Obvious answer is 3 on each.

    There's a difference between "deal 1, deal 1, deal 1" and "deal 3"

"Obvious answer is 3 on each" is unnecessary. If it was obvious the poster wouldn't have asked the quesiton. Might not have been intended to be rude, but it sounds rude.

The question was answered and this thread has been done with for about a week. Locking this to avoid any off-topic discussion in reply to this post. When you see rudeness in a post and you want to do something about it, please report it using the 'report' button in the lower corner.

Rathmaker, what you did was the proper way to do things. My guess is that the gentelman didn't tell the DCI that not only was his daughter in the event, but he was also in the same event. There is no situation under which I can believe it would be ethical to allow what the parent wanted to happen. Too many things can happen as a result of his "advice".

Note, that Cryptic Command is a poor example, since you can always cast it by choosing modes three and four.

Assuming the opponent has no creatures to tap, is that because mode 3 isn't actually targeting creatures?

Yes, in order for a spell to target anything, the word target must be used in the text. In this case it says "Tap ALL creatures target player controls" meaning, regardless of whether the person has creatures, you can legally choose this mode for Cryptic Command.

Another garbage counterspell. Keep hosing blue Wizards. There's only 2 colors in Magic, green and white. What an absolute joke.

I want to make something very clear. This is NOT the SGDoc that streams on Twitch. This is some bad impostor.

  • posted a message on Casting Madness: Exile vs Graveyard
From the original Wizards Rules Primer on Madness at http://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/feature/rules-primer-madness-2002-01-24

First, a replacement effect optionally removes the card from the game for a short time, keeping it safe from your opponent’s tricks. Then, a triggered ability lets you play the spell for its madness cost the next time you get a chance to play an instant. Finally, if you choose not to play the card after all, it’s put into your graveyard

What is the point of Exile? I thought the reason for Exile is that cards cannot come
    back into play.

Well, the rules on Exile can be found in Rule 406:

    406. Exile

406.1. The exile zone is essentially a holding area for objects. Some spells and abilities exile an object without any way to return that object to another zone. Other spells and abilities exile an object only temporarily.
406.2. To exile an object is to put it into the exile zone from whatever zone it’s currently in. An exiled card is a card that’s been put into the exile zone.
406.3. Exiled cards are, by default, kept face up and may be examined by any player at any time. Cards “exiled face down” can’t be examined by any player except when instructions allow it. However, once a player is allowed to look at a card exiled face down, that player may continue to look at that card as long as it remains exiled, even if the instruction allowing the player to do so no longer applies. A card exiled face down has no characteristics, but the spell or ability that exiled it may allow it to be played from exile. Unless that card is being cast face down (see rule 707.4), the card is turned face up just before the player announces that he or she is playing the card (see rule 601.2).
406.4. Face-down cards in exile should be kept in separate piles based on when they were exiled and how they were exiled. If a player is instructed to choose an exiled card, the player may choose a specific face-down card only if the player is allowed to look at that card. Otherwise, he or she may choose a pile of face-down exiled cards, and then a card is chosen at random from within that pile. If choosing such a card is part of casting a spell or activating an ability, the chosen card isn’t revealed until after that cost is fully paid. (See rule 601.2i.)
406.5. Exiled cards that might return to the battlefield or any other zone should be kept in separate piles to keep track of their respective ways of returning. Exiled cards that may have an impact on the game due to their own abilities (such as cards with haunt) or the abilities of the cards that exiled them should likewise be kept in separate piles.
406.6. An object may have one ability printed on it that causes one or more cards to be exiled, and another ability that refers either to “the exiled cards” or to cards “exiled with [this object].” These abilities are linked: the second refers only to cards that have been exiled due to the first. See rule 607, “Linked Abilities.”
406.7. If an object in the exile zone becomes exiled, it doesn’t change zones, but it becomes a new object that has just been exiled.
406.8. Previously, the exile zone was called the “removed-from-the-game zone.” Cards that were printed with text that “removes [an object] from the game” exiles that object. The same is true for cards printed with text that “sets [an object] aside.” Cards that were printed with that text have received errata in the Oracle card reference.

I agree with OP on the unnecessary wording. It reminds me of the text on Ally creatures when they say "Whenever THIS CARD or another ally enters the battlefield..." when they really just need to say "Whenever an ally enters the battlefield..."
Same with Constellation cards. Why doesn't Confusion in the Ranks specify itself as well? It's just inconsistent.

Actually, what you said is not true. They have to say this card or another ally. That is the only way you get the bonus from the card you are casting. Its triggered ability can't trigger on itself.

  • posted a message on WotC cutting appearance fees for Platinum Pros and HoFs
I don't think some people understand why Pros are upset. Playing Professional Magic is an expensive proposition. They have Pro Tours and GPs all around the world. They presented the incentive as one of gaining platinum status so that you could gain these appearance fees that justify you going to the GPs in far flung areas and the PTs in exotic locations that are an expensive fligth and hotel or apartment stay away. Now, as Alexander Hayne noted in his tweet (https://twitter.com/InsayneHayne/status/724284766267256832) "Platinum is now actually negative EV, 250$ is probably less than the RPTQ promo is worth". Attaining platinum is no longer worth the effort, period. It is too expensive to justify flying all around to GPs. The issue is that they made this change sooooo late in the season, after so many ppl had spent so much time and money to get the platinum status and then have this announcement flung on them. Did they ever consider consulting with some pros about changes they had in mind and what they thought might be the repercussions of them? Of course not, all Wizards cares aobut is their bottom line, clearly not the players, as this announcement clearly shows. When you have both Jon Finkel and Brian Kibler, two of the more successful Magic players, not only completely disagreeing with the change, but actually wrting articles/blogs on the issue, you know there is something seriously wrong going on.

I don't think this has too much to do with magic. I think you got social anxiety disorder. I used to have it too. To see a therapist or read some books and slowly work it out.

But it has a lot to do with MTG, because it's something I'm trying to get into, but am held back. I'm simply asking if there are ways i could get around it, perhaps by people who have had the same issues getting into MTG. I am not like this, entirely, with normal social settings like being at work, or generally being out. It's when it comes to socializing in an environment like a game night or something similar.

Perhaps I am wrong, and you can correct me if that is so. It seems like you are more nervous around people you don't know and more have difficulty meeting new people, whereas you have no trouble at all around people you know. If that is the case, then I can say that I had that issue as well. The funny thing about it is that I think Magic really got me out of that shell. Why? Simply put, most Magic players are really cool and will talk to you if you say hello. I would just consider going to your local game store for one of their normal events, say a standard or a sealed or draft. I would get there ahead of time and try to get acquainted with the people around. It really helped me out a lot. It may work for you as well. Good luck!

  • posted a message on FNM Issues, Need Judges thoughts
    Quote from AdamM »
"Its just FNM" is actually Wizards policy in terms of the FNM REL; its FNM so it is a teaching ground and learning experience. If you read the rules for FNM level play, most infractions that would be made are "takesies backsies" or something close to that effect. It is actually quite difficult to obtain a game loss.

For the first instance I think you did the right thing, and I am glad to see the girl admitted to losing and it was actually the father whining about it.

In the 2nd instance, without a DCI judge it will be difficult to report anything officially. As people have already said, you can always ask the store owner who acts as Head Judge at FNM level when no DCI Judge or Rules Advisor is present. If the owner refuses to not have someone observe your match; report the Owner then. Its never fun to play and have people "helping" others even if its just FNM.

You can still report players for conduct or cheating. Cheating is not tolerated at any level, including FNM. Consider the following:

    Serious Problems
Certain actions will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Every effort should be made to educate players
before and during events; however, ignorance is not an acceptable defence of these actions. Any player
engaging in the following must be removed from your event and, at the Organizer's discretion, removed from
    the venue entirely:
 Aggressive, violent or abusive behavior (physical or verbal).
 Intentionally and knowingly breaking or letting an opponent break game or tournament rules, or
lying. (“Bluffing” about cards opponents can't normally see is permitted).
 Determining match outcomes by incentives, coercion, or outside-the-game methods, or gambling on
    any part of a tournament.
 Theft (including things like replacing a card in a draft with one from a player’s binder).
Removing players in this way is called a Disqualification, and we must always try to educate our players on
why these actions are unacceptable. Also let the player know that while your decision is final, the Judge
Program would still like to hear his or her side of the story. You can contact your local Regional Coordinator,
high level Judge, or WPN Representative to guide you through the process of a Disqualification.

So, as you can see, disqualifications still occur. For the record, that document can be found at https://www.wizards.com/ContentResources/Wizards/WPN/Main/Documents/Magic_The_Gathering_Judging_at_Regular_REL_PDF1.pdf

I find it hilarious that you think Standard is somehow faster than Legacy. That's a really good one. Secondly, I am done arguing with you about Hearthstone. However, I will say this. Free does not mean people will stay around. Look at the plethora of free to play games online that basically have nobody playing them. You also have to provide continuous content to keep a large number of people playing. Otherwise, people just move on to another form of game or go back to playing Magic Online.

Finally, an argument has two people. It cannot continue unless there are two people. There is rarely if ever only one person to blame for an argument. But let's not forget, you started this whole thing by providing an opinion, which you are perfectly welcome to do, that you knew might not be agreed on by people in the community. You basically invited debate. Sometimes debate leads to argument. Talking about other people starting arguments is hypocritical. This whole thing started with the ideas you presented in your opening post, not anywhere after that.

The problem with letting it go, pink_moon, is that the boyfriend will continue to take advantage of the situation in every upcoming tournament. Next time it might not be with this same person. The precedent has to be set that if someone doesn't want you to watch, you don't watch.

Just as a note, your best course of action there would be to not respond at all. A card that is face down has no name whatsoever, irregardless of what the card is called face up. So if you do not respond, all he does is kill the face down creature. This is just a note for you, as I am assuming you turned it face up in order to return something from the graveyard that you needed or wanted to get.

You are correct. Since there was no card on the board that could untap a creature, his creature will remain tapped during the intervening player's turn.
