    Maro said that they didn't want to go with "editions" because it makes NEW players feel like they are 14 editions behind. Naming each core set with the year they're meant for doesnt give that response.

    Good thing it's red and legendary. The effects are downright broken.

    Created a card called "Quilled Mastiff" that got +2/+2 if it was damaged. Wizards made it better calling it "Wild Defiance". Even the creature depicted looks like a Quilled Mastiff.

    Boros –No problems with the abilities. I’d just like to see him as less of a bulkhead.
    Selesnya- It would be nice if you gave it a sort of “Cathar’s Crusade” ability. Or an emblem that would “prevent X damage where X is the number of creatures you tap”.
    Golgari – This looks decent. May I suggest an ability that would “sacrifice a creature you control: return target creature from the graveyard to the battlefield” for flavor reasons?
    Dimir – I love it, really The Ultimate should be 4 times?
    Rakdos – It doesn’t look sadistic enough. I want to see him make creatures get reckless and rip each other apart.
    Simic – I feel that the ultimate is better as “double the +1/+1 counters on permanents you control”. You don’t need more creatures…you just need more graft and power”. It’s an underwhelming Ultimate anyway.
    Izzet – Would “flashback” make sense here?

    For Gruul “Emblem: Whenever a creature deals damage to a player, put a +1/+1 counter on all creatures you control”.
    For Azorius, maybe “Emblem: Whenever a creature an opponent control’s attacks, it doesn’t untap during the opponent’s next untap step”.
    For Orzhov,
    “Emblem: Whenever your opponent taps land for mana, he loses one life. Whenever you tap land for mana, you gain one life” or something like Norn’s Annex. He needs to pay life or discard a card to cast spells or attack. Whenever a creature you control dies, your opponent must discard a card.

    Spitemare says that this is fine.

    Gravity Bomb black mana
    Sorcery {R}
    Kicker :9mana::symb:
    Target player loses 3 life. If Gravity Bomb was kicked, that player's life total becomes 1.

    I love the flavor. It just goes BOOM if you pay the kicker. Sweet card. Even though it's rare, I think it would be better if it was 2 damage. Or somehow change it so that the numbers 3,2, and 1 were portrayed.

    Check this out:
    Slayer of Emrakul WWUUBBRRGG
    Creature – Human Warrior
    Flying, Hexproof, Double Strike
    Whenever ~ attacks, target player sacrifices a creature with converted mana cost 9 or greater"

    For sure there are more than just 20 planeswalkers in the multiverse. What about an "In-Justice League"? A gang of rogue, selfish planeswalkers not exactly like the egotistic Nicol Bolas. I'd like to see a Good PW vs. Bad PW war kinda like WWII.

    I’ve come to realize recently that MTG is one of the most ingenious business models I have ever seen in my 18 years of being alive.
    The shenanigans that involve cracking booster packs is the key.
    In a set, there will be a group of cards that were meant to work well together. Let’s use Jund’s Devour mechanic for example. If you pulled a “Sprouting Thrinax” from your booster pack, the purpose of it seems unclear at first. Once you realize Jund’s Devour theme, it coerces you to build a deck around those cards. Let’s look at “Champion of the Parish”. It has potential if you run humans. The problem? Booster packs are allotted with 14 random cards from all different slices of the pie, with different archetypes. Half of those cards are also “limited fodder”. So when you realize that your Jund intro pack would get stronger with a few more Thrinaxes and the mythic Kresh, you open more booster packs. Too bad, there’s no such thing as a “Jund Booster pack” because you’ll end up with more cards than you need and some that don’t fit. It'll take many packs before you get your first Kresh. Then, what happens when you pull Sphinx of the Steel Wind? You don’t have an Esper deck, but pulling a few key Esper rares may convince you to build an Esper deck along with your current Jund deck. If you don’t restrain yourself, you’ll end up building the many decks that Wizards designed for the set. Assuming that you have all the purchasing power in the world, you have potential to spend hundreds of dollars opening boosters alone.
    Wizards however, does a great job of maintaining a platform to exchange cards so that buying product isn’t the only way to get the decks you want via the game store. This was before the Internet and now, trading can occur in the comfort of your home.

    I feel that Bloodlord's last ability replaces any other instance of bloodthirst on a vampire and gives it bloodthirst 3 and only bloodthirst 3. the wording is "gain". Creatures "gain" lifelink, first strike. Creatures "get" +3/+3.

    Having played Magic for 2 years now, I begin to notice that FNM isn’t for everyone. Protour players are what serious players care about while the casual players just get dumped onto the side. However, finding out what kind of Magic lifestyle fits you is very important. I started playing Magic by asking a veteran friend to give me his jank commons. Me and my other friend who bought an intro pack, then introduced the game to a few more players (one of whom quit a while back was brought back). We had a blast during our free periods playing against each other with casual decks until one of us decided to make a top tier competitive deck. At that time, the Type 2 consisted of Zendikar, M11 and Scars block. His blue-white Venser Control was filled with Spellskites, Tumble Magnets and Titans. It absolutely dominated our playgroup. Soon enough, everyone else in the group minus the veteran tried to catch up to this sudden rise in power. The mono-green player decided to add Garruk and Kazandu Tuskcaller. I upgraded to a G/B Infect build with Crusader and Inkmoth. The blue-black player decided to order some cards from Ravnica. We were still getting pig-penned by his control finesse. We were bad players and bad deck-builders, but aside from that, we were either too ignorant or too casual to make a strategic move against the King of the Hill.
    We graduated a few months afterwards and went our separate ways. No more playgroup. The Venser Control player now plays at every FNM and has played all the Top tier net decks. My friend and I occasionally go to the game store to say hi (cuz we know he’ll most likely be there) and buy some packs to help him score let’s say…Huntmaster or Tamiyo. Our Magic lifestyles are different. My casual buddy soon realized that making decks wasn’t worth the effort since we play approximately once a month. After we show off our shiny new decks, they’re left to gather dust in a drawer. I’ve even considered letting my friend have all the decks I’ve constructed in the past since he has a little brother to play with while I’m an only child. I honestly don’t seek out players in my school since most of them are pretty competitive so we’ve settled with playing Mini-masters, and buying U/C lots while polishing them with cheap rares with each landing of a set. The budget has definitely decreased, but we find this method the best fit for us. The moral? Find your best fit.

    Creatures you control have "tap:draw a card". Creatures your opponents control get +1/+1.

    Egg Shooter (4)B
    Creature - Horror
    Whenever ~ deals damage, put a 0/1 Yolk creature token with: "Sacrifice this creature: ~ deals 1 damage to you" onto the battlefield under an opponent's control. Yolks can't attack or block.
    Egg Shooter gets +1/+1 for every Yolk creature on the battlefield.
    4/4

    Archmages' Metamorph (4)
    Artifact creature - Construct
    If you control more lands than creatures, you may draw an additional card during your Draw Phase.
    If you control more creatures than lands, creatures you control have +1/+1.

    Loved ninjutsu. So here's my take on genjutsu and taijutsu:

    Genjutsu- Whenever a creature you control becomes a target of a spell or ability; you may pay this creature’s Genjutsu cost. If you do, return that creature back to your hand, and put this creature onto the battlefield as the new target for that spell or ability.

    Taijutsu- Whenever a creature you control attacks or blocks, you may pay this creature’s Taijutsu cost. If you do, reveal this creature from your hand, and the attacking or blocking creature gets +X/+Y where X and Y are this creature’s power and toughness.

  • posted a message on Who here stopped playing Constructed?
    Since this is casual magic, who here was once into constructing powerful decks, but now only plays Limited? I notice that because I don't attend FNM, and I don't have a consistent playgroup, at most, I get 5 plays per year with any deck I make so I think: "What's the point?" Why don't I just play limited for now? I know the decks will suck, but...the money to fun ratio doesn't match.

  • posted a message on Pure Mana
    When the multiverse was only a baby, its mana was the purest. Mana extracted from the land was more efficient and could easily cast spells deemed expensive today.

    Prehistoric Plains produces Pure-white mana or regular white mana. Prehistoric Island produces Pure-blue mana or regular blue mana. Prehistoric Swamp produces Pure-black mana or regular black mana. Prehistoric Mountain produces Pure-red mana or regular red mana. Prehistoric Forest produces Pure-green mana or regular green mana. You can have up to 12 total prehistoric lands in your deck at a time.

    Prehistoric creatures and spells cost Pure mana which can be paid by one Pure mana or one corresponding regular mana plus 1 mana however NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND. Therefore, Elvish Visionary cannot be paid by a source that produces one Pure-green mana.

    Pure-white mana: :symw::1mana:
    Pure-blue mana: :symu::1mana:
    Pure-black mana: :symb::1mana:
    Pure-red mana: :symr::1mana:
    Pure-green mana: :symg::1mana:

    Creature examples:
    Primeval Pyrosaur 4(pure-red)(pure-red)
    Creature - Dragon Dinosaur
    Flying
    :symtap::Your opponents' creatures can't block this turn.
    10/10
    The shockwaves it causes when it beats its wings can knock creatures off their feet.

    Notes: If you are not playing Pyrosaur with pure-red mana, it will cost you 6:symr::symr:. However, if you do control a source that produces pure-red mana, tapping for 2 pure-red mana can reduce the cost of pyrosaur to only 6 points of mana.

    An alternative of the Pure mana mechanic is to force players to use Pure mana to "awaken" prehistoric creatures to do their bidding.

    Ancient Archelon 4(pure-blue)(pure-green)
    Creature - Turtle Dinosaur
    Hexproof
    Ancient Archelon is unblockable.
    Ancient Archelon stays tapped as long as it's on the battlefield.
    (Pure-blue)(pure-green): Untap Ancient Archelon.
    8/8

    Other ways to encourage players to include Pure mana into their deck is to have creatures grow more powerful when they interact with pure mana in some way.

    Omega Elf 1:symg:
    Creature - Elf
    (Pure-green): Omega Elf gains double-strike until end of turn.
    :symtap::Add (pure-green) to your mana pool.
    1/1

    Cretaceous Raptor 1(pure-red)(pure-white)
    Creature - Bird
    Flying, First Strike
    Cretaceous Raptor loses Flying and First Strike if you don't control a Prehistoric Plains.
    4/4

    Nightshade (g) (b)(2)
    Enchantment
    All saprolings have infect and have (g)(b) sacrifice this creature: target creature gains infect until end of turn.
    All fungus have death touch and say "(g)(b) put a -1/-1 counter on this creature, target creature gain death touch until end of turn.

    (Alternative)Nightshade (g)(b)(2)
    Enchantment
    All saporlings and fungus gain infect and (b)(g) sacrifice this creature; target creature gains infect until end of turn.

    Creating a saproling and fungus tribal deck is already quite a challenge due to the lack of cards to support them. I would make the casting cost simply "GB" if the effects targeted saprolings and fungi. However, this enchantment looks fairly costed if the target creatures were other creature types that are more represented in the multiverse.

    Cursed Obelisk (8)
    Artifact Creature-Wall
    Cursed Obelisk has defender.
    Cursed Obelisk's toughness is equal to target opponent's life total. Whenever Cursed Obelisk is dealt damage, that opponent loses that much life.
