  • posted a message on Group Looking for More - Richmond, VA Area - Cube, EDH, & More
Have a great group of 5-6 people who play fairly regularly and would love to have more.

We are mostly in our late 20's and early 30's, and the group consists of a mix of very strong players and some newer. Some of the girlfriends and wives also play.

We typically want to cube draft or play EDH 2x a month, and possibly more if we get enough people interested.

PM or post here for more info if interested.

Full P9 and a few additional moxes. Sold my vintage collection in the early 2000's and really regret it now. It did help me with money i needed then, but I still feel like I should have found a way to keep them.

  • posted a message on What is your 'Least Favourite Colour' in Magic?
Red seems the least developed, so I'd have to go with that. The color I draft the least according to my last 40-50 drafts is blue, but that is probably because I haven't been playing Dimir or Simic as much in Gatecrash drafts.

Did you introduce them back into the game by making them draft a cube that they didnt build themselves which contained cards/mechanics/abilities from all across the history of Magic? Because if you did, its your fault they found it too complex - not Wizards'. :p

Def not. I have a cube and most of the players in my playgroup are very up to date with the rules/mechanics etc.. These are not the ones that this post is about. I'd say out of 12 or so people that play, 9-10 would never say magic is too difficult to understand/complex.

Our group does draft the cube, draft recent sets, and play EDH. Some of us also play in online drafts on Magic Online/Standard Dailys.

We have introduced brand new players who are doing just fine with rules so I am starting to believe that the issue is more or less that they just are not as into magic as some of the others in the group are.

I really do appreciate all the responses. They just help me realize how much I am loving magic and that it's ok that it isn't for everyone too.

HWhen you come back and that magic is gone because you're not the same person anymore, it's pretty easy to say it's because the game has changed rather than because you've changed yourself.

Well put. I believe that is exactly where they are now. They play to be social with the group of friends, but it's just not the same for them as they once remember it.

BTW the group of pals that are playing are mostly in their upper 20's and early 30's. So I can see how that game you were playing as a senior in high school just isn't as fun as you remember it being.

    Great discussion so far guys.

Trust me, I love magic as much now as I ever have. I love new mechanics, new cards, flavor, art, formats etc...

The only reason I decided to post this was due to having people who were interested in playing again, look it over, play a bit, and then say it's become too much now.

You can't help what you like or dislike. I loved Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena, but I think the new Shooters are bit too much. So I am guessing some of the playgroup feels that way.

I don't think it's whether they understand the rule or not either. One of my other pals directly said "I understand the rule, but I don't like the way it works" in response to how Indestructible creatures work. So it must be a taste thing.

I am not someone who plays competitive magic anymore. Those days have come and gone for me. I do however have my own cube and draft occasionally with friends. These friends range from people who played in late 90's-early 2003, and some even more recently.

When talking to a few of them, one of them said the following:

"honestly, magic has become too complex for me to really enjoy it, too many abilities, rules, etc"

These guys did play in Friday night magics and those types of things before, so it isn't that they are not capable of learning the rules, they just feel like there are too many and it causes it to be too complex and not fun.

Does it suck the fun out of the game to have to look up rules in the middle of matches? Is it bad that the rules now fit into a 120+ page word document?

Part of me feels like it could just be nostalgia on their part that makes them remember the game being better before.

Of course it is hard to grasp all the different abilities for a decade worth of magic that any person has missed, but are they right? There is too much now for Magic's own good?

I know that our playgroup could not play certain cards that have abilities nobody likes/or just cards that cause a headache when resolved, but that only band aids it.

They may also just not like magic anymore and it's their nice way of saying that. I know Wizards is trying to make it easier for new people to join, but I thought it was interesting to hear people who were experienced come in and say it's too much for them to enjoy.

    Curious what your thoughts are.

  • posted a message on What does your group tthink of proxies?
My group would rather people bring proxies and play then have them either not come and/or play something very underpowered.

We have some players who go all in with buying everything, and others who proxy their entire decks. We just prefer people do not write with sharpies. Print out cards slipped over lands make it easier for those playing in the game.

So I'm doing a little research for a friend so please answer truthfully

What in Magic caught your attention?
Why did you start playing Magic? If you switched from another game then please say why you switched
    Why do you play Magic?
    Why do you keep playing?

    - Started playing in mid-late 90's. Always loved fantasy novels, Dragonlance in particular. Friend got me involved.

    - I play because I enjoy the fantasy genre, I love board games/card games and I love the friends/family that I still get to enjoy the game with.

Nostalgia, competition, friends, family, and fun. What more can I ask for?

  • posted a message on Cockatrice Legal Disputes
For those that did play with friends/family etc.. Even though Cockatrice is down and many of the giant servers may also follow, you can always setup your own server and play easily on your own. This solves the problem of being able to test/play with friends, but it doesn't solve the community issue and what we have lost by having Cockatrice go down.

  • posted a message on How do you feel about this Youtube video of Alex Bertoncini cheating at SCG Kansas?
Hopefully something does come of this. It's sad to cheat in a home game with nothing on the line, but to do so and get caught on camera in an event like this... It cheats the game and everyone there.

  • posted a message on Rift
Been running a guild in rift for about a month or two. On the Shatterbone Shard/Guardian.

Def would love to see some of the MTG players on this server, so if any of you are there or are interested in playing hit me up here. I have recruit a friend links but don't need any more signups due to already getting the top reward there.

One thing that is great is as a 50 i can run people through dungeons and even if they are mixed range (level 10, 33, 23, and me for instance) We can just run an instance that gives the 33 xp and the other levels get great xp too, so it's nice to be able to group and level like that.

Patch 1.3 looks good. Def check it out if you havent.

I run into the same problem of having some decks that are a bit overly tuned with top cards which results in some games not being as fun for the people who seem to make their decks out of the common/uncommon bins at the magic shop.

That's why I have some decks that are better suited against people who play this way. It's sometimes hard to figure out the right balance on what to use, because I also want to have fun myself and it isn't always ideal to play the sub optimal deck when I wanted to play the good one. I'd rather play and have a little less fun than I would have, than to make it not as fun for the majority of those playing with me.
