• posted a message on My brother's girlfriend is....
I really feel like this thread really begs the question of why you went to sit down next to your brother's girlfriend? If I were trying to learn how to play a new game with my girlfriend, and some girl I don't know that well sits down next to me to try to help, I would be kind of upset too. Having someone tell you what to do is a terrible way to learn to play a game -- especially if trying to play with a sig. other.

Sorry, but I think that you're really at fault here... She probably wanted some alone time w/ her boyfriend.

• posted a message on How much do you spend in food/month
If you just want to save money, eat rice. You can buy a huge bag of rice that will probably last you a year for 15 bucks. A cheap rice cooker is 13 bucks at wal mart. I can eat rice plain, but you might need to spend 3 dollars a month on soy sauce (I can't really eat all the sodium anyway).

If you want to eat cheaply, look into chinese cuisine. Also, DON'T eat out. Even if you eat very little, you will still end up spending way more than you need to (a meal of rice + sauce is easily less than 50 cents).

• posted a message on Grimgrin EDH, How would you build it?
If I were going to build a Grimgrin deck, I would probably play voltron style with as many awesome equipments as I could find (especially those granting vigilance -- Accorder's Shield, just because I like playing cards that don't have a use anywhere else! Batterskull, sword of vengeance...). Effects that temporarily steal opponent's creatures are also nice (Helm of Possession comes to mind). I would also put in protective equipment/enchantments (Diplomatic Immunity, Darksteel Plate, Lightning Greaves, Swiftfoot Boots, etc.)

After that I would probably go Zombie Tribal. I think the funnest thing is the vigilance, though. Surprised no one brought it up yet....

Should this topic be moved to magic general or something? I feel like it has started to deviate more into the morality of collusion than anything else.

Anyway, I have some questions regarding a somewhat similar issue... A couple of times in FNM's/Prereleases/whatever I have gotten a call from gf or parents or whatever and had to leave in the middle of/at the end of the round. I generally don't really care about the prizes or DCI ranking, so I just let my opponent report the match as 2-0 him, even if I am winning/already won. To me this seems more like "not being a jerk" than something like collusion. I figure that me dropping will already ruin his breakers, so why make his win/loss worse?

• posted a message on Which Cards Were Better/Worse Than Expected?
I ended up going 5-1 basically ONLY because I had 2x Spare from Evil. I originally only had 1 maindeck because I was afraid that it would be a dead card if there were too many humans around, but it never was! In fact, it was always a complete BLOWOUT. The low two mana cost gives you an INSANE tempo boost in an aggressive red/white deck. This should probably have been only a single creature, or at least "all white creatures you control" like brave the elements, or "all human creatures you control". If you and your opponent both stalemate, and you bait your opponent into attacking by holding back a creature or two (bluff land draws), this can absolutely win a game by itself.

Another big winner was Fiend Hunter. Get rid of one of their early guys to get in some beats and put your opponent on a clock. If you're playing control, buy yourself a lot of time.

Village Bell-Ringer is an awesome combat trick that can also lead to some awesome blowouts. Tap out your fatty with 3 mana open, and watch your opponent try to race you and lose 1-2 creatures.

The white removal instants were kind of MEH, as I expected. They're too much mana to be much good in this fast of a format. The one that only does 4 power or greater creatures is pretty horrible. I would never include it as more than a 1-of. The attacking creature one is much better, though.

• posted a message on Rules change for double-faced cards in a draft
Prediction:
Soon DFC in a draft will become derived information, and in REL events (FNM) players will be able to look through your pile at any time to see if there are any DFC cards.

Argh! Was seriously looking forward to this set. The DFC cards seem like such a useless idea. Half of them either can't transform back, or there's little benefit to doing so. A bunch of them are vanilla, too... ARGH!

They should have just keyworded the werewolf transform text and just not printed the reminder text on rares to make more space for text.

Oh come on, if they were both females we would not even be talking about this.

Did you even bother to read the "Although, on the other hand..." clause in my post before posting this? Slant

Anyway, in case I wasn't clear enough in my other post, TLDR:
I dislike this art, but am glad it was included for flavor reasons

The fact that they made some fanservice to females et al really doesn't bother me. What really bothers me about this art is that it looks BDSM to a really disturbing degree.

Although, on the other hand... A big part of horror is creating controversy and getting negative emotional reactions. This seems to me like a big theme that they've got going on in the set underneath all the individual cards. They're taking a little bit more license doing controversial things. In addition to this, they've done:

1.) Double-faced cards
2.) Human tribal (I would honestly not be surprised to see "sacrifice a human" in this block at some point) (MaRo explains human tribal controversy
3.) Top-down design (MaRo says this is the first set he has designed a top-down block
4.) Enchant Player (OK, so they've been done before, but they've never gotten this much focus and is still a bit controversial in my opinion)

These are all things that have never been done (mostly because they knew they would be controversial); and yet somehow they all happened in the same set . I think we can expect a lot more controversial things to come out of this set.

Does every card have to be standard playable? As someone pointed out, only a few cards ever get used as centerpieces in constructed decks, anyway...

I really love this set so far... this card is BONKERS in my Teysa EDH deck, not to mention the 3+ other cards already spoiled that I have already picked out cards to replace for Grin

• posted a message on Existential Depression
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Buddhism yet. You don't have to believe in any kind of god or supernatural power to take some fulfillment out of Buddhism.

Buddhism holds that suffering is caused by craving (the second of the "Four Noble Truths"). It sounds like you are craving eternal life, and that is what is depressing you. "Impermanence" is one of the "three marks of existence" that is specifically mentioned as a possible source of suffering (wishing things could stay the same).

The only way to avoid this craving is to learn to embrace the fluid nature of all things, and take joy in it. You seem to feel that because you will die, nothing you do in this life is of any consequence. However, let's consider that you are immortal and will live forever. Time no longer has any meaning to you. Now consider that someone you care very deeply about has a problem and needs your help. You spend an entire day helping him/her with his/her problem. Since you have no concept of time, action costs you nothing. Now consider that you have a finite lifetime. You have spent an entire day of your limited lifespan in order to help your loved one. Now the action is a selfless act of love and devotion because of the sacrifice you had to make.

In short, the things we do in our lifetimes have meaning only because our lifetimes are limited. The fact that we chose to do one thing at any given time implicitly precludes us from doing anything else at that time.

There's plenty of other stuff in Buddhism, but this seemed most relevant to your dilemma. Hope it helps.

• posted a message on Ever come across a cheater in draft?
Yeah, sometimes really crazy things just happen. At our New Phyrexia prerelease sealed event, somebody pulled 3 swords and a planeswalker (forget exactly which one) from his pool of 6 packs. Everyone was watching him open the packs, so it was pretty much impossible for him to cheat. Needless to say, he took first and won like 20 packs Tongue

If someone was going to cheat by slipping an uncommon or two into their deck, it wouldn't be elixir of immortality... just saying.

I would recommend getting a rice cooker. Rice + sauce is one the cheapest and easiest things you can eat. Plus, if you vary the type of sauce/meat you eat with it, it can be a completely different meal Smile

I like to get chicken nuggets and sausage patties and wal-mart to cut into pieces to eat with my rice. Wal-mart has a few good sauces you can get, but if you have an asian grocery store nearby, that would be better.

• posted a message on tribes/themes/mechanics expanding beyond their block
I would like to see wither as an evergreen mechanic to represent creatures that are poisonous. Wither isn't at all parasitic, and is very useful when chump blocking.

I put priests of norn in a lot of white decks, just because he's so good at blocking.
