Gaze of Granite does hit planeswalkers, but at sorcery speed. Sorcery speed is what makes this card lack luster. Tapping out on your turn can get you killed in this game.
There is also the classic move of Deeding at the end of the player’s turn before you, dropping a creature and attacking a walker with haste.
The board state can change dramatically before your next turn that it is best to not tap out on your turn if you can help it.
I was not advocating Gaze of Granite over any of those cards, simply as a complement to them. I am aware that it being sorcery speed makes it less desirable at times, but the ability to blow up everything other than lands is a powerful tool at any speed.
I do find it odd that you present two creatures without flash as alternatives for dealing with planeswalkers at instant speed. Yes, there are cards that give your guys flash (essentially) or let you cheat them into play at instant speed, but not enough to say that they are reliable answers at instant speed IMO, esp. without blue in the equation.
Regardless, my viewpoint is that if you want to max out on sweepers that can kill as many things as possible, Gaze is definitely worthy of your consideration.
One thing to note with Gaze is that, unlike Deed, it destroys planeswalkers. That has been very relevant for me, and makes Gaze worthy of inclusion, IMO.
Could you clarify, please? Is it that you find fault with the course of action? It seems to me that this would be the optimum strategy.
Penny for your thoughts?
He clarified in the next sentence; he feels that this behavior, coupled with their scarcity, will prevent him from picking up copies of the cards due to the price.
I run it in my build of The Mimeoplasm and it's pretty solid when used on the 'plasm after exiling Thought Gorger or something similar, since the Coffin "remembers" a creature's counters (and Auras) when it exiles it. It can also, as mentioned, be used as a removal spell for an opposing General or as a quasi-removal spell for other stuff. Definitely one of my favorite cards.
Yeah...it was $18-20 on TCG. I know because I was looking at picking one up a couple months ago...sigh. Stupid single tournament appearance being enough to double any old card.
It placed well in Baltimore the week before, and made T8 2 weeks before that in Nashville. I am surprised it didn't blow up before now, honestly.
What are people's thoughts on Sever the Bloodline? As long as your opponent doesn't have a sac outlet (unlikely as that may be in today's meta) Sever handles the Voice of Resurgence problem nicely.
I am playing 3 copies in my 75; it's been really solid in testing.
As Cloudpost is banned in Modern, surely you don't believe that format is sustaining Vesuva's price!
As is the case with pretty much any card that maintains value after a banning, price memory is a big factor, with its popularity in EDH being the other factor at work.
I thought the same thing when I read the post that he's referring to (all-foil 5C superfriends touted at $7k+ seemed a little out of place considering the rest of this thread). I don't see that post anymore, though.
I never saw the foil 5C post, so I assumed that the bragging comment was directed at my post, which confused me a little.
I have tons of pimp stuff, but my favorite is a group of cards: once I catch up with the Gatecrash legendary creatures (still need foil copies of Aurelia, Zegana, and Lazav; prices are too high to justify buying them at the moment), I have a copy of every legendary creature ever printed, including a foil copy of each one ever printed in foil.
Nonfoil Unmask has never been more than ~$5-6 at any point in the last decade, and has spent most of that time around $3; it might have been higher than that at some point before that, but I don't recall that being the case. You either saw a price for a foil copy, a misprinted copy, or an error in pricing.
SCG killed it again for me over the weekend. I worked out with Ben early last week on what cards I would like them to bring to the Open in St. Louis for me, with the primary item being a Beta Timetwister for upgrade purposes. I asked for scans of the SP and NM copies, and Ben said they would just bring them both so I could see them in person; amazing. All of the cards I requested were brought to the event, and the team was, as always, effective and pleasant. I can't praise them enough.

Or the immensely amusing Leyline of Singularity.
Please elaborate on how you are measuring the "need" for Aether Vial in the format, considering it's barely played.
