Lol, I know Modern and Vintage are two very different formats, but I still think it is funny that many people are saying Monastery Mentor isn't good enough for modern, and yet here in the Vintage thread people are praising it. #MentorsInAllFormats
I know, I Lol'd so hard we I saw this thread after the discussion in the rumor mill. I think someone called the rumor mill the humor mill once, haha
Can anyone build or give info on how to build a Fate Reforged text document for MWS?
Hell I'd prefer apprentice but nobody uses it anymore.
If I am not mistaken, you just open a new text file in a text editor or notebook type program and enter in all the names of the cards, casting costs etc... You can open a text file from any of the other sets that have been made previously to see the format that you need to enter the information in. I tried it once myself and probably could have done the whole thing, but it is VERY time consuming from what I can tell.
Flavorful card though. Besides pseudo-card advantage, I'm sure there are low power creatures you could abuse coming back. Rotting Mastodon for example would be worth B/B if you had it.
Yeah and "It costs three and doesn't do anything! Harumph!"
Hard to say what impact it will have but certainly a powerful effect. Too bad its same cost on the curve as Rabblemaster though.
Outside of Jeskai tokens (which I have said repeatedly it could see play in) there is no deck for it. Go ahead and dump $120 for your playset. Watch the meta adapt quickly or go over the top. More and more board wipes are played main and sideboard these days and they ALL clear mentor and all his tokens.
That hasn't stopped Rabblemaster yet.
Seeker is a 2/2 for 2 so everything else on the card is all upside. Not the case for mentor. He is behind the P/T ratio curve. For a creature to see play it better be format warping busted. Which this guy isn't because he can easily be contained.
"For a creature to see play it better be format warping busted". False. Aschloud Phoenix. Heir of the Wilds. Akroan Crusader. Battlewise Hoplite. Prognostic Sphinx. Satyr Wayfinder. Please show me how these cards are any more "format warping busted" than Monastery Mentor.
None of those cards are behind in P/T ratio is neither is rabblemaster. Rabble is a 4/2 attacking the next turn if uncontested and then goes up in 2 power each turn he isn't killed or blocked (token + power increase =2).
You obviously cannot follow subject matter because when I said "For a creature to see play it better be format warping busted" it was reffering to mentor being behind in P/T ratio. That was referenced by the previous sentence to that statement.
Ok, but now you are comparing a best-case scenario to a worst-case scenario again. For example.. Mentor comes down and attacks for three next turn when you burn their blocker out of the way and craps out a 1/1 prowess to boot! Compare this to poor old Rabblemaster which just comes down and probably gets Lightning Striked or blocked by Rhino. Since everything goes over the top of Rabblemaster, why on earth would anyone play such an underpowered card?
Monastery Mentor looks like the perfect card for Jeskai Tokens. The other cards spoiled don't really fit the plan that well, but popping out prowess tokens is big game here. Rabblemaster, for as powerful as it is, seems like the cut.
I understand the desire to cut Rabblemaster but honestly the red tokens are sometimes necessary for the one turn killshot with Stoke the Flames (Or at least the nice tempo play of Rabblemaster, go to combat convoke stoke). The only other card in the deck that produces red tokens is Hordeling Outburst. Also, sometimes you are guaranteed that one red token from Rabblemaster, whereas with the monk you need additional card investment and is much more vulnerable to removal without a gain in value (unless we are talking about the monk being a mid to late game play). Not saying its bad, I ordered my playset, but it will take some testing.
Sweet baby back ribs.. I think people might be underestimating this guy in Jeskai Tokens. I find Seeker of The Way to be a big dead draw in the mid to late game. This might actually make your opponents fear your late game more than your early game, if that were at all possible.
Also with Stoke the Flames "Your Soulfire Grand Master can help you cast this spell.... cast this spell... cast this spell... cast this spell..."
Another neat play I found over the weekend: I didn't have a 3rd land (had Forest & Nykthos in play), but I managed Turn 1 Elvish Mystic and Turn 2 Courser. I had gas in my hand, including a couple of Genesis Hydras. So on turn 3, I went ahead and cast a Hydra for one, adding two devotion to the board and getting to shuffle my library in the process. Still didn't see a land on top, so did miss the land drop, but had 5 mana on Turn 4 thanks to devotion.
Agreed. There have been games I have won almost directly attributable to the fact that I Genesis Hydra'd for one or two when I was in a bind.

Please keep mainboarding Anger of The Gods so you're knocked out round one and I don't have to face you round two.
