The real problem with this discussion is that it really comes from two mutually exclusive viewpoints.
One group sees Magic as a game with rules. A logical challenge and entertaining competition for friends to enjoy. Much like I might play a game of chess with a friend and still have both of us have fun despite the challenging nature of the game. You can chat and have interesting conversations at the same time, but you are still competing no matter how friendly and casual that competition is.
The other group uses Magic literally just as an excuse to hang out. They are more or less throwing cards on the table just so they have something to do with their hands while they talk. They'll never give you a clear set of deck design restraints because the very idea of trying to win the game is a foreign concept.

I'll tell you how it ends. We're still playing our first game of MTG from January 1993. -

izzetmage posted a message on What is the appeal for infinite combos?I'm guessing you don't play competitively, so you will not understand.Posted in: Magic General
Firstly, all competitive games are 1v1. If you scoop, that's it. You lose the game and your opponent wins. There is no playing for second - you are second.
Secondly, the only thing that matters in competitive play is winning. Fun is secondary. In a tournament there are absolutely no rules against playing unfun decks. If the cards are legal in that format, you can play it. If an infinite combo deck wins lots of games, hell yeah, you bet people will play it, even if it's "boring" or the combo player has to go through the motions every single time.
Thirdly, I'm guessing that you have not been introduced into the wonderful world of discard and counterspells. These two things are pretty good at stopping combos in general, and can be maindecked. Then again, I wouldn't be surprised if your playgroup also bans counterspells or if Thoughtseize was out of their budget.
^edit: just see the underlined portion if you want to know why people choose to play infinite combos.
I was thinking of pre-Theros Thoughtseize, in case I was misunderstood. -

Hackworth posted a message on Is the left engaging in salami tactics? And what should we do about it?I think we should start a drinking game based around Swazi's posts. These will be the first three rules:Posted in: Debate
1) Take a drink if he mentions "liberal media".
2) Take a drink if he compares american politicians with commies or nazis without good justification.
3) Drain your vessel if he crossposts to seven or more forums.
More seriously, people accuse the right-wing of prosecuting a war on women because of **** like this, and also like this.
Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to find some beers. -

This brings up another question, however, a question of whether or not this is a left-wing strategy to divide-and-conquer the Republican Party. I'm sure you've all heard the expression that "first they came for X, and I didn't do anything because I'm not X, then they came for me, and nobody was left to stand up for me," well it's the same sort of thing.
The Democrats and liberals of the United States aren't rounding up Republicans and conservatives and sticking them in concentration camps.
I find it sickening that you would equate the two. -

I do. I am 100% supportive of LGBT rights.

Hackworth posted a message on Should we ban American football?Posted in: Debate
Everything that gets Swazi mad appears to be related to liberals, even when it isn't.Quote from Maverick827
Do you have any documentation to prove that this is a "liberal" movement? If so, please provide them.Quote from Swazi SpringThere have been a lot of calls by liberals to ban American football lately. Some advocate a complete and total ban on the sport, whereas others are only advocating for banning it in high schools and colleges (for now). The reason for these proposed liberal bans is supposedly because the sport is "too dangerous" and that people are incapable of making decisions for themselves, so the government has to make decisions for them. - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
