I must admit, I was under the impression that the friend Jaya was going to visit was Multani, and not Karn.

But I dunno, both sound kinda off.

So Issue 9 Get Everyone Together, 10 Assault on Base, 11 Fight Belzenlok and 12 Bolas Appears?
Doesn't seem to leave much time to explain stuff and mend fences on the core issues.

Hey, you forgot the story centered around Slimefoot which is essentially one long deeply philosophical monologue from the thallid's perspective.

I would actually pay an author to write a short on that.

    You called?

Not 100% sure how I feel about the writing style. Having dialogue begin mid sentence is jarring, and prefacing dialogue with He said etc must be some modern thing. The story is cool, has some nice vibes, just not entirely sure about the style of it. Perhaps I need to warm up to it, or the writer is warming up to the franchise with this first story.

Much of the structure feels a bit "phoned in". I hope we don't rely on nostalgia alone to drive this story a la The Force Awakens, but rather the story draws upon fresh characters and builds some meaning behind them.

EDIT: Also, is everybody in the story conveniently forgetting that Liliana basically agreed to serve Bolas before they all escaped? I feel like that was kind of a big thing that the rest of the Jacewatch would be fairly mad about...

Demonic Pact's fourth ability specifically says "You lose the game". If anybody thinks Liliana is going to come out of her pacts in good fortune then they haven't been paying attention. This will not end well.

I never scoop against an unknown opponent I'm going to play again. I'd rather suffer through the pain and learn more of their deck tech and what it includes.

Started off with a mono red list but the pull towards rakdos was just too much. My mana curve doesn't top 2, and I had great fun with the low-to-the-ground mono red version, so I'm only running 21 lands

*Note, I only have one Dragonskull Summit, yes I'd like three more.

Following a brief bit of short story writing, I decided to press on with evaluations of our original Lorwyn Five. This time I write about one of my favourites, Garruk Wildspeaker and his quest for peace and quiet.

  • posted a message on MTG Flash Fan Fiction Thread
Morning all. Recently the official Wizards MTG Tumblr started an MTG Flash Fan Fic contest type thing, where a cue was provided (usually a random card), and participants had one week to write a short story of no more than 1,000 words. This generated a little bit of interest but never really went anywhere. The idea seemed fun so I decided to carry on. I thought it'd be nice to havea thread where people could submit their own flash fan fics of random cards of their choosing. The original contest was for Protean Raider, and you can see my submission here.

I recently did a flash fan fic based on Rigging Runner which you can read here.

So have at it if you will, a short story of 1,000 words based on any single card from any set. No time limit, just a place where we can critique one another's stories.

Jaya joins the Gatewatch? Oh, le sigh.

I don't think we are gonna get Oath of Jaya, I think we are gonna get Jaya-Wan Kenobi.

I'm not so sure Jaya will make it through the story alive. Considering the goggles she's wearing in the art are then shown to be worn by Chandra in her Duel Decks card. Not to mention Teferi's broken staff is then seen as being mended in the splash art - held together by a tie-knot made of Jaya's/Mother Luti's robes.

It's mentioned that sparkless Teferi's broken staff and sparked Teferi's unbroken staff is symbolism.

We used partial paris in my cEDH pod for a little while and it was was widely aggreed upon that it was dubious. It was way too easy to fill out hands with essentially exactly what we neede to win turn 3/4, and the people with slightly less competitive decks were getting no real benefit from it. We now just do one basic free mulligan and things are much fairer.

Definitely enjoyed this read... Liliana is one of the more interesting Characters in the Gatewatch (Along with Chandra and Jace), so she's one I'm usually interested to read about. Who's up next?

I'd like to cover the Origins five as well as the nu-Origins five as a priority, and then work towards primary antagonist planeswalkers before moving on to non-planeswalker characters we frequently return to.

The third in my little series, we take a look at Liliana in her quickly dissipating role as an Oppressor in the Drama Triangle, and pretty just how screwed she really is.

I'm disappointed, was hoping for something a little more insightful after your Tezzeret article. Honesty this seems more of you just venting of why you hate Gideon, which is sad because you had a great set up to talk about Gideon being suicidal and his actions of self sacrifice are his secret hope to die. Also you might wanna re-read the lore some stuff you brought up either didn't happen, you just read a summary/looked at the cards or feel like your bending what happen to further your point.

Gideon is defiantly my least favorite character of the gatewatch and I agree the most bland, so I'm not saying your wrong, just I feel there was more to the character and after how you look through Tezzeret figured you give the same kind of insight.

Appreciate the criticisms. Next up I was gonna dive into Liliana, so I'll bare all this in mind. It's difficult to judge just how much tongue-in-cheek people like to read regarding specific characters. I just found it incredibly difficult with Gideon because his character feels like its been written with a specific goal in mind, damned be the road that gets him there. It's not a very "natural" progression of character, and feels quite forced with the writing and situations they've put him in, alongside the weird decisions he's made. It very much feels like flash situations are written in for him to make decisions, but the writers haven't considered the long game - if they had they'd have noticed that they're putting him in basically the same situation over and over again and not having his character actually learn, ever. There's an awful lot of plot convenience being used.

I shall write very differently going forward.

Regarding following planeswwalkers through the Blind Eternities, it's mentioned in a number of books that they leave "trails" specific to them. I recall Baltrice leaving a trail of fiery footsteps through the aether that Jace could follow. Similarly in this story, Gideon is a big ol' shining beacon of light because he's just so damn pure the goodness of his heart can be tracked through the folds between planes. *vomits*

My last post regarding Tezzeret proved to be quite popular around and about, and a few people enjoyed the "alternative" look on the past of some of the characters they didn't know so well. I've decided to continue the tradition, mainly for newer players of the game.
This week I decided to cover Gideon within the Karpman Drama Triangle, one of the most badly outlined characters in the entire story, and easily one of the most easily hated characters in the Gatewatch post nu-Jace. If anyone doesn't learn from a bad experience, it's our meatslab.
