Anyone playing it very much this time around? I was disappointed when I heard they had changed it again and it wasn't powered this time, but I played the previous un-powered MTGO Cubes and did fairly well, so I wasn't too worried. However, I have absolutely no grasp of how to draft a winning Cube deck this time around. I think I have lost at least 50 points from my rating, which was hovering in the mid 1700's prior to this Cube week. Anyways, is anyone having much success and if so what is the main reason for your success?
Just wanted to get some feedback on something with you guys, but is it just me or is there often a clear lack of signalling in swiss queues vs. the other queues? I have played a fair amount of all 3 of the different queues and I seem to get frustrated much more regularly when drafting in the swiss queues. I feel the gameplay and skill level on average is pretty much the same regardless of queues, despite what many of you on here might think (i.e., 8-4s being the best), but the difference is in the drafting style, IMO. Is it just a function of people drafting a little bit more loosely in swiss because it's more casual and no matter what happens you will get to play 3 matches? That's my theory, anyway.
Thanks for all of the great replies in this thread. I realize now that it is definitely a much more prevalent issue when playing against Selesnya or any deck running G/W lands, but I also feel that those two colors (especially white) are almost always severely overdrafted, so that explains why I see so many combat tricks. Dispel is definitely a fantastic card in this format and I am starting to value it much higher when I'm in blue, which is quite often. Last night I ran 2 Dispels out of the sideboard and it was essentially the main reason I won two of three matches. It effectively shuts down what seems to be the most common archetype. I realize you can't play around all of the tricks so I guess it's just a matter of being able to think through the opponents potential plays based on mana open and knowledge of cards in the format, something I need to get batter at.
I draft exclusively online, so this trend may not be apparent in the paper arenas, but does anyone else feel that there are just way too many combat tricks in this format? How do you play around all of them?
I hardly ever play in sealed events, but I draft A LOT, so can anyone give a breakdown of the differences with sealed vs draft? I always see comments that say card X is bad in draft but good in sealed, but it's never clear why this is. Is sealed generally slower? Is it because draft decks are usually more focused and consistent (if drafted properly)? Also, why is 4-booster sealed so popular on MTGO?
I try to avoid Rakdos if I can, but that's only because it's my least favorite guild. I have gone "infinite" since paying for 1 pre-release draft and 1 pre-release sealed online and have had the most success with Grixis decks. Last night I drafted a pretty sweet W/U/R deck. So yeah, Rakdos is good but it isn't always the deck that wins.
Drafted a Worldspine Worm P1P1 last night just to play with it and see if I could make it work. Ended up going 2-1 and cast the Worm in every match at least once. It ended the game each time with the exception of M3G2 because my opponent used a Traiterous Instinct on it the very next turn =(. I doubt I'll first pick it again, but if I get a bunch of acceleration again and see it in pack 3 then I'll probably run it.

That's funny because I was wondering why everyone was talking about drafting once a week. Then I realized that there are magic players who have not discovered Magic Online. I haven't drafted m13 250 times but I bet I have done it 40 or 50. I am one of the few people who actually likes AVR draft. I think it is interesting to try to build decks out of unplayable cards lol.
I personally dislike m13. I can't really qualify it other than to say that there aren't really any interesting decks to build. I think my favorite might be the tokens/ trumpet blast strategy. I guess I feel like every draft of m13 goes almost exactly the same.

My favorite M13 colors are Green and Blue, but I think I have won drafts with every color as my main.
I think green is good when you pair it with a removal color. a strategy I like is to pick every 2-drop you can get your hands on and draft RG aggro. mogg flunkies into flinthoof boar is hard to beat.

M13 is one of my favorite sets to draft. Granted, only been drafting since SOM released but I think this particular core set has a lot of possible color combos and archetypes that can get it done.
Edit: Reason I was asking is because I debated playing some of the black cards listed, but I felt like the blue alone was strong enough to support the mill strategy. The deck went 2-1 and lost in the finals to a pretty fast R/B deck IIRC, but all the games were very close. Still, was a very fun deck for me, but not my opponents.
Thanks for the feedback guys. I mentioned in my post that in the 2nd draft my P1P1 was a misclick and I randomly picked a card, just happened to be Tricks of the Trade. That draft overall was a trainwreck because I was quite annoyed with the misclick and let it ruin my draft. The 3 x Bloodhunter Bats were quite a beating though and the only reason why I won the first match. It also helped that I topdecked an Essence Drain for the win in game 3 when I literally had 1 turn left before I was finished.
I don't get the hate for the Warclamp Mastiff though. Sure it's not great, but what is wrong with them in an aggressive deck that has a few exalted creatures? I sided in Arms Dealer for every game and would take out one of the Rain of Blades or the War Falcon.

My P1P1 was an accidental click. I was playing with some settings right when the draft started.. Anyway, I won the first match against a mirror and then dropped the even because I didn't enjoy the deck a whole lot and wanted to go drink some beers.
The format is pretty bad - I doubt I'll ever play it again.

Yup. I have only been drafting online since triple NPH and it seems like a lot of people just force aggro decks, which IMO takes a lot less skill to win than any other archetype. I'll admit that I too have drafted many aggro decks and have had great success with them, but it's not my preferred archetype. I would really like to see a much slower format than what we have seen with the last few sets. I don't know how many times I have lost because I miss an early land drop or two while my opponent throws down 5 cheap beaters.

Yup. I have only been drafting online since triple NPH and it seems like a lot of people just force aggro decks, which IMO takes a lot less skill to win than any other archetype. I'll admit that I too have drafted many aggro decks and have had great success with them, but it's not my preferred archetype. I would really like to see a much slower format than what we have seen with the last few sets. I don't know how many times I have lost because I miss an early land drop or two while my opponent throws down 5 cheap beaters.
