiglas on top is a dark hunter green and I etched the mana symbols into it. Little hard to see with the camera.

    Here a corner view.

All in all it turned out pretty well. It took me about 30 hours to build. It is fairly big 4.25" inches square and 7.5" inches tall. So too big to use in a tournament but cool other wise.

Let me know what you think. I might sell it to fund my next project.

    Thanks
    Jason
