Barinellos posted a message on Mirrodin QuestionsPosted in: Storyline SpeculationQuote from toto4567@Windfall
It's a matter of show, don't tell. If we simply started with a New Phyrexia set with the eventual exposition about how it used to be Mirrodin, that's just telling. Actually seeing Mirrodin fall and be corrupted is showing. It's just better storytelling in most cases.
I agree that it wasn't perfectly executed (in particular, the "everyone and their mums are now evil" shtick was silly), but overall I think the idea of showing Mirrodin being corrupted has merit.
Unfortunately to have undone so much of their previous story leaves a sour taste in more mouths than a satisfactory one. While showing the fall is certainly more dramatic in the immediate, it would have been much more shocking to have learned the world we were on the entire time was something we were familiar with already. It's a twist ending rather than a retcon laden, and quite frankly, half told story.
Aside from that, we were never able to suspend our disbelief given how much they strawmenned the Mirrans. -

GodOfAtheism posted a message on [[DGM]] DailyMTG Previews 4/12: Putrefy and Voice of ResurgencePosted in: The Rumor MillQuote from clan_iraqLowered expectations, really. Once upon a time, "control" didn't imply "aggro with relevations and flash". Control now feels more like a flavor of aggro than a deck unto itself. More importantly, plays like a flavor of aggro. Not all people are turned on by turning cards sideways. And the line where those were just tempo decks anyway is frayed at best
*Shrugs.* I've played many, many creatureless decks. I like them, but I also realise they're not that great. Thing is, some kind of emphasis on creatures to where people want to be playing them is healthy for the game. Creatures represent consistent ways of dealing damage so that they don't have to print burn/mill/alternate win conditions specifically to pacify people who feel like they're somehow better than everyone else because they don't want to "turn sideways."
Seriously, I've been playing this game since Beta. I've played every kind of deck there is. I'm responsible for designing more than a few of them. Going creatureless does not make you better than everyone who plays them and playing them does not make you better than those icky counterspell users.
But moreover, the main contribution to designing the game so that every deck will want to play creatures also means it's safe to maindeck creature removal. I've played in formats where creatureless decks were a large part of the metagame and trying to balance a deck so that it can have enough removal for aggro but side it all out against creatureless decks...now that's when control had it rough. Not now.
By making creatures good enough that every deck wants a few, every deck is also safe running removal without fear of it being wasted slots. When there's a strong enchantment in the format, people will maindeck efficient creatures to deal with those too. The rest of the time, they're comfortably sideboard cards for rogue decks that nonetheless stand a solid chance of hindering you if they show up.
Since they've also managed to get this far without ever making a format where aggro was the only legitimate option, I'd say they're doing pretty darned well. -

CorpT posted a message on How to correctly play aggro?Neither of those are correct. The best way to play aggro is to understand your role. Aggro is not always about running every single thing out as fast as possible. It is about knowing what to kill, when to go to the dome, when to block, what to attack with, what order to play things in, etc...Posted in: Magic General
Understanding your role is the best way to know when to play what. Knowing what is going to prevent you from doing 20 damage is the key. If you have a creature and they have a blocker, is it worth Bolting the creature to remove a blocker, or should you save the bolt for later?
The best method is to just practice it though. Go in with the understanding that you're trying to be efficient. You probably don't have a lot of draw spells, so you need to make everything count. -

I'm sorry to hear that. My own grandmother passed away this last November so, I feel your pain. I'm sorry for your loss. The news hit me like a ton of bricks when my grandmother went and I wish you all the best in this time of grieving and remembrance.
Now I am off to bed. I stayed up all night playing Magic and Mario at a friend's house. One of the members of the playgroup lately has been getting really full of himself in the worst way so I had to crush him and his Aggro Dimir deck with the R/w Boros sligh. After two quick wins and one complete blow out I saw the quiet anger and defeat burn in his eyes and I knew my work was done. Though, the blowout was a little harsh but deserved so, I think from now on he will be wary of anything I have in red sleeves like everybody else. One of my friends quit immediately from our three way free for all the moment he saw me pull the Red deck box out.
Oh, I finally worked out a rough tag line I like for either the clan signatures or maybe a custom shirt I'll make for the clan this summer.
Front; Red Mana Symbol or custom graphic for FoS, still deciding.
Back; All hail to the burning standard as my Salvation lies in Fire.
I like it but, I think it still needs some work. It would be my FNM/casual Magic/Small town tournament shirt. I think the idea has merit.

I was going to throw the title Viceroy and Fire or Flame in the mix, but Seneschal sounds awesome.

It is a fantastic post but, it is just another reason why redthirst is wearing the big boy pants around here.

The owner of the site put that bit of helpful advice somewhere in the graphics forum but it was buried and forgotten.

My name is Sean Lunderman though I go by the web handle, Sioux. I hereby place my request to join this illustrious organization.
I have two reasons for wanting to join the clan, Fires of Salvation.
The first reason I want to join, to make a long story short, is because if not for the color Red I probably would have eventually quit playing entirely several years ago. The long story in question left me with a love for Red and Goblin creatures that borders on the reckless but, it is the color I chose through desperate circumstance and I have been rewarded for my decision several times since then and I am happy I made it.
The second reason I wish to join is due to the fact that a handful of members of this clan have at one time or another impressed me with their raw acumen of the game when it comes to the color Red. I mean, the very fact that these clan members are successfully playing red competitively makes me happy I play this color. There is a level of admirable assurance in the reasoning in almost every post by some members about the color Red when it pertains to the game in whatever facet they are arguing. The thing I love the most is that clan members of Fire of Salvation always present a convincing case that the color Red no matter the block-core set or otherwise-has a presence and a place in the meta game of Magic the Gathering. It is inspiring and makes me want to be apart of this clan of successful and knowledgeable red mages.
These two reasons above make me want to be a part of the clan, Fires of Salvation. I, too, want to be a successful and happy red mage and I hope I am considered for entry.
1
Though, if I had to vote on this list I would have to say New Phyrexia. I do think the other places are still horrible but the Phyrexians can make use of you no matter what state of life you are in. It doesn't matter about the color your ass is used. True, there is a safe haven but with my luck I would be dead before I even think about being safe.

I was listening to Fun's We Are Young and I got into the mood for making fire.

Okay. I pumped up some contrast and did a little focus work to really capture the eye. And of course the text.
