I ran this in child of alara, because I am a bad person. More efficient, less reliable version of corpse dance. Which is a better version of genesis and volrath's stronghold. So I dedicated the deck to searching up one or the other, along with a sac outlet, around turn 4-5 every game. Did I mention I was a bad person?

posted a message on Ruhan: the Politics of War
just my personal opinion, and if you're committed to jeskai then fair enough (although I'd probably do zedruu over ruhan...but then, zedruu is definitely not a "push game toward a conclusion" commander") - but imo phelddagrif is, and will probably always be, the most political commander. Ruhan's not really political at all, except that he gives you an "excuse" to attack...and will frequently make attacks you really wish he didn't. Phelddagrif gives you total control of your politics and gives you a wincon, carrot, and strong blocker all in one, and is nigh invincible to boot. There's a few political red cards, but probably nearly as many in green. I suppose he doesn't force the game to a conclusion as quickly, but that's mostly because he doesn't force you to make bad decisions.

I guess what I'm worried about is [...] my students feeling like I'm manipulating them!
Well obviously you want to manipulate them, otherwise what's the fun of playing politics?

I've built a few phelddagrif versions that are 90% removal (excluding lands) and basically pure politics, and it tends to win a lot while still letting the game happen. If your goal is to let games develop then it's a good way to go, and it lets you do lots of amusing things ("I'll give you 3 hippos if you attack him with your ulamog!" etc). If you don't have the stones to play emperor Palpatine and crush a bunch of 7th graders, though, it may not be a great idea :p and group hug sucks imo, though who knows with 7th graders. They might like it.

my best suggestion for stupid-silly-bad-fun decks would be spirit/arcane tribal with oyobi, who split the heavens or the unspeakable.

Gwafa is my favorite example of a "political" card that is not political whatsoever. Putting a bribery token on an opponents creature doesn't "assuage their anger", it just motivates them to kill Gwafa so they can attack again, while giving them fuel to make it easier. On top of that, he only works proactively (unlike, say, Ith, High Arcanist) so you have to use him before you even know if their creature is planning on attacking you, instead of a mutually profitable attack on someone else. Far more political would be the rarely-played sedge scorpion, because he actually motivates sending at attack elsewhere, doesn't fuel your enemies, costs less, and doesn't generally motivate removal. Gwafa is just horribad. 2/10 for being a grey ogre.

You think I'd forget to do this? Well I didn't!

    5 = awesome, 1 = utter trash

    For reference:

...weird, no one has a name that starts with the back half of the alphabet. How unusual.

posted a message on I think what we need most from the new commander set is a powerful Boros general.
There's so much interesting design space in RW! Equipment! Helix burn! Forcing attacks! Equipment named sunforger! Combine random R and W abilities together! Something!

    ......Damn.

She's definitely more the grindy type of commander. Seems great with cards like STEve and yavimaya elder and fleshy and whatnot. Even an every-turn raise dead starting the turn you cast her seems excellent. Still, whenever I start to think about making a GB commander, I end up just remaking Glissa again because she has the most excellent ability ever created on a magic card.

It's a bit frustrating that GB seems to get two of the most powerful legends in recent memory, while RW gets bad french vanilla beaters, though. Have a heart for the underdog, wizards.

So, people want the two colors that care most about combat to have face legends that don't care about combat. Interesting.
How about legends that actually provide payoff that scales reasonably for EDH? Even if she was an unconditional 7/7 indestructible flyer for 5 she'd still be mediocre at best in a format like EDH.

Also, both her and the other dude make no sense in terms of their goal. They both look like voltrons, but the work needed to make them powerful basically involves either mostly-killing your opponents without her, or casting fat creatures that aren't your commander, neither of which fit cohesively with a voltron strategy. But mostly they're just freaking BORING. They're essentially french vanilla creatures. And there's so much good design space for RW!

Here's an example I just thought up off the top of my head for a cool RW ability: "whenever this creature attacks, tutor an equipment onto it", emulating godo and stonehewer and caring about combat. Or how about "creatures your opponents control must attack, creatures you control have +2/+0 and first strike when blocking". That's R and W and caring about combat, and is at least interesting. Or how about "Whenever a creature you control attacks, deal 1 damage to target creature and gain 1 life"? Any of those abilities would be way cooler, would scale way better to EDH, and would make sense.

I mean seriously, wizards. They clearly aren't worried about accidentally breaking commander, because they already did insane things like printing derevi and prossh, and mazirek looks equally insane. Throw RW a freakin' bone here.
