So this change came about because a member of the CAG, you know the advisors for the format to the RC, didn't understand the rules (red flag right there) and was upset because it made their deck not work (changing rules for their meta). And of course the obvious insider trading we saw.
Yeah, not thrilled.

May 14, 2020Posted in: The Rumor MillQuote from Marl Karx »I wonder if they ever considered making the Companions start in the Command Zone. Then, if they got to be a problem in a given format you could just say that the Command Zone couldn't be utilized in that format.
Problem with that is that emblems exist in the command zone, would have to be an entirely new zone.

Chandra's Spellbook seems fine.
Secret Lair Enemy Fetchlands on the otherhand, that's such a disgusting cashgrab move from WotC, but this is the WotC of the last couple years so I am not entirely surprised. At least they didn't completely bone LGSes on this one this time.

Apr 11, 2017Let's take a character with a moderately interesting moral conflict, strip it all away in a lazy retcon, not replace it with anything even remotely compelling, and then massively overrepresent her on cards. Brilliant.Posted in: The Rumor Mill
Feb 25, 2015Posted in: The Rumor MillQuote from asrttyoxo »Okay since it says Mark Zug did the art for the pack, I decided to compile the list of all of the cards he did that could be in Modern Masters and would be "face of the set" cards. Basically I took rares or mythics.
We also have to take into account that he may have done new art for a card which may be even more likely the case than one of these on the face.
Indeed, the packaging for MM1 all featured new artwork, and it makes sense that they would continue that.
Given that, I'm going to hope they've granted one of my most obscure wishes,
and we're getting Sword of Feast and Famine, Sword of War and Peace, and/or Sword of Body and Mind
with new art by Mark Zug to mirror the original two swords.

Lol, Donate... I'm pretty sure they modelled it after Gary Busey.
And I thank NGW for reminding me of Clergy en-vec, so good.
Jan 17, 2014Yes, that's right. Stolen Identity has a single target, so if that target is no longer on the battlefield, Stolen Identity will be countered on resolution; that also applies to copies of an encoded Stolen Identity.Posted in: Magic Rulings Archives

Exactly what reasoning could be gleaned from inserting a delusional homeless woman into a night of Tarot and Moons over my Hammy, only the Vishanti could know.
Care to meditate on this with me on the snowcapped mountains of Tibet?
Apr 11, 2013Posted in: New Card DiscussionQuote from NGWI just do not get the hype on this thing.
It doesn't fit in aggro, I mean are you really going to play this thing on turn 2? Something you are never going to swing with outside of facing an empty board because you don't want to risk your (conditional) card draw? Plus playing him that early are you really going to have your entire hand played out by then? And if you are playing him later...you should already be pretty damn far ahead.
And control? I'd much rather play Bob and have guaranteed draw when I untap, especially since I probably won't ever have an empty hand if I am playing my deck right.
Thing is overhyped to hell and back.
This is, by far, the only post in this thread or the card introduction thread that has any shred of sanity whatsoever. I have been speculating on cards for over a decade to great success, both as a profiteer and a player, and I am 95% sure that the Scrivener is first-class junk.
Of course, I am not one to spout a dogmatic statement without support, so without further adieu, I will list the reasons why it does not work. All scenarios will be under the assumption that we are playing the Standard format, which is where he would be most-likely to see play (Bob just outclasses him).
First, let's assume we are playing a strong, fast Rakdos-style aggro deck. We want to hit hard and fast and bring our opponent's life total down to 0 by turn 5, or else we probably lose. Let's assume we are on the play, which is favorable for the scrivener. I will present to you a very favorable start that will allow our hand to empty quickly.
Turn 1: We have 7 cards in hand, and play a Gravecrawler after a Blood Crypt.
Turn 2: We have 5 cards in hand and draw. We play a Swamp and a Scrivener.
Turn 3: We have 4 cards in hand and draw. We play a Blood Artist and a Pillar of Flame after a Dragonskull Summit...I sure hope that Gravecrawler did not die, as we need to empty our hand!
Turn 4: We have 2 cards in hand and draw. We play a land and a Hellrider with a lone Searing Spear left.
We can get our hand empty on Turn 5 at the very latest--Bob started giving us cards from the moment he is dropped! With the draws that I have described, we should usually be winning, anyway by this point. But because we have to empty our hand, we are going to be RAVAGED by Supreme Verdict (could actually be an instant loss if your goal is to get the hand empty).
Yes, one can argue that it allows us to potentially keep on drawing gas against midrange/control decks trying to stabilize. But when they slam down Thragtusk, I am not sure how an extra card will allow you to deal with it any better. And a 2/1 for 2 does little to contribute to the aggro game plan.
Does Scrivener have a place in midrange/control? I sincerely doubt it.
Jund/Dega requires careful allocation of its resources throughout the match, and an empty hand is usually a distinct lack of card quality. We cannot be casting Rakdos's Return with X equaling the cards in their hand minus 2 simply to enable a weak card-drawing engine on a 2/1 stick, which is vulnerable to every single piece of removal in the format.
And Esper has Sphinx's Revelation and Augur of Bolas.
Hellbent was a horrible keyword because getting the hand empty was never worth the effect...and trust me, I am hellbent on trying to convince people to avoid investing good money on a playset of cards you can likely be buying for $1.99 in a couple of months.
You want black card advantage? Stick to Sign in Blood.
