I won't argue over the power creep of creatures in recent years, but of all of the things to complain about, you choose Thunderbreak Regent?

It's good, yes. It's better than good for its cost, yes. But it's only this good because of the quality of cards other colors get ... and it's still not even AS good.

standard is easy to get into since there are events pretty often, it's the most popular, it has fewer sets to acquire cards from/memorize meta...i recommend just watching twitch streams of people who are playing standard, watch SCG events and that sort of thing when they come along, look up CVM vs BBD videos on youtube (they're quite long and usually do like 5-6 matches and discussing things)

there's never gonna be a good time to get into standard as a beginner, if a set just came out cards are more expensive and nobody else can give you advice because they don't know what's good either. but coming in late means you miss things like prerelease, game day, and the development of the meta, the observation of which really improves you as a player within a format. you just sort of have to go in when you feel like you're relatively informed/aware of your options and whether it seems fun enough to warrant spending the time and $. that's as good a time as you'll ever find.

to choose a deck/cards you wanna pretty much watch gameplay and find a deck that plays cards that have a good balance of fun, competitiveness, affordability etc. if that deck seems like a contender, just build it. worst case scenario, it's tier 2 but you have cardboard money so you can just trade it.

Narset is horrible. You play her, you die. lol? Not even on the same level as Nissa Worldwaker which had the same amount of early hype.

RG aggro seems to be a clear cut crowd favorite but I still think the deck can be hated out.

YOU NEED ANSWERS FOR STORMBREATH DRAGON!!!!!!!!!!!!

Simple as that. You can't blame WoTC for not giving them to you. Plummet, Ultimate Price.

Stopped reading right there. Seriously, how can you make such outlandish statements. It's laughable that you think she has a low power level and even more evident you haven't built a deck around her.

Its easy to make a statement like that, since Narset does nothing to protect herself and change the board state. Planeswalkers who are unable to do those things are pretty bad 9 times out of 10. Maybe Narset happens to be the 1 out of 10 times a walker like that can be good, but right now the consensus is that Narset is bad until proven otherwise.

On the other hand, so much aggro. Forget control, there's barely any midrange at all present. Is this new standard basically an aggro or get out format? Its starting to look that way.

narset is good but she's kind of a win more imo. like, when you're at 8 mana, have the board stabilized, and have a grip full of counters or are just safe/ahead enough to protect her, then she's backbreaking (rebounding Utter End or Dig Through time is pretty gg)

    you don't cast her on turn 4 in a control deck...unless you're already safe/stable, like i said.

idk, i think she's worth playing in control if you're in u/w but i think she's overhyped because she isn't as inherently powerful as JTMS. Hell even KTK Sarkhan can at least come in and immediately kill a guy while also being a clock.

it's still pretty early but i have a feeling that she will be an effective role player but not necessarily a format defining powerhouse or anything.

-In general: What do you think about this deck? Are there some cards I have missed and I should play?

honestly, i don't think u/r control is all that good. some sort of u/r tempo or flyers, maybe, you could run some nice beefy haste flyers with counterspells and that might be okay, i think some guy played stuff like Icefall Regent and basically did "u/r dragons" with some ashcloud phoenix...that looked sweet actually.

but like compare u/r control to u/b control. you're casting magma jets while u/b is playing murderous cut. you're topdecking anger of the gods against R/G monsters while u/b got that crux of fate. yeah, it just doesn't seem as good to me on paper tbh.

as for what you missed, roast and probably stoke the flames are going to be crucial. jet and strike don't even 1for1 stormbreath, tasigur, rhino, anafenza...honestly i still don't think roast/stf are gonna cut it, creatures are just ridiculous in standard these days...but i don't know, i'd love to be wrong here because i do love izzet. i just see so many situations where you've got the mana, you've got the counter, and then you get into a PLA battle and you just lose out due to the other guy's spot removal actually being relevant.

imo standard frequently turns into both players having 4-5-6 creatures each that can't profitably attack and so this card can actually be very strong for breaking through that sort of thing. and because most board wipes (aside from drown in sorrow which doesn't even necessarily wipe your 2/4s and 0/3s and 4/5s) are 5 mana, this thing can get in before those drop.

however i had to consider the active board state of standard games, i think if you look at this card in a vacuum you might see 'oh it's a conditional enchantment that doesn't do as much if i'm not already in a very good position with tons of creatures.'

it also has to compete with other cards in your 75 and some people might just prefer to draw a removal spell or bomb or something that is a little bit more proactive.

  • posted a message on Why are fetch lands sooooo expensive and sought after??? When evolving wilds can fulfill their function better.
there is a really big difference between tapped and untapped. that tempo loss might not seem as significant if you're playing against beginners who run a bunch of singletons of inefficient creatures they got at their last draft and are casting 1/3s on turn 4, but against real decks, you WILL lose games where you cracked an evolving wilds instead of a fetchland and ended up not being able to play that turn 1 creature in an aggro deck, or ended up not having enough mana to cast a board wipe after opponent dumped a bunch of small creatures and anthems.

IMO, once you need treasure cruise (and have the graveyard to fuel it) chances are your opponent has stabilized the board with a sweeper or clogged it up with fatties. In that case, drawing a land, a 1 drop and a titan' strength isn't likely to do very much for you.
Now, if you had a grip full of burn spells after a treasure cruise...that might be the reach you need.

Focus your deck around Butcher of the Horde (4 of 'em) and token-producing cards (they give you things to sacrifice to buff Butcher without losing so much card advantage. IE hordeling outburst gives you 3 tokens to sacrifice whereas if that card was a creature instead it would only be one creature. and a lot more mana to cast 3 spells instead of one.)

a lot of the best token producing cards are pretty expensive (elspeth and brimaz come to mind) but you have cheap alternatives through cards like Hordeling Outburst, Raise the Alarm etc.

You also want a few Mardu charms, some good removal (murderous cut, hero's downfall, thoughtseize if you can afford them, arc trail against aggro, banishing light to exile big creatures)

It's a bad card by itself. It's meant to be an enabler. IMO it's too clunky to be worth including. I can't overstate the power of the new delve draw spells but I don't really thing it's worth it. It lets you scry a bunch which is neat but it isn't like the green enablers (can't remember off the top of my head - they let you choose a creature or land off the top 4 and dc the rest or something along those lines) it doesnt really provide any raw advantage, just library manipulation and cards in your graveyard.

the way i see it, it's either a dead card that does nothing (while a removal might have just won you the game instead), or you're losing card advantage AND tempo by paying mana to cast it and then essentially being down a card for it, which makes your hand weaker even after a dig through time.

Yeah imo your instict is correct, other people are just brewing rn and it ain't always pretty.

I don't think it gets much better than Sphinx. While it doesn't outright kill the 4/4s produced by Sarkhan (who is indestructible anyway) and Nissa, the 3 power DOES take out Mantis Rider which is quite relevant. In a control deck your goal is to stabilize and win through card advantage. Sphinx doesn't need to represent a 3 turn clock or anything to do its job since it fixes your draws and allows you to keep the lockdown going.

    Play both. :p

I think Sarkhan is better in a vacuum (SBD can't draw you cards and kill creatures) but SBD is resilient to white removal and has that monstrous effect which might make it better in certain metas/matchups.

I think it's a pretty good shell overall but I don't really like the miser's Eidolon and Fanatic. Eidolon is a bad topdeck late game when you need reach, and Fanatic seems inconsistent as a one-of that will (more frequently than you might expect) be difficult to play in a 20 land deck. I feel like dropping them and adding +1 Stoke and +1 LS would be better. It makes the general strategy of 'get in there with dudes and finish them with burn when the board stabilizes' easier to accomplish. And yeah Stoke and Fanatic have the same cost but you can't convoke for Fanatic if you're stuck on 3 lands.

Ha! I love this! I feel like it may struggle a bit with durdling (the other guy is actively making plays while you're just sort of sitting there trying to survive and assemble a 3 card combo...kinda awkward) but the wins would be so satisfying.
