The End of an Era

So, I played this deck the first time in tournament yesterday. FNM at our LGS, 29 players showed up and we played 4 rounds (we always play only 4 rounds).
I played Emracool's list, except for 1 Melira in the side wich I switched for a Fracturing Gust. There are only 2 or 3 people playing Infect at our store and an Enchantment Prison Deck took 1st place last time and I wanted to have at least something against that in the side.

    Round 1 against BW Humans:
A homebrew it seems, he started game 1 with Bloodsoaked Champion into turn 2 Thalia. I started with a t1 suspended Search for Tomorrow and a tapped land on t2. He put Xathrid Necromancer, Cartel Aristocrat and Dark Confidant into play over the course of the next turns. I Scapeshift him on turn 5 and won.
Playing this deck for the first time I was a bit unsure how to sideboard and diceded on the D&T plan, so Dismember and Inferno Titan came in.
After a Mulligan I kept Inferno Titan, Dismember, Search for Tomorrow and lands. He played t1 Inquisition, took the Dismember and I just proceeded to draw lands and Scapeshift but no ramp. He put down his dudes and beat me to death. At least I saw he also had Zulaport Cutthroat in the deck, something to watchout for.
Game 3 I kept a good hand and played turn 4 Primeval Titan into turn 5 Scapeshift while he only had beaters.
    Win 1-0

    Round 2 against Blue Moon:
Game 1 he played turn 3 Blood Moon and counters multiple Primeval Titans.
I board in more threats and kept a hand with a turn 4 Scapeshift kill, but he played turn 3 Blood Moon. I played multiple Primeval Titans over the course of the game, wich he always could handle, with things like double bolt, or Electrolye + block with 2 Snaps. He seemed to have a lucky draw. I drew all my 4 Scapeshift quite eary and didn't draw any Inferno Titans or Baloths.
    Loss 1-1

    Round 3 against UR Eldrazi
Game 1 he started with Endless One and 2 Mimics and just killed me turn 3.
I am boarding according to Emracool's plan.
Game 2 I keep an ok hand and he had a much slower start after 2 mulligans. There was a moment where I could have played Scapehift to put him down to 1 life and killed him next turn with another land, but I decided to just wait a turn and pass. Then I realized that I am f*cked if he draws a Thought-Knot Seer. Luckily he didn't and tapped out for Reality Smasher so I could kill him next turn with Scapeshift.
Game 3 I play turn 4 Primeval into turn 5 Primeval while he holds onto a Stubborn Denial, he showed me after the game.
    Win 2-1

    Round 4 against Eldrazi Tron
He played a Tron land and Expeition Map, cracks it turn 2 and has Tron and Oblivion Sower on turn 3. I could chump with Sakura Tribe Elder and he just drew another Oblivion Sower and more lands, so I could Titan into Khalni + Titan for the win.
He's starts slow in the second game too. He puts down a 3/3 Endless one and a Mimic, counters Search during my upkeep with a Warping Wail and I have Anger of the Gods to kill his guys. At some point I could kill him next turn with the Scapeshift in my hand but he could assemble Tron, activate Eye of Ugin and took the Scapeshift with a Thought-Knot Seer. The Game ends soon after.
The third game I had to mulligan I think and kept a hand with Lands, a STE, a Bolt and a Titan I think. He has turn 3 Tron again and puts on pressure this game, at a crucial point in the game he had Oblivion Sower, Reality Smasher and a 3/3 Endless One on the board. I was at 9 life played Primeval Titan, got lands to kill Reality Smasher and tought I can stabalize and probably win with the Inferno Titan and Bolt in my hand, but then put down Ulamog the infinte Gyre (11 Mana with some to spare on turn 5?!), destroys my Titan and suddenly my only out is to topdeck a Scapeshift, wich I didn't.
    Lost 2-2

I really had fun with the deck and will play it again. I just look forward to the bannings so I don't have to play the Eldrazi and hopefully less Blood Moon decks in the future (there where quite a few at the tournament).

Free Win Red: -4 Scapeshift -2 Anger of the Gods +2 Inferno Titan +3 Obstinate Baloth +1 Relic of Progenitus

    Hi,

thanks for the guide, it's really comprehensive. I haven't read this thread for a while and tryin to catch up a bit....
So, this Free Win Red deck, I had to look it up, it's a deck that looks to put a turn 2 Blood Moon/Magus of the Moon onto the battlefield and win from there, mainly through Chandra and Koth. But it also plays Ensnaring Bridge! So why would you board in more creatures, but not Ancient Grudge? Relic of Progenitus doesn't seem to disrupt Free Win Red in any way and I am not sure that Bolt or Lava Mancer is important in that matchup, so I would probably cut some of those for Grudge?

    Hey there!
I couldn't test Matter Reshaper either, and don't know how many colorless sources I have atm. I didn't get to play much CMDR lately, work occupies me. But today I had my first game since 2 months or so and I could also trade for a Sneak Attack! I am really happy right now. Can't wait to draw that in my next games!

Edit: Almost forgot: A new Conpiracy set was announced (for the third time already)! This will probably bring some new dethrone cards with it. http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/news/announcing-conspiracy-2
Edit2: Just saw a Facebook post from the official MtG account, that Marchesa is on the throne atm. So the woman in the art (see link above) is probably her. Good times!

UWR Control is the worst matchup Affinity has, it's almost unwinnable.
Can't be sure on your sideboarding without knowing your full 75. But I'd board out Steel Overseer before Vault Skirge, as Steel Overseer is a dead card against Stony Silence and Electrolyze. You can also go down a Memnite and a Signal Pest without hurting your game to much. You want to play all the Etched Champions that you have in this matchup, as you only boarded in one I guess you play one or two in the main.
Wear/Tear can be worth it for Stony Silence since games tend to go long (although the new Natural State should be better in most cases).
Galvanic Blast can be good depending on how many creatures they play. But from what you say I would not keep it as Ghirapur AEther Grid handles Young Pyromancer quite well.
There is a new sideboard option in Sea Gate Wreckage too. Helps in grindy matchups and getting your mana when you want to play all your three drops after the sideboard.

Frank Karsten will put up a sideboard guide next week on Channel Fireball, look forward to that. If you want more input look at his old articles and also for those of Alex Majlaton, they are not up to date but most of it is still true.

Orbs do nothing against eldrazi. All the new eldrazi abilities aren't ETB. They're on cast.

Edit: Any suggestions for what to sub in for Ensnaring Bridge? I don't have the funds for purchasing that or Blood Moon at the moment. Grudge, Whipflare, and pretty much the rest of the board I've got... just not the bridge.

Not true, there are quite a few etb effects in those Eldrazi decks, the exact amount varies though between the different archetypes. Eldrazi Mimic, Thought-Knot Seer, Drowner of Hope, Wasteland Strangler and Eldrazi Skyspawner all have etb triggers. But I'm not sure if Torpor Orb is the right tool to fight the Eldrazi. It doesn't impact them as much as other decks. Dependant on their draw Tropor Orb could also be a dead card even.

Hi everyone. I just came across this thread. Several people in the RUG thread are talking about RG, so I'll try and direct them here.

I played in the SCG Classic this past weekend with RG and did a small writeup:
    https://fetchshockblog.wordpress.com/2016/01/27/scg-atlanta-modern-classic-report-rg-scapeshift/

I also did a small report on a GPT earlier this month:
    https://fetchshockblog.wordpress.com/2016/01/11/gpt-detroit-rg-scapeshift-report/

I'm enjoying the deck at the moment and plan to take it to several upcoming large events, so I look forward to discussion.

Thanks for the write up. Smile I just build the deck (except for the Scapeshifts, hopeing for a soonish reprint) but I couldn't get any games in yet. I have little time to play lately. I am running with Thien Nguyens list atm.

I like the Sudden Shocks, that is exactly the sideboard card I was looking for. It's the best option atm against Infect and the Kiki-Jiki combo decks I think.

Finally, a dedicated RG titanshift thread!

I've been having trouble against decks with permission and discard. I've been thinking of slotting in eternal witness/boseiju or even Gaea's revenge against these decks. Anyone have any advice on how to deal with these match ups? (U/B faeries, BGx/Eldrazi with discard, etc.)

My List the same as OPs, except more stomping grounds in place of forests, bolts instead of relics and 3 coursers to replace some explores/farseek.

I'll post a list once i start to learn how this forum works.

That's what Obstinate Baloth is for in the side, it's not only good against aggro but also against discard. Against blue decks you can try Boil in the sideboard. Play Boil eot, let them counter it and then play your Titan or Scapeshift during your turn. Don't use Boseiju it just weakens your combo if you play any other lands than the usual fetches, forests, mountains and Valakuts.

To post a deck list just type it in, mark the text and use the Deck button at the top of the text field.

No to overseers, i had a great hand that literally involved having 3 zero drops, a skirge and a steel overseer and it was still a turn too slow

Board out Etched Champion before Steel Overseer if you have them in the main. The match up is really luck dependent. Just hope that they draw into nothing good and you are faster. Galvanic Blast, AEther Grid and Whipflare help of course.

    I'm also considering adding:
    Flesh Carver

    Quote from HamBone651 »
@Hakim: flesh Carver seems good for the deck at first glance but takes a lot of time to get going. The Mana cost to active his ability will get annoying as well. Overall if you put time to get him going you can probably shell out a 4/4 every few turns (if not bigger) but there is so much more you can be doing. (btw this guy got cut from my deck very early after playing with him a few times). if you are looking for a new sac outlet Falkenrath Aristocrat all the way

I agree that Falkenrath Aristocrat is better than Flesh Carver. Aristocrat is one of the Decks best sac outlets.
But I think Flesh Carver is good too. I run him and am happy with him. He isn't as good of a sac outlet as others are, because of the added mana cost, but he is good body even without that effect. For 3 mana you get a 2/2 with evasion that leaves another 2/2 on the field when dying. Most of the time the token will be even bigger, because Flesh Carver is getting counters from dethrone. That you can use him as a sac oulet too is just a really nice bonus. And the effect of getting two +1/+1 counters is quite strong, it would be broken if it hadn't a mana cost attached to it. Or it would probably be a much weaker effect like +2/+2 until eot if it wouldn't be for the mana cost.

Also considering prism is 2 mana you can't sunburst it for 3. And anyone playing dryad arbor in a polymorph deck needs to probably step away from magic.

No, Dryad Arbor is quite good in Polymorph, with one Dryad Arbor and enough fetchlands you are able to run like 13 Dryad Arbors, wich gives the deck much needed consistency for it's combo.

    Quote from Oopssorryy »
Polymorph is one of the few decks I could really see Bring to Light in. While you could use Proteus Staff, I prefer having the combo not be on a 3cmc artifact. That's just not something you want to be doing with both Abrupt Decay and Kommand running around. Having 8 Polymorph is where the deck really wants to be, and even though it's mana hungry, Bring to Light is their best option IMO.

If you are worried about Abrupt Decay and Kolaghan's Command destroying your Staff then Bring to light isn't any better. The Polymorph you cast through Bring to Light still needs a creature to target and at that point Abrupt Decay and Command can ruin your day to, also many other cards like Bolt and Path.

I play both Thalakos Deceiver and Sower and I think both are pretty good. And from my experience a lot of the situations in wich Thalakos Deciever is bad, Sower of Temptation is equally bad. The immediate effect of Sower is great, on that I agree, but Thalakos deciever has it's upsides too. I haven't ever yet considered to remove any of those two from my deck.
And Blade of Selves seems pretty neat, I would have to count how many good targets it really has in my deck, but it's worth a consideration. (And you don't need to pay the 4 mana for re-equiping each turn, you then just steal 1 less creature.)

    I hear ya.[...]

Stoney Silence is quite powerful for sure, but isn't instant win against Affinity either. And I think a good mix of Ancient Grudges and additional Pyroclasms in the sideboard should be as effective. And against Tron and Amulet Bloom you can use Ancient Grudge too. Sowing Salt Crumble to Dust further helps the Tron Matchup and also against Amulet Bloom, Scapeshift and even against some other slow control decks. Aven Mindcensor isn't really needed I think. The earliest it could come down would be turn 3 and in turn 3 it is very likely that you have got the 4 mana to play Crumble to Dust.
Against the Gifts Ungiven decks Relic of Progenitus or Grafdigger's Cage are also very useful without being as narrow imho and without stretching your mana base.

Plus there are still the options of Abrupt Decay, wich can even be played mainboard and Nature's Claim, for the side, if you want an alternative to Ancient Grudge, that is also useful against Bogles.

Building a good sideboard is hard, especially if expensive cards like Spellskite are not availble. I cringe over alot of card prices too... But I hope that my opinion and ideas help you.

I'm starting testing with my deck that has a light splash in black and in white for 4 Abrupt Decay in the main and like 8 white sideboard cards.

    [...]

    And this is my sideboard:

I tune it to fit the current meta, I can use Rakdos Charm, and other BR goodness.

I don't think there is any need to play a white splash and very few cards wich are worth a light black splash. The only interesting white card is Leyline, and that can be played without white sources even. The lifeloss and inconsistency that a 4-color mana base brings with are not worth the little advantages that your sideboard cards give you.

-Aven Mindcensor: Don't know for what you would want that? It's only really good against Scapeshift, but in that matchup Slaughter Games is better. Also Sowing Salt and Boil are availble.
-Favor of the Mighty: Is just not needed I think. Just play Spellskite, wich also owns Infect and Bogles pretty hard but is also good against Twin and Burn and just a good blocker in general.
-Timely Reinforcements: Powerful sideboard card, but as said I don't think I'd like to play 4-color and there are just so many other cards that do similar things. Baloth and Courser come to mind here.
-Noxious Revival: I am not a fan of this card, I just don't think this deck needs it?
-Unburial Rites: Really not sure what this is for? You can't reanimate Emrakul with and then the number of targets becomes rather few. And we also don't have a way to tutor it like Gifts Ungiven decks do.
-Fracturing Gust: Triple green can already be hard for the 2 color versions of this deck and 5 mana is sometimes to slow. Against Affinity there a some many other options like Shatter Storm and Ancient Grudge wich would be better imho. Against Bogles there is Back to Nature (plus the already mentioned Spellskite). And Nature's Claim is good against both artifacts and enchantments.
-Stoney Silence: See above there are so many good options in red and green that this is in no way needed.
-Golgari Charm: This is also pretty unnecessary. Pyroclasm, Anger of the Gods and Engineered Explosives are much better against creatures (with EE also being good against other things like bogles) and the enchantment hate is not needed very often, but as said, for that there are also quite a few options. And for Twin there is also the possibility of Rending Volley, wich is also better here, as it's easier to keep up a single red against Deciever Exarch than it is to keep up a green and a black mana.

As playable/needed black cards there are only Slaughter Games and Abrupt Decay imho.
