I am leaning towards the GB build. Mostly because I enjoy shaman of the pack. From what I see the main deck hasn't changed much at all other then the addition of Blooming Marsh. I am lost on what to really side board. I am not sure how the meta is in my area any longer. I was looking at @Syreal94's list that was posted a few pages back and it looks pretty solid. From not playing for so long what is Nissa for in the board? I also assume you are siding in Lead the Stampede in during matches where we need more attrition over single targets. I also see there isn't much graveyard hate in a lot of list? or single target removal for decks like Eldrazi or infect? Do we not need it anymore in this build? Sideboarding will probably be my weakest link from not being familiar with the matches as I use to.

Lead as you've said before, comes in where attrition is valued more than speed. Nissa, Vital Force is a relatively new (but overperforming) card that I stole from VIPOwl. Card comes in the attrition matchups, and the matchups where they can't deal with walkers too well (DnT,8 rack,Bant Eldrazi etc etc). We crush Bant Eldrazi and Eldrazi Tron is likely in our favour also (***but I need more data to make this assertion***, just going off feel). Infect has basically died as a deck, at least all the pilots on it in Sydney sold out straight away.

I'm of the opinion Graveyard hate is not relevant. We get crushed by every graveyard deck, and it doesn't get any better post board. The amount of cards we'd need to commit to make the matchups salvagable are better committed to other matchups.

Thanks. I just started to use Nissa in my Maverick build for legacy and she just wrecks some match ups. Did not even think of using her in Modern due to her high mana cost.

I will post my list that I currently have when I have a moment at work today to recall it.

Any reason not to run an Azban list? The white creatures in the board seem pretty strong. Depending on the manabase, I know I use to have issues with consistently getting the colors I need.

    Afternoon,

I read this forum quite often, but I tend to play more legacy/vintage then modern as of late. I am returning back into playing more modern and this was/is still my favorite modern deck to play. Minus oddball cards. I have the majority of the cards to play either GB/GW/GWB versions of the deck. Considering I haven't really played modern in about 6 months or more, I am not sure which version of the deck I should go with. I am going to playing in two local Modern events this weekend. From looking at recent tournaments it seems that both versions of the deck are doing well.

Sideboarding will probably be my weakest link from not being familiar with the matches as I use to.

The majority of GWish builds I have seen and played have been pretty much similar builds but with more of a silverbullet sideboard plans. When I last played I had a gw build together. I did pretty well with it, but missed having Shaman of the Pack. Any suggestions or thoughts that would be great.

    Thanks in advance!

I also didn't realize there was a discord group. I joined the group and can chat there as well!

@HorseshoeCrab sounds good. Send me a private message later!

I have also tried all three of your options before for affinity. They all work great, but with this event getting closer to 3000 I am not sure about using them. I really do not want to just have them when other cards would be more versatile. Kataki's great if you get him out really early, but its a card we side in for just this matchup. Stony silence can be at least used for other match ups. Creeping corrosion falls into the same way as kataki. It is really only good against affinity. If affinity was going to be about 15%+ of the meta I would be all in for any of these cards. I am quite happy with how the sb was working for me against them.

Sorry was a busy day yesterday with working from home.

I probably ended up keeping the sigarda in against tron, and again affinity I just wanted a quicker start and decrease my chances of having a hand full of high casting cards hence why I took out the 5 drops.

My play test partner and I have been contemplating batterskull over one of the five drops or moving it to the board. It's an amazing card and does a lot of things we need. I just haven't play tested it. If I was playing legacy I would say YES! Just due to SFM, but modern I am not sure.

About the colorless lands. I like going to 5. 4 ghost quarter and 1 Township seems to be a great fit. I didn't have to mulligan at all due to having 2-3 colorless lands like I use to. I have won games due to township. Making our 2/2s into 3/3s and so on helps a ton. Also gives us some wiggle room and stuff to do with our mana.

I also have tried the vial build, and its fun and explosive at time. My meta was a ton of control and pod builds. Vials helped a ton to get around the counter spells and board wipes. Then the meta shifted and I didn't care for the card anymore. Just didn't get me there most games. Now there is a ton of twin, pod, GB rock.

Now to just make a sideboard plan for the weekend to help me out during the long day. Attendance is at or around 2700 as of last night. I will be on site early. Probably around 10 am as they open to get my playmat and foil batterskull. I will be doing a ton of trading and possibly a grinder. I missed out on all my local Gps due to work and moving. Frown

I hope to see some of you there this weekend!

    Hey guys,
I been reading this forum for ages, but never really posted. I have been playing hate bears for about 2 years or so. It’s pretty much my favorite deck to play in modern currently. A local store ran an event yesterday. We had about a 32 person turn out. Enough for a 5 rounds cut to top 8. I ran a similar list to Horseshoe and took his sideboard list.

Round 1 UR Young Pyromancer/delver deck
Game 1 I lost to a ton of tokens, and dead draws. Drawing 5-6 land in a row hurt.
    Game 2
Boarded in 3 Chalice, 2 EEs, 2 Worship
I didn’t draw and of the sideboard cards, but opening hand was a Noble, Thrun, 2x smiter, and 3 land. I was pretty confident in this. Turn 1 noble, turn two smiter, Drew another second noble. Turn three smiter number 2 and noble, swing for 6. He didn’t draw anything relavent and tried to counter both thrun and smiter.
    Game 3 same board.
Had to mull to 6 here and kept a decent opener with a noble and a smiter. Turn 3 he had 2x young pyromancer out and a ***** ton of tokens. I was getting low on life. My turn four I top decked a EE and had a chalice in hand. I dropped EE for 0. Blew up the EE and chaliced for 1 to buy me some time. Top decked a worship next turn. After my opponent swung I Was at 6-7. I had 0 critters and I top decked a wildwood.  That led me to victory. He swung and got me to one which was fine since he couldn’t vapor snag anything to kill me. Then I top decked threat after threat ended up with a board state of Thrun, 2xVoice, Aven Mindcesor and a few other dudes.

    Match 2 Played infect
Game 1 he misplayed and dropped his second land too early with groundswell in hand for the kill on T3. Ended up pathing his critter and stabilizing and just went into beatdown mode.
Game 2. Had a hand with chalice, noble, path and a few land. Snap keep. He played his critter. I pathed it. Didn’t play a second land, and I knew I was golden to drop Chalice on 1 and ride it out. Turn 3 I dropped a Arbitor and ghost quartered his land and he didn’t get another one for ever.

    Match 3 Robots
Got to play a good friend of mine in this match. Game 1 started out like any normal match against robots, vomit hand down on the board and pray for something useful. I ended up having an early path for his 3 drop guy that adds +1/+1 counters. Then dropped a Pridemage T2, T3 Smiter. Did some blocking was able to get rid of two of his creatures with path + pride mage which then shut down his edge champions metal craft so I could block it with smiter and kill it.
Game 2 pretty much ended quickly. Turn 1 EE for 0, path his flyer. Pop EE to wipe most of his board. Dropped chalice for 0 and dropped a pridemage with another path in hand. He couldn’t stabilize and lost.

Math 4 and 5 I drew in with the highest win percentages.

Top 8 Consisted of 2x GW Auras, 1 Tron, 1 Pod, 1 Twin, 1 GB Rock, 1 HateBears, 1 Robots
    Played Tron
    Game 1.
I had all the hate. Arbitors, Mindcensors and ghostquarters for all the things and went to game 2 quickly.
Boarded in 3 Chalice, 2 Worship, 1 Seal, 1 Suppression field
    Game 2
I mulled to 5 kept a decent hand. Had a turn 2 smiter to his turn 3 Karn, Which I ended up killing on my turn 3 which then he dropped karn number 2 off a lucky strings.
    Game 3
Turn one dork, followed by a chalice on 1. Turn Suppression field with a Seal. Then I just drew threat after threat. I locked him out of the game early on. He had a hand of more spheres and strings after I dropped chalice on 1.

Match 2. My friend again with Robots
Game 1 I pulled out of my ass with lucky top decks to a board full of crap.
Game 2. He played a turn 1 vault skirge and passed. I was like OK?? I dropped a turn 1 chalice on 0 and a dork. Played a pridemage, pathed a vault skirge. He started to stabilize with his two drops, spellskite and vault skirge again. I dropped a chalice on 2 after I had a decent board presence. Game didn’t end well for him with smiter, pridemage, seal, thrun, linvala, and before the chalice I forgot I dropped a surpression field.
Ended up splitting in the final round.

What I took from this event. I sided out baneslayer/sigarda every game almost. I never casted the card once, and when I had it in my hand I rather have been ghost quartering or dropping bears/sideboard cards. I also haven’t missed tech edge. Dropping my colorless land count to 5 helped a lot. I was mulling less all day for having the wrong mana sources. Overall I feel that hate bears is pretty well suited for the environment. I was also testing against twin and GW auras and with the recent changes I was winning more games then losing. Sidenote I was kinda iffy on using Seal of primordium in the board, but I will have to say that card was an all star all day. Just dropping and and having an answer to anything was great. It took my opponents back and had to think about what they wanted to play.
Also at least in my local meta outside of my friends who know I have been playing this deck for ages. I got the respond all day "HATE BEARS???!?! Who plays that." and proceeded to remind them why this deck is A) Annoying to deal with B) Had a decent match up against everything.

    jblaze84,

That is Great to hear you went top 8 with it! I went to the PTQ event this weekend in richmond with a similar version and went 3-2 drop. My loses were due to mostly top decks. One to caw blade, and the other to goblins. I was playing with Missionaries instead of reinforcements and everytime I drew one of them, I wish they were reinforcements. The two extra life most games would have me the advantage and wouldn't have lost. That being said, I am redoing the list for open this weekend as well as thursday night magic in my area.

I have to agree with most of the changes you made from the guy who took the deck list to Japanese nationals. I cut the cute cards as well for more streamlined deck build for consistency.

The only difference right now between our list is I run 1 war and peace, instead of 3 SoFAF. This is mostly between my best friends and I we only had 2 swords, but never drew war and peace the entire tournament.

I love the deck though. I retired elves after the inconsistency I found it had with the new environment, so I needed a new aggro deck that fit my play style and I love this.

Vpreacher: Thats great! I unfortunatly couldn't go due to unforeseen events. Friends car had 2 flats, and breaks went as we were leaving from Maryland. So what were your match ups? and some of your sideboard strategies. I got to see a lot of the CAW blade matchups that they were streaming. I was looking at playing something like this week at FNM and the PTQ in richmond instead of elves or RUG twin.

That is a great list there. Question for you, how is the deck holding up against Valakut, control, Twin decks and other aggro decks? I am trying to formulate my new deck for standard and this has been catching my eye for a while. GW aggro, GW pod, or well af ew other ideas, but trying to keep it relevant.

That is true, my area is rampant with caw-blade and aggro. Not so much Valakut at the moment. I may end up switching to BG for next week and on out.

No dragon/slime/vat Would you recommend something in there place? Run more spot removal?

Its kind of nice having more fatties to hit the board, but thats just me.

Like said above this scrapper has the may effect.

I will be running a build similar to Jubokko, well actually similar to most of the Jund decks being posted of late and had a few questions.

I been playing the rock version of this deck and has been fun, but the Jund version looks to be more threatening.

How are you liking Hoarding dragon? He looks very situational, but it is nice that he can go fetch up, Wurm/vat then can pod him off to put them into play.

I also see that a lot of people have cut down to just running Beast within or dismember? Any reason for this, is the consistency of drawing more creatures out way the removal?

Sideboard choices, I been seeing more people putting pyroclasm in the board? I am assuming for the quick aggro match ups, but what are you guys siding out for them? or how about just general side-boarding for the deck.

    My deck list is below
    1cc:
    4 Birds of Paradise
    1 Llanowar Elves

    2cc:
    1 Sylvan Ranger
    2 Viridian Emissary

    3cc:
    1 Cadaver Imp
    1 Glissa, the Traitor
    1 Manic Vandal
    1 Pilgrim's Eye
    1 Tuktuk the Explorer

    4cc:
    1 Entomber Exarch
    1 Obstinate Baloth
    1 Phyrexian Metamorph
    1 Skinrender
    1 Thrun, the Last Troll

    5cc:
    2 Acidic Slime
1 Kazuul, Tyrant of the Cliffs
    1 Magma Phoenix
    1 Mitotic Slime
    1 Hoarding Dragon

    6cc:
    1 Grave Titan
    1 Massacre Wurm
    1 Wurmcoil Engine

    7cc
    1 Sheoldred, Whispering One

    Spells:
    4 Birthing Pod
    2 Beast Within
    2 Dismember
    1 Mimic Vat

    Lands:
    2 Blackcleave Cliffs
    4 Copperline Gorge
    2 Dragonskull Summit
    4 Forest
    1 Mountain
    4 Rootbound Crag
    2 Swamp
    4 Verdant Catacombs

    SB I was thinking
    3 Memoricide
    3 combust
    1 Acid web spider
    2 or 3 Obstinate Baloth
    1 Tuktuk the scrapper
    1 manic vandal
    1 replica
    2 perilous myr

Any suggestions or help is greatly appreciated. I will be playing this tonight.

It may be a little too soon to call it quits with elves. It has very strong matchups with a lot of the decks that are currently out. Most of the time I play FNM or another tournament. Its solid, fast, and can do a lot of damage rather quickly. We will have to adapt to the new meta game which will be splitertwin, valakut and other aggro decks. Last few times I saw valakut I crushed them, same to be said about splinter twin. Also with our side board package, and against BR vamps our alternate creature set can hurt them pretty bad.

I am going to still give this deck a run for its money. I am testing other decks out right now. U/G infect, and pod. Actually been doing quite well with both. I really enjoy elves.

Maybe we need to go back to the old roots of monument and nissa, but ehh I think it is too soon to tell.

Baloth, Spellskite, and LoV/Obstinate makes Vamps cry.

Well I had two opponents ask if I would excuse them so they could go have a good cry. One was a caw blade player I beat on turn 4/5 both games, and another was a vamp player who I went. T1 leyline T2 baloth, t3 baloth, t4 baloth spellskite. T5 he just gave up.

Been so busy moving I haven't read the forum in about a week. I tried Levy's version of elves last night didn't do too bad. Lost to vamps first round to horrid draw game three. Then proceed to smash caw blade and another vamp deck.

I did make some tweaks, my main is now very much like GodGers with 2 dismembers in the main.

My side board is the following
    1 Masticore
    3 Spellskite
    4 LeatherBack Baloth
    3 leyline
    1 melira
    3 obstinate baloth

I would have to say having the baloth/spellskite package to switch out for vamps helped a ton. 4/4 and 4/5s where unexpected and hard to deal with for them. I am liking the idea of removing the 3 O. Baloths for 2x beast with in and another leyline/spellskite/???. Last night pissed me off. Went 3-1 and didnt make top because we had 40 people and they only did four rounds so a bunch of us got screwed /sadpanda.

The deck runs very smooth. I miss GSZ but love the 4 maindeck artifact removal. I always top deck them as they drop batterskull Smile

I most likely will play this again tonight at FNM but my buddy bet me money to play Rock Pod so I may just do that to shut him up.
