Glad to see that the group has been so active in my absence--I actually had to cover an entire page to catch up! I've been busy because I started my new job this week. I'm in the E-commerce department at Pawn America, if anyone was curious. It's not the most glamorous job in the world, but I love it so far and it pays more than $0, which is what I was going for.

I had the pleasure of helping a buddy open most of a case (5 of 6 boxes) of Dark Ascension tonight, which is awesome because I can't afford any myself. He ended up doing pretty well, getting three Sorins and some cool foil rares like Moonveil Dragon, Grafdigger's Cage, and Thalia. I actually forgot about the whole dynamic of possibly opening mythic DFCs, and how that jacks up the mythic count in a given box. I was expecting to see 4-6 (as per boxes of older sets), but most boxes had 7-9.

@Aardvark: I completely agree with the sentiment that true pimping of a deck is a never-ending process. There always seems to be something else you can work toward, even when you want to be happy with a deck :p It's why I stopped after 2 decks (technically 2.5, but I don't buy cards toward the third--just trade).

@Blood: When I think of white-bordered pimp, I have to lean in favor of Unlimited. I love the bolder colors and darker print way too much. Even on something like Animate Dead, where the alternate 4th version would mean something to you and me, most people will just look and assume it's 5th Ed because of the coloration. Meanwhile, Unlimited cards (especially non-white ones) are unmistakable.

I actually like that quite a bit, as I was always a huge fan of the Ravnica landscapes. I'll be interested to hear what others have to say about your image and my story so far.

@Dresden: I definitely like most of your suggestions, and I was just waiting to see if anyone else wanted to weigh in before adding or cutting anything.

Just so you guys know, I submitted a back story for the clan contest to Psi. Hopefully we can get some ideas together and win this thing!

Hey guys, I was wondering if any of you sold MTGO cards. It was suggested I ask you in here.

    Thanks

We used to have a guy for that (flat_head), but I haven't heard anything from him in awhile and I'm not sure what he's up to. Truth be told, I'm not even sure I know who all plays MTGO in the clan. Hopefully someone can help you out.

Sweet! I head out to help a friend move into his new house this weekend, and now I come back to see that 1) Matt's a member, and 2) Everyone has some Dark Ascension cards already.

Did anyone here go to a prerelease, and if so, how did you do and what did you play?

dust settles. lets talk about magic.

I want to bring our attention to a magic card:

sylvan library, $40 for a NM copy of legends edition on SCG.

WOW that's certainly a mover. it used to be much less expensive. I noticed that the other day and picked up a pair for about $16 each on ebay. I think i got a deal because the title made it sound like there was only one and the auction ended on a friday night. i guess it's because it's popular in EDH as well as in maverick and a variety of other green legacy decks. i see on ebay a BIN that tempted me for japanese white border 5th edition mint. 2 available about $15. how cool is that>?? im a fan of foreign white border cards since i dont use foils in my decks. my reasoning is some cards like duals are not available in foil and i like consistency, the other being that it's more pimp to me to have many decks than one deck fully japanese foiled/korean/alpha/beta. also i saw someone get penalized in a tournament before for having a partially foiled deck, no fun. foreign WB gives the cards a unique and "pimp" look (to me) since foil japanese is not an option. i know a couple other people who are into this niche of the market as well. original printing takes the cake though so i went for legends. i think it is a better financial investment since the market is wider for original black border printing. korean would be nice but they are very expensive. other WB cards of note are alt 4th, really weird cards. alt 4th sylvan library is awesome. summer, which is ridiculously expensive. i saw a summer island in EX condition on sale for $325.

I recently picked up a winters mishras factory. what a cool card. i want to get 4 winters but the price is so high i might settle for 4 seasons, or i might settle for my 4th edition set and trade the seasonals. decisions decisions....

i got food poisoning... UGGGHHH sucks. hope you all are well and healthy

Sorry to hear about the food poisoning--hopefully it doesn't persist much longer.

Also, $40 for any copy of Sylvan Library seems a little insane. It has indeed gone up, and it seems like every person playing green in EDH wants one. I completely understand, as I typically try to include one of those in any deck if I don't have a Sensei's Divining Top already.

You could also consider the poor man's version (which I enjoy quite a bit)--Mirri's Guile. It doesn't provide all the utility, but still helps in a nearly identical way. It's slightly easier on the wallet, but not by too much since it was only printed once.

Another reason to print out labels online. Just shipped some bubble mailers today, 2oz each (about 10 cards with toploaders and sleeves) - $1.81 with DC.

I really wish I could do that, but I don't have access to a printer at all. I guess I'm stuck with just taking it to the Post Office and dealing with their prices. I do like the idea of eBay for the bubble mailers, because paying $5 for 10 at retail stores isn't great either.

I also am very glad that we're sticking around as a clan, and I should clarify my earlier comments--I didn't mean to make it sound like I was okay conceding the Guild (if it came off that way), but I was only trying to be positive and focus on the benefits that we all enjoy as a result of one another's insight. I'm stoked that we'll still be going strong.

@Josh: I agree with Malacoda, you've put a ton of time into this site and you deserve to be focusing on what's more important right now. I sincerely hope that you are able to work everything out to your satisfaction, and I'm very grateful for your history on this site, as you trusted me on some of the highest dollar trades I've ever executed.

Also, just an FYI to everyone: USPS rates increased a little since last week. It now costs $2.80 to ship a 4X7 first class with delivery confirmation, up from $2.51 the last time I mailed something. The employee I spoke to said the rate hikes were across the board. Just be ready for it if you're shipping cards soon and you weren't already aware.

I would agree that if Psi is no longer in charge, we should probably let the clan go by the wayside as it was his brainchild.

Besides, it's not as if the members haven't already formed a connection that we can take with us. I'm sure I'll continue to have dealings with everyone in the Guild, since they are among the highest quality traders and sellers on the site. Even if we don't have a little corner in which to chat, the spirit of this clan isn't going anywhere.

Sigh I forgot, okies. Not like I'll be posting a great deal on mtgs anyway here on out, sorry to cause any trouble at all. In the future, group pm's for tradestuff eh?

Yeah, that sounds like a plan. Hopefully I won't have to pester too many people, as I still don't really have any money to spend on the game at the moment. Besides, you know to message me if there's anything you're looking for--I'm helpful sometimes.

To everyone, are there any cards that you've been trying to stock up on lately, for reasons of price or scarcity? Cards that I've been trying hard to acquire in deals lately include Vampiric Tutor and Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth. They've both crept up in price a bit over the last couple weeks (Tutor from ~15 to ~17 and Urborg from ~9-10 to ~12), and I know that the more people I introduce to EDH, the more that want those kinds of cards. What else should I be looking out for?

Good to see this thread was resurrected. I read through the whole thing and was shocked to see that no one mentioned anything about Common Market. They're from Seattle, and they've been around a while. Their tracks have generally awesome beats, clever and insightful lyrics, and perfect flow. Their self-titled is my favorite, and then Tobacco Road (though featuring a couple different styles) also had some highlights. Here are a couple examples:

"Re-Fresh" (first track from self titled, starts about :20 in)

"Tobacco Road" (title track from album)

"Brasso" (different flavor, from Winter's End EP)

I'm surrounded by Rhymesayers and Doomtree up here, but I still give these guys a bunch of play in my hip hop playlists.

@Ice: What sets are we talking about for those boxes? If you're considering getting Dark Ascension boxes at that price, then I think it's a great idea. Hell, even Innistrad would give you a chance at $85 a box. I guess I just wanted to clarify what you were asking.

@Blood: Like Malacoda, I'm also curious about exactly what you mean by lower-value Standard cards. My stuff has been pretty picked over, but I could use a couple more duals and I'd like to at least try to help out.

I'm also a little bit bummed about the fact that DKA is going to feature a mythic Equipment card that flips into a Demon. If anyone happens across a foil one of those (down the road a bit, I know), I'd be interested in talking business because of my stupid desire to throw it in my EDH deck.

Okay, I know we're usually not good with clan games and whatnot (as the games really aren't our thing), but I figured you all might want to see this and decide if we REALLY want to do it. I personally, bite at writing and all that, but again, it's not just my decision. Remember to post here if you think we should or shouldn't do it, as currently I am the only one from our guild allowed to post in the Clan Council thread. Clan Mascot

I don't have a strong opinion on this, but it might be fun. However, I have no photoshop skills whatsoever. If someone else wanted to create a mascot, I'd volunteer to work on something of a back story.

If you need help picking, let me know! I have tons of ideas (some of which totally aren't viable... please, Dream Halls, please?) for Legacy, and I've learned to pilot most decks at this point Grin

EDIT: By the way, I'm splitting a box of Future Sight with a friend, so I'll post anything cool that comes out of it Smile

Good luck on the box, man. I'll be interested to hear what gets pulled for sure.

Also, I know what magiccards.info says and what eBay looks like, but what could I realistically expect to get out of an Arabian Nights Mountain? Has anyone ever traded or sold one of these before? I found one in an old land box of mine. I'd say it's pretty close to NM with just the tiniest little white spot on the bottom border.

Im thinking of opening a mtg store eventually and me and a friend are gonna dump about $2k in just buying and selling mtg cards for profit until we can build the initial investment. Does anyone know anywhere where I can get a case for under $500 shipped?

That's a pretty tall order, at least as far as I know. The lowest case prices I've seen recently for any of the newer sets would be between $510-520, and those are all on eBay. I'm not sure where else one would even go to get a case, provided you have no hookup at a distributor. The only time a friend and I ever split a case, it ended up costing us $530 (it was M11).

Seriously, good luck though, because I've often thought about how awesome it would be to own a game shop. I just balk at the fact that I'd need about $20K startup capital, and I wouldn't turn a profit for probably the first year and a half (I'm only familiar with Magic and Warhammer, and to a much lesser extent D&D, Warmachine, and Pathfinder in the gaming world, so I'd need to hire help to establish other games). On the bright side, my collection could probably power singles sales through the first year and beyond.
