Hoarding metal missteps....I now have 30 coasters

Same here. I have a few different cards that I've hoarded, including mental misstep, that have become banned. The worst thing about the missteps is their rarity. It is difficult to even trade them away because they are uncommon and stores won't buy them anymore.

Mindshrieker. This card has so much potential and should be more than a $3 rare. It has low converted mana cost, combined with the fact that it could be a huge swinger. The ability can be done multiple times and in the right deck it can be a finisher.

It's up to $20 and is now beating Doubling Season under most respects. The casual crowd definitely loves vamps if this is the case. No other formats are bringing up the price?

I think that they're interesting, but DFCs are going to bother me to some extent. I will be playing with them, but I haven't quite decided yet if I'm going to use checklist cards or opaque sleeves. I wish that there would have been a solution for them that didn't change the card backs *I would've been happier with two separate cards for each DFC- even if it meant I'd have to buy both cards to play it* I'm okay with playing the cards, but it definitely bothers me a little. Hopefully this is the only block that includes DFCs.

Snapcaster Mage is amazing! Can't wait to buy a few playsets if I can find him for decent preorder prices.

I don't see any reason why it can't fetch necropotence. It says enchantment card, not aura in the text. The only mention of auras is within the additional rulings section and I believe that's just a clarification on aura use alone, but not the abilities of the card as a whole.

  • posted a message on When did speculation become so ingrained in magic?
I think mainly for me it began when I realized that prices of singles jump so radically after the first few weeks. I don't speculate to make money, I speculate to complete my collection(s) and decks. Sometimes I need 8 - 12 copies of a card to put into several decks and/or sideboards without worrying about switching them out frequently. If a $2 card goes up to $5- it makes a big difference to me. I will buy less of the card as the price rises. After I learned that these price trends happen: I started preordering the singles that I have a strong feeling about. I don't speculate over $15 and I'm more likely to buy those singles three months after the set comes out.

  • posted a message on Why are Griffins overcosted?
I actually saw someone build a griffin deck a few weeks ago. He was thrilled that they were printing enough griffins so that he could finally have a "real" tribal deck. I didn't have the heart to tell him that it was terrible. I think he figured it out when it couldn't win any matches.

When is Wizards going to actually print playable griffins?

  • posted a message on What is your definition of Casual Magic?
Casual Magic for my group is similar to Vintage/Legacy. In Casual, anything goes because there is no banned/restricted list. I don't play FNM or any tournaments because 1) I don't have time. I work full time, go to college and have a family. 2) I don't like the environment of any of the nearby LGS. They aren't very accepting of new players or women.

A lot of times I hear people on here say, "Oh that'd be fine for casual." Maybe someone else's casual table. The only time that we play fun casual is when we play tribal, but even then each deck is filled with cards that are versatile and powerful. There are no vanilla creatures played, no vorthos creatures, and I don't think I have a cheap casual deck. I'm not so serious about it that I say that people can't have fun with casual magic, but it's definitely not coming from my deck. I usually get around this by playing with someone else's deck if they want to have "fun" and not play competitive casual.

More or less, I have Legacy Staples, Standard Staples, and Modern Staples all for casual. I have a binder for each and build my decks using them. Sadly I think that I'm one of the only people that orders between three booster boxes to a case every time a new set comes out that doesn't play standard. I complete the set in my binder and buy playsets of the cards I want to deck build with. That is my definition of casual play: using the largest cardpool available with absolutely no restrictions (no banlists because it's not a format!) other than the official rules.

I'm not sure if this has been said already, but if you had ten forests in casual and wanted to play Wood Elemental... you'd have to spend four mana and sac six lands just to make it a 6/6. For the rest of the game you'd be behind on lands and chances are that a 6/6 wood elemental wouldn't win you the game.

Also, I think that the only reason it is $2 is because is it often stated to be the worst card in the game's history. It must get some attention for that fact alone. You have to pay four mana for a 0/0 and then sac untapped forests to make it have any P/T at all.

Too bad I work the overnight tonight. I'll catch what I can before work. Then I'll be getting back on here at 6am. I wish this wasn't my overnight month when it's spoiler season.

  • posted a message on What is the point in certain common cards?
Some of the older cards that you can compare these "awful" cards to were mistakes or would not be able to be used in the current standard. I would love a counterspell reprint, but that would make blue too powerful. The same goes for Hymn to Tourach & Dark Ritual for black. The only way they will be printed now would be with strictly worse cards to balance out the color pie.

Also, anything in Planar Chaos should have no impact on how you gauge the value of other cards. Planar Chaos allowed R&D to step completely out of the color pie and give the colors powerful abilities previously only know to other colors. Dash Hopes & Mana Tithe are great examples of these.

  • posted a message on Which language is worth the least?
From my experience: Spanish, English, and Italian are the lowest valued. Italian is mainly from the surplus Legends print run. English is due to our high print runs of everything and I believe Spanish is low due to aesthetic reasons.

  • posted a message on Are any of these boxes worth picking up?
I would crack the onslaught for the fetches, but it's still a gamble. Foreign masques and apocalypse are the most appealing to me. Those you can actually flip for profit and open and probably profit as well.

Good luck in whatever you decide.

  • posted a message on Booster Box Prices
I always go to CoolStuffInc for my preorders. They have a reward system that accumulates and free shipping over $100. I usually buy multiple booster boxes for each set, so getting from 89.99 to $100 is no problem. For New Phyrexia I decided I wanted another box at the last minute, so I added a few singles to my cart to get it up to the $100. At this point my discount has accumulated enough so that I can get over $5 off an LED and I even get money off of the sealed goods and supplies that I buy as well.

They always honor their preorders and ship super fast through Fedex (the free shipping I mentioned earlier). Even though they are in Florida and I'm in MI, I always get my purchases within 3 days from them.
