Squirrel Girl beat a living planet. Squirrel Girl can beat anyone and anything just because that is her thing; she's an exaggeration of plot armor given to a superhero.

and Doom is an exaggeration of a Rick Roll. You think you're clicking on a video of a cute bunny...nope! Rick Roll'd. You thought you killed Dr Doom, but nope! DoomBot'd.

It seems that Dr Doom's only REAL power is the art of deception. He deceives his enemies into thinking that they are fighting him when they are actually fighting a DoomBot and he deceives his fanboys into thinking he actually has any significant powers.

Actually, it is Doctor Doom. It's one of the few Doom defeats not to be retconned to be a DoomBot.

This is your "mighty" Doctor Doom? Who has Doctor Doom actually permanently defeated?

1 Deathrite shaman eats up graveyards, yet you play it with Tarmagoyf and Nimble Mongoose and other Deathrite Shamans. That's just plain wrong. The card is a lot like Grim Lavamancer, and almost every deck that runs Grim only runs 1-2 copies. You have GSZ to find him if his ability is actually going to be useful too.

You can control what you exile with Deathrite Shaman. Running Shaman with Nimble Mongoose and Tarmogoyf isn't wrong if you play correctly. Remember, you can exile cards from your OPPONENT'S graveyard, which doesn't affect your own Threshold.

    Quote from godofallu

3 GSZ should be a 4x or 0x, same with Hymn

I don't think that's true. Sometimes it's better to have an extra real copy of a threat in an aggro build, rather than an extra virtual one. GSZ can be Spell Pierced, but a Tarmogoyf cannot.

4 I would consider a 3rd color as a light splash. For example white gets you lingering souls. Add in Bitterblossum and Cabal Therapy and you have some epic sauce.

If we start splashing other colours, we just become weaker versions of other existing decks. The point of this thread is to concentrate on making a G/B deck work, not point out other decks that use the same colours. What you described might work better as a straight up W/B token deck, but that's not the strategy we're going for with this build.

    Quote from godofallu

5 Equipment is overpowered and run in most decks. Why not this one? Again white splash would get you SFM...

I don't think we need to run Equipment in this deck for it to work. We have efficiently costed beaters that don't need Equipment support to push through damage. Lots of decks don't run the SFM package and do quite well. I don't see the need to try to jam it in to every deck, especially those that aren't already running white.

Is one Loam enough? When I play Loam it is usually as a two of and the synergy with the rest of the deck does support 2 Loams

I think one is enough. Remember, it can end up being a dead card if you're forced to exile your own lands with the Deathrite Shaman. Tormod piloted the deck tonight, so he might have more to add about that.

    Quote from Fizzeler
Still think this deck is perfect for Garruk Relentless, against control he can just win you the game with 2/2s, puts a decent clock and Jace, and helps recover after Terminus, the fact that he kills SFM is nice as well

Garruk would be an interesting addition. Maybe in the sideboard to be brought in against Control builds? Tormod and I have talked about putting in Bloodghasts to be used with Cabal Therapy. Garruk's creature tutor has some synergy with Bloodghast and his ultimate ability uses the GY as well.

I may be sticking the wrong card in this deck (as I have yet to play it, but hey I love playing B/G decks), but Thrun, The Last Troll it is an uncounterable 4/4 that regenerates and has Hexproof, adding that you can cast him by turn 3

I think Tarmogoyf and Nimble Mongoose fit the deck better. Lighter mana cost and have synergy with the GY strategy. We are playing with Bobs, so we don't want our curve to get too high, even if we can play it out on Turn 3.

I piloted this deck to a Top 4 at a local Legacy tournament ($350 payout, so pretty good competition).

I played against Pox, UR Standstill, Show and Tell, RUG, and Burn (in the Semis).

    Tournament Report:
    Match 1: Pox (2-1 Win)

Game 1, I fight through some early discard and a Smallpox to establish a board presence and manage to finish him with a Nimble Mongoose and Bob. Game 2, he manages to lock me out with The Abyss and finishes me off with a Mishra's Factory. Game 3, is a grindy back and forth, but I manage to destroy his Liliana of the Veil with an Abrupt Decay and play my own, causing him to scoop.

Match 2: UR Standstill (2-1 Win)

Game 1, he counters pretty much everything I play, but I manage to hammer him down to 5 life. He wiped my board (can't remember how) and resolved JtMS to lock it up. Game 2 is a straight up beat down and I win easily on the back of a Tarmogoyf and Deathrite Shaman (along with a Pithing Needle on his Jace and Mishra's Factory). Game 3 is a back and forth affair, but Pithing Needle comes through again and I manage to pull it out with a Mongoose and Tarmogoyf.

Match 3: Show and Tell (2-0 Loss)

Game 1, he pulls off a turn 2 Show and Tell revealing Griselbrand. I must admit that I misplayed slightly. I should have revealed a Deathrite Shaman from Show and Tell and prayed to top a Maelstrom Pulse (which I did). Instead, I reveal a Bob hoping to draw some sort of answer. Game 2, he mulligans to 6 cards and I hit him with a Turn 1 Thoughtseize and Turn 2 Inquisition. Things are looking good, but when I hit him with a second Inquisition, he Brainstorms and I know he's hiding a Show and Tell for the win. He managed to draw out perfectly (his words, not mine) to play Show and Tell revealing Omniscience, then casting Griselbrand and Emrakul.

    Match 4: RUG (2-0 Win)

Game 1, he mulls to 5 and keeps a 1 lander. I have Bayou, Deathrite Shaman and double Wasteland in my opening hand and manage to lock him out of the game. Game 2, he manages to flip a Delver early, but I play a Scryb Ranger and push through some incremental damage. He plays a second Delver and then has a bit of a brainfart and Brainstormed in an attempt to Force of Will an Abrupt Decay I played on his flipped Delver. He tilts BADLY and decides to go let it become a slugfest trading shots, but I have the bigger Tarmogoyf and Mongeese. Eventually, I take him out while sitting at 4 life.

Match 5 (Semifinals): Burn (2-0 Loss)

Game 1, outraces me and burns me out. Game 2, I make a MASSIVE sideboarding error and leave Thoughtseize and Bob in (what a scrub!). I die Game 2 with both in my hand. Slant

Overall, I think it's a really fun deck to play. You have a very high threat count, so it's hard for opponents to stop everything you throw at them (unless you overextend into a boardwipe). Deathrite Shaman is crazy good. Getting Wastelanded isn't such a big deal when he's on the table. He can push damage through when things get grindy and people seem to hate wasting removal on him. I played with 3, but 4 might be correct. I played with a different Sideboard than what Tormod listed and his is much better.

If you don't take casting costs and equip costs into consideration, yes Swords are strictly better. However, think about how the Humans deck wins games. You want to push as much damage as you can through as quickly as possible. The absolute earliest you can cast and a Sword is turn 3 and equipping turn 4, committing almost all your resources in the process. Avacyn's Collar can be played on turn 2 along with another 1 drop and be equipped on turn 3 with yet another 1 drop. If you want to equip your Geist with a Sword, you're looking at turn 5 at the earliest. At that point, if your deck is playing out as it should, it becomes a bit of a win-more play. Don't confuse Humans for a mid-range deck. The longer the game goes, the worse it gets.

Also, Vigilence is more relevant than you think. Ever played against Intangible Virtue? Vigilence can be a royal pain.

I say give the Collar a whirl and see how you like it. I don't think I'd run it as a 4 of, but 1 or 2 could be interesting. I'm currently trying out 1 with a Sylvok Lifestaff.

The Ice Cage will be destroyed as soon as you target the creature with Mind Control. It's like when you target an illusion with a spell. It doesn't have to resolve.

Summer Magic was only printed in English. It used the old tap symbol (tilted T, instead of the arrow) and has a 1994 copyright date by the artist's name. You can tell the difference between 4th Edition and Summer Magic because they switched to the arrow tap symbol for 4th. Also, the font for the date in Summer Magic cards was larger than that which you see in 4th edition cards.

  • posted a message on Mana stacking a deck in tournaments.
I'm basing my understanding of the rule off the commentary of the event this past weekend. I think it was Brian Kibler who said that cutting an opponent's deck was made a requirement for the reasons mentioned above. Unless I mis-understood what he meant or that he misspoke and meant shuffling was made a requirement, to my understanding, that means cutting an opponent's deck following their shuffle should be sufficient. If I'm mistaken, I will stand corrected. However, any time I played at a competitive rel event, shuffling an opponent's deck has never been an issue.

Really, I think I might have drawn the thread off topic by saying what I did. The point is that, yes, you are allowed to shuffle your opponents library if you feel their deck isn't sufficiently randomized. I just thought it was convenient that it was talked about recently at a high level event.

When it says that you are required to shuffle your opponent's library, it doesn't mean you have to do a full shuffle. A simple cut will suffice. It was actually talked about during the coverage of the SCG event this past weekend. The rule was apparently introduced because Japanese players considered it an insult to their opponent to shuffle/cut their opponent's library because it implied that they didn't trust them. People realized and took advantage of this by stacking their deck.

    Hi all,

I just have a question about altered art. Does the text box have to be visible for it to be legal? I'm looking into buying a playset of Savannahs from someone and one of them has been altered. I have attached a picture of the cards.

    Thanks for your input!

You can use it on your opponent's Deceiver Exarch to give it pro-red so the Splinter Twin fizzles. You can also use it to protect your Hero of Bladehold from Dismember

I actually like Norn's Annex. It's an artifact, so it powers Metalcraft and will definitely hurt Splinter Twin decks as none of the builds run white. Suture Priest is a 2 drop, but realistically, you can get out Norn's Annex on turn 3 with a combination of Myr mana and Phyrexian mana.
