Quote from Mtg2005mtgWow you are guys are getting ripped off. Here is some stats I do know for a fact.
You should be able to buy a booster box singular for $90 if you look in the right places, certainly never over $95 especially from online. You should depending on luck open anywhere from 5-9 mythics.
That is $2.63 a booster pack.
If you buy 3 boxes you typically get them for around $87 a box total. That is $2.41 per pack. If you buys a case god forbid I have twice for myself. That is $81.67 a box sometimes less if you look in the right places. That is $2.26 per pack.
Your shop owners for your LGS pay depending on their shop level anywhere from $54-65 maybe 70 for new shops.
Your shop owners should charge at most $12.00 for a draft with prizes. That means an 8 person draft everyone gets 3 packs that 24 packs. $10 per person covers that at a the most, usually $9 per person then $3 per person is applied towards a prize pools.
The simple way of doing this is 8 packs for the prize pool if your LGS is STINGY. with 8 players. That means 4-3-1 prizes or maybe all 8 to first depending on how competitive the shop is.
I have done $10 drafts that give a 2 packs to 1st and 1 to second. Thats a typical good deal you can sometimes come across. I have done 4 person drafts with $10 entry fees, 2 packs to first place, fairly common. The shop paid about $5 for the 3 packs you are using so they are making a $5 profit, they can afford to sacrafice $4 from 1 persons of the 4 profit for a small award. YOUR LGS IS CHEAP!
I play FNMs 16 people $10 entry first place gets 7 packs Promo Card and sleeves/deckbox are random prize give aways. sometimes more. I have played a 40 player FNM at that shop before First place got 15 packs and break downs,

Say you have 4 friends, that is 12 packs per draft.
You guys can draft 3x each for the four of you for $23.75. 3 drafts for that. Or you can do two drafts for
$11.87 per person per draft with 6 packs in the prize pool for each draft.
Or no prizes and you guys draft for fun for $7.91 per draft.
You might be broke but I am sure over a couple weeks or more you can all muster up money to go in on a box together. Those calculations are based on $95 boxes. Very Standard for all 10 shops in my area. I can find them for $90 if I haggle. If I buy in bulk a case from my local shop I could probably get it $80 a box or maybe even $78 a box because I would be a "big" spender.
REMEMBER< THE SHOP NEEDS THE MONEY JUST AS BAD AS YOU!!! MTG IS NOT THAT PROFITABLE FOR LGS.
Your tournmanets are not likely even DCI sanctioned. So why bother, just host your tournaments. Hell become your own "Game" shop out of your house with your buddies. Have you and your friends, go to the shop when they aren't watching ask people, we do our own drafts. You and your friend goes in on a box, charge people $12 for draft no tax. Make your money back from your $81 a box from the case you guys purchased for $480. Or just casually between you and your friends. Only have one friend? You and he can approach people find 2 more and you have your play group.
Shops do not pay 52 for boxes. They pay 73+ so yeah after credit card fees they are making like 13 bucks per box. Our shop is 3,000 sqft and costs $4k per month just in rent alone not counting all the other expenses.
Support your shop if you want somewhere to play. Not saying you can't give them feedback on payouts or complain to them but just don't be surprised when they shut down after you find cheaper places to buy your boxes from.

I think you'd be better of using confidence intervals rather than p-values. This is better at communicating the information to non-stats people. The other thing I'd recommend is to bootstrap your residuals, as this will go some way to counteracting the small sample size.

Read: No thoughtseize, I'm cancelling my box pre-order.

On topic; Star City usually uses a system of put up X quantity at price A, if X quantity sells out put up Y quantity at price A+1, and repeat.

Watch out though about posting this kind of stuff on MTGS, many users don't seem to like it, for instance here and here.

After every play of your opponents sit there and think before saying okay. At the end of every game whinge about mana flood.

Wikipedia lists 16 known arch types:
Triangular arch
Round arch, also known as a semi-circular arch
Segmental arch (less angle than a semi-circle)
Unequal round arch, also known as rampant round arch
Lancet arch
Equilateral pointed arch
Shouldered flat arch, also known as a jack arch
Trefoil arch, also known as a three-foiled cusped arch
Horseshoe arch
Three-centered arch
Elliptical arch
Inflexed arch
Ogee arch
Reverse ogee arch
Tudor arch
Parabolic arch
Wikipedia lists details of 9 of these arch types. I have linked to these to demonstrate how far off base you are.
In Magic, however, I believe that there is only one arch type.
[CARD]
Runed arch[/CARD]
And this "runed arch" does not fit into the existing arch types listed on Wikipedia. The closest arch type would be parabolic.
(EDIT: also dragon arch)
TL;DR: Before presenting yourself as correct and your statements as truth, you may achieve credibility by using the correct words and spelling in your title. What you wanted to be talking about are archetypes, i.e., prototypical categories, not arch types, i.e., structures which "[span] a space and supports[a] structure and weight above it".
EDIT: OP, it's one word, not two.

Now lets get back to talking about the important stuff, what is your favorite shape of arch?

EDIT: DESPITE WHAT SOME OF YOU MAY THINK, YOU CAN DO THESE THINGS WITHOUT COMING OFF AS A TOTAL WANKER. YOU'LL PROBABLY OFFEND THE MOST SENSITIVE PEOPLE, BUT IF YOU ARE THE KIND OF PERSON TO EVEN CONTEMPLATE THESE TECHNIQUES YOU WERE PROBABLY GOING TO OFFEND THEM ANYWAY. IN SHORT, YOU CAN DO THESE THINGS WITHOUT BEING OSTRACIZED BY THOSE AROUND YOU.
EDIT: IF YOU PLAY AGAINST ME, AND I'M PULLING THESE KIND OF SHENANIGANS, AND YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO STOP... JUST ASK, AND I WILL.
Some of you may find suggestions made by myself and others in this thread to be ethically questionable in game practice. Your use of any of them should be determined by your conscience, any applicable laws, and in line with instructions from the head judge. For instance, strategy number 3 below is one that I would not typically use on minors.
---
1/ Make tokens with pictures of all the regulars at your local store. Then, use the one that matches the person when you play them.
This is just plain creepy. But it also allows you to say wonderful things like "stop hitting yourself" when you attack, and "stop killing yourself" when they destroy your tokens. This is almost as annoying as people making Izzet puns.
Take it to the next level by: Go to a tournament with tokens pre-made of people you have never met before. Websites are a great source of images for this purpose. I imagine there is nothing creepier than sitting down and having your opponent pull out tokens with your face on them.
2/ Do your best to resemble your opponents "erotic" token, sleeve, and deck box art.
A number of people use anime art locally on these products. It's great to draw attention to the art with comments such as "she really looks like me, don't you think?" (bonus points for asking a spectator if they agree with your assertion while adopting the pose of the depicted person), "my breasts look better than hers" (works even better if you are male!), "I can pose like that for you if you like" (wink, or if you want to take it way too far lick your lips).
3/ Hit on your opponent.
Assuming you are male, and they are male too, this is a great way to put off your homophobic opponents.
Remember, its probably polite to stop something like this as soon as the match is over. Just whip it out, the strategy that is, during matches. You don't want a reputation as the person that hits on everyone all of the time at your LGS.
4/ Use acetone to remove the text box of your cards.
See Altered Art Rules below
Artistic modifications are acceptable in sanctioned tournaments, provided that the modifications do not make the card art unrecognizable, contain substantial strategic advice, or contain offensive images. Artistic modifications also may not obstruct or change the mana cost or name of the card.
The Head Judge is the final authority on acceptable cards for a tournament.
You don't break the general guidelines set forth. While the Head Judge could say no, the card is not going to be a noticeably different thickness.
Take it to the next level by: doing this in the first month of a new standard format to throw your opponents who have not memorized what cards do yet.
5/ When you know your opponent has a difficult turn coming up, stop them to call a judge to watch for "slow play".
I would not recommend doing this often, or the judge at the event may catch on. While this may give them some time to think, many players will get frustrated that you've called a judge over to watch them, before faltering under the judges watchful eye.
---
So these are 5 strategies to get the ball rolling. While I haven't used all of them, I've definitely used some of them, and seriously contemplated all of the others. One day, they might get a work out.
What strategies do you use to mess with your opponents heads?
