Thanks for all the advice guys, I've read it over and I'll read it over a few more times to make sure I understand it all.
Here's the pool I got and the deck I made from it for the 1st RTR sealed event I did. I don't have the 2nd pool or deck because a friend payed my way in if he got to keep all the cards.
Do you guys see anything I should of done differently? I think I should of looked at white more than red. I also feel like I was trying to be an aggro deck without a mass amount of creatures and a control deck with no late game at the same time.
Hello, I played in RTR sealed events yesterday (Game Day), and last Sunday (Prerelease). Both times I get 2-3, and on the prerelease my only two wins were because my opponents didn't show up....
I feel that I made the correct decisions every time aside from forgetting to tap a Lobber Crew end of turn one time, but it didn't make a difference in who won or lost. Its just that they had a better deck than I did.
I'm good at constructed (due to net-decking), when I was playing Wolf Run Ramp at FNMs I would almost always top 8 out of 30 - 40+ people. When I did miss-play I would almost instantly notice it and remember not to do that again. When I would try and make my own deck for FNMs I would do 1-4, and 2-3 consistently, not ideal obviously when 3-1-1 or better is needed to make top 8 (usually).
With all this said I think my main problem is deck creation even in limited events. So do you guys have any advice or articles I should read to help me? Maybe some limited tips? Or anything that can help me not be forced to net deck to do well in constructed events? I don't really mind net decking, I would just like to be a good deck builder as well, mainly for limited events where I have to build a deck. I'm entering in a RTR sealed PTQ in November, and I do not want to scrub out like I have in these sealed events....
Does anyone know the point of the interview with Max McCall on the Live Stream? I've been waiting for some games to start, but instead I've been "learning" about MAX TIMMY and MAX SIDEBOARD instead.

Mill wont be a viable plan A unless you take the roll of a control deck and mill them late game. This is because mill isn't fast enough to compete with any aggro deck. 20 is a lot lower than 60. Even then there are a lot of decks that gain stuff from being milled, for example:
Frites (That's their plan A)
Zombies (Not that big of a deal, but giving them Gravecrawlers is annoying)
Control Decks (Gives them Snapcaster targets and Lingering Souls)
Delver (Gives them a lot Snapcaster targets)
Plus it isn't that effective against decks with a lot of flashback cards, basically giving them card advantage.
Hello everyone, I've been testing most of the popular decks and I have narrowed down three that I would like to play:
Affinity
Splinter Twin
Storm
I'm wanting to get these for future PTQs / GPs in my area. Which is more consistently better?
I like Affinity because I like aggro decks, and it did just win a GP.
I like Storm, mainly because I would be transforming my deck into Twin on games 2 and 3 to get them to miss-sideboard and have some dead cards.
I like twin the least out of these three, but I know how to play it and know it has done well in the past (maybe not recently though, has its time come and gone?)
- After that resolved he drew an extra card and the judge called him on it. After counting all of his cards it showed that he did draw an extra card, and he got a game loss loosing the match.
Wouldn't he draw a card off of Clique? Or did he draw an extra card after that.
After more testing I've decided to replace Chord with Ball Lightning, cascading into it is very powerful.
I'm not going to be removing Hellrider, I've won a few games with it and it is usually a 6/3 or 7/3 haste (for 2RR) when including the damage it deals.
I've added back all of the mana dorks and replaced huntmaster with chord of calling. So the mana dorks wont just sit there a lot of the time. I've been annoyed with huntmaster not having haste lately, it feels like it is slowing me down when I could be searching for another haste creature to get some damage in instantly. What do you guys think about the changes?
Also, how would you guys do the mana base? I've been feeling pretty good about it lately, I've usually been able to cast everything easily.
I don't feel G/R aggro in Modern needs 8 mana dorks. It is not the standard version which prides itself on getting a sword out on T2 and swinging with birds on T3. So I would cut them out for some more reach like Rift Bolt or Lava Spike. You could also replace the dorks with Boggart Ram-Gang.
Also you should add in 6-8 fetches. Grove of the Burn Willows was for the punishing fire combo. You can take them out as it is now banned.
I've been testing this list on cockatrice and winning most of my matches. I think it may be a little weak to combo so a lot of SB hate against combo will be needed. Also it might need some more removal, just bolt might not cut it against most decks.
I tried to make the mana base as stable as possible and to be able to produce any number of G or R mana. I do have a lot of colors in my creatures.
The goal of the deck is like most decks, to race your opponent and keep pressure on them. With bloodbraid elf being a two for one, and bolts giving us phoenix back, it is easy to do that.
What do you guys think? I think this deck can do well against most of the field if it was tweaked a little bit.
Why not play "real" paper magic, and when you get the urge for magic at home, just use Cockatrice.
It's alot cheaper (It's 100% free), and imo, provides just as good an environment as MTGO. You can also Draft in it and everything else you can do in online.
You also get to have fun with your friends in a variety of ways. Me and a friend of mine were on Skype and challenged each other to speed-deck-build within the Modern game. It had to be theme decks, or have a certain gimmick or had to be combo etc. and one could not look up cards on the net.
Stuff like that is pretty cool online (on Cockatrice) but not available anywhere else.
Cockatrice doesn't have PTQs.
MTGO doesn't have people who hardly know the rules.
So huntmaster and scars duals are out for reasons besides budget? I 100 percent believe that all of that nonsense about why the scars duals are bad and why huntmaster tested poorly for you are totally unbiased by budget constraints...:rolleyes:
My tip is you should take this to the budget forum so you dont have to jump through hoops trying to justify poor decisions.
Its better to play an optimal deck that isn't as powerful then it is to play a bad jank version of a high tier list. Maybe look into Wolf Run green or something.
I've has multiple chances to buy the lands and I turned them down. I wouldn't run them if I had them because of what I've stated in this thread. And in the tournament I almost always (except for two times, which I didn't even have slagstorm so it didn't matter) had 3 red after a turn two ramp. Yes, I was keeping track.
However it is true that I can't afford Huntmaster right now, but I wouldn't run them even if I could afford them.
If I wanted to run these cards and didn't have enough money I would just say so, there's no reason why I wouldn't...
Anyways, I did do kind of poorly starting off with 0-2 against zombies two times in a row, (was 1 turn away from winning in both matches -____-) then easily won against B/W tokens. After that I played against a delver deck who had the nut draw both games so I just died. Then I won a few against a few Pod and Naya aggro decks. Then lost my final game in a close race against delver.
So I will agree with you that I should run a cheaper deck in the future so I can afford things like CoS and other cards I really should be running to make a deck a good deck.
Thanks for your guys' posts, I learned a few things from this thread and the tournament. Hopefully I'll do better in the future.
Only one person has mentioned Predator Ooze? With trample (Rancor) it is amazing and very hard to stop. The only problem is it is a little slower than your other creatures.

Is G/R Tron still viable? I hardly see anyone play it in GPs but it looks like my type of deck.
"Robots" is lame, call it what people know it by: "Affinity".

- He drew for his turn.
- During his draw step his opponent casted Vendilion Clique
- After that resolved he drew an extra card and the judge called him on it. After counting all of his cards it showed that he did draw an extra card, and he got a game loss loosing the match.
Wouldn't he draw a card off of Clique? Or did he draw an extra card after that.
I'm just wondering what happened exactly.
