posted a message on UW Draw-GO Control
Attended HOU Game Day with this build (slightly changed from what I have on pg. 1):

    4 rounds then top 8:

    R1 vs. 4c Approach (Fog deck) 2-0
In game 1 I played an early Gideon of the Trials, activated his +1 once and created his emblem after a couple of turns trying to beat down. He played an early Fevered Visions, which concerned me at first, but once I had the "I can't lose" emblem I was pretty sure I was good. I still ended up playing Cast Out on it a few turns later to keep him from drawing more cards. I was able to get him to 8 then he played his win-con Approach of the Second Sun. For a second I was concerned, but then remembered I had the emblem in play. When he re-read the emblem again a couple of turns later, he thought for a moment and realized that he didn't have anything to remove Gideon and conceded.
Game 2 I had no doubt he was waiting for me to play Gideon again. On his turn 3 he played a cycle land and left 2 lands open (He did admit afterwards that he had the Negate). So on my turn 3 I played Kefnet the Mindful with 6 cards in hand. He knew he was in trouble (he sided out some of his fog effects). I went on the beatdown plan for 6 turns and got him after a couple of fog spells he did keep and Spell Queller'd the final one to win the match.

    Sided out/in:
    - 1 Dovin Baan
    - 2 Fumigate
    - 1 Immolating Glare
    - 1 Stasis Snare
    + 4 Spell Queller
    + 1 Negate

    R2 vs. BG sacrifice 2-0
I played this deck when Collected Company was in standard and loved it. Unfortunately without that and a few other cards it's decent, but doesn't have that same type of reach as it once did. He added in Bontu the Glorified and Oketra's Monument for more critters (I had a version with Rhonas the Indomitable as well).
Unfortunately for him I am familiar with how the deck works. Shutting down the appropriate cards (Catacomb Sifter, Duskwatch Recruiter, and any sacrifice effects) will stall them out with a bunch of little creatures that you can Fumigate (of course, destroy any Zulaport Cutthroats first).
So, both games were very similar. I countered or exiled whatever was threatening, took some beats, wiped the board, and gave the Gideon and Gearhulk beatdown. I believe both games he barely got me into the single digits.
A couple of interesting situations came up in both games concerning Westvale Abbey. In the first game he started gaining ground with 2 to 3 small creatures where he'd sent them all in at me, I would then beat down with a Gearhulk and he'd make a token from Westvale Abbey and block. So in that interaction I was losing the war, but then I played 'MY' Westvale Abbey and surprised him. He could no longer attack and gain advantage. Once I played a Gideon of the Trials and started the bigger beatdown the writing was on the wall. In game 2 we got into the same staring match with my Gearhulk and his Westvale token blocking. The difference was he had a Zulaport Cutthroat out as well and was causing me to lose a life each time. I drew into one of my Confiscation Coups, stole his Cutthroat, played Gideon and commenced on the Gideon/Gearhulk beatdown.

    Sided out/in:
    - 1 Dovin Baan
    - 1 Kefnet the Mindful
    - 1 Hieroglyphic Illumination
+ 1 Descend Upon the Sinful
    + 2 Confiscation Coup

R3 vs. GW humans with planeswalker support 1-2
He was playing Thalia's Lieutenant, Thraben Inspector, Thalia, Heretic Cathar, and various other humans with Gideon, Ally of Zendikar and Nissa, Voice of Zendikar for support. In the first game I stumbled on mana a little bit and he was able to get enough on board with support from Gideon and Nissa to get me after a good fight. I removed the first Gideon and Nissa with Cast Outs, but he played a 2nd Nissa and I didn't have the counter. In the second game he sided in Cast Out for my enchantment-based removal, but fortunately a timely Fumigate and Gearhulk beats took the game. The final game was quite a let down on my side. I was stuck on 2 lands after a mull to 6 for too long and by the time I got to 4 lands he already had 4 creatures, Gideon, AOZ, and Ajani Unyielding in play. I wasn't coming back from that.

    Sided out/in:
    - 1 Dovin Baan
    - 1 Kefnet the Mindful
    - 1 Hieroglyphic Illumination
    - 1 Gideon of the Trials
    - 1 Negate
    - 1 Stasis Snare (I think..)

+ 1 Descend Upon the Sinful
    + 1 Declaration in Stone
    + 4 Spell Queller

    R4 vs. R/B mid-range ID
The top 4 players in the swiss were already set for the top 8, so we ID'd. My son faced this guy the round before (playing Grixis Control)and just beat him. He was at 2 and his opponent was still at 20. My son casts Nicol Bolas, God-Pharaoh and used his +2. He snagged a Chandra, Torch of Defiance and killed the one creature his opponent had on board. He stabilized and won.

    Top 8:
    The decks were:
    2 Grixis Control
    1 UW Control*
    1 GW Humans
    1 Temur Energy
    1 GW Energy
    1 RB Mid-range
    1 BG sacrifice

    Pairings were:
    Quarters:
UW Control vs. BG Sacrifice (UW Control; 2-0)
Grixis Control vs. GW Energy (GW Energy)
Temur Energy vs. Grixis Control (Temur Energy)
GW Humans vs. RB mid-range (GW Humans)

I must admit, I was pretty happy to facing the BG sacrifice deck again. Things went pretty much the same. He did get Ormendahl, Profane Prince in play as a last ditch effort in the second game, but I had the Stasis Snare for him and that was that.

Just as a note: My son, Jarod, played Grixis Control against Jared playing Temur Energy, so this was the Battle of the Jarods! He ended up with a couple of unfortunate games though. After he was able to remove everything his opponent played Jared then top-decks a Glorybringer to beat for 3 turns and steal the first game while he was drawing lands. He then drew very few lands in the second game and couldn't keep up. He was still generally happy though since he 3-0-1'd in the swiss.

    Semis:
UW Control vs. Temur Energy (UW Control; 2-0)
GW Humans vs. GW Energy (GW Energy)

Fortunately, I was able to avenge my son and win against Jared, but unfortunately for game play there isn't much to say. He mulled to 5 both games, was stuck on 2 lands for too long. I Negated his second Attune with Aether in the first game and he had a somewhat slow start in the second where I Essence Scattered his two attempts with Rogue Refiners, so I easily controlled him. The only thing I actually forgot to do is side in Solemnity, but I don't know if it would've helped anyway.

    Finals:
UW Control vs. GW Energy (UW Control; 2-0)

I was happy to see the GW Energy defeat the GW Humans deck (he did it with a surprise Appeal // Authority for just enough). Not so much that I didn't think I couldn't beat the GW humans deck, but that I wanted to try against the GW Energy and see how I fared, since I saw him play Bristling Hydras and Blossoming Defenses which I knew I would have to be careful with.
The first game I was able to Essence Scatter, Cast Out, and Stasis Snare as needed. This was also the only time I played Dovin Baan. He was ok, but yea, he needs to go. When he went to attack with his one Hydra for the win I cast Blessed Alliance to turn the game around and beat down with Gideon and Gearhulk. He did generate a mad amount of energy, so of course, I forgot to side in the Solemnity again.
The second game was very close. He had a Electrostatic Pummeler and Hydra out with about 12 energy with me around 12. I just played Gideon, AoZ and made 2/2 blocker. I had Fumigate in hand, but was missing the fifth land. He attacks, I block the pummuler since pumping all that energy into it would've definitely killed me and pumping it into the Hydra would've just gotten me close to dead. I was waiting for the pump spell, but he didn't have it. I then rip an Island, cast Fumigate, make a token, and breathe a lot easier. From there I kept generating 2/2 tokens and played whatever I needed to keep his creatures down (A timely Spell Queller was helpful as well). I was then able to swing in with 4 tokens and the spirit, wait for his draw, and receive the handshake.

Definitely a deck that you need to think through what removal/counter you're going to use. Will have to test against Zombies and Mono-Red to see how they play out. For the future, I'll probably take out these cards:

I'm guessing Solemnity is probably just too slow to affect the board. Probably replace them with more counters and card draw (the 4th Glimmer; the scry was more worth it and the energy helps the Confiscation Coups. I still like the one-of Kefnet and mix of 4 Gideons. Playing only 2 colors I almost never had a color-screw problem. The 2 Blighted Cataracts and one-of Westvale Abbey were great.

    Have fun! Smile

posted a message on UW Draw-GO Control
In reference to the planeswalker build, I crafted this for GameDay:

The weekend got booked up, so my youngest and I went to FNM. I drafted and he went ahead and played it. They only had 4 rounds with the SCG event being nearby and he went 2-1-1; losing to New Perspectives and beating Mono-black Zombies and BG Energy. He could've made it to game 3 against New Perspectives, but his opponent had double Dispel on the crucial turn and being his first match with the deck he was sure he misplayed a little.
He split in the final round with Temur Marvel (he wanted to play it out afterwards, but we were getting ready to leave) I guess he did play a fun match against Marvel afterwards and he said he crushed it). I asked him how he enjoyed the deck and what cards he liked, didn't like, etc.

He really enjoyed Gideon of the Trials. Depending on the match-up he could push him out there on turn 3 or wait until turn 5 with counter back-up. He could then wipe the board and start swinging. He used each of his modes multiple times and won a game he would've lost against the zombies deck because of the emblem. His opponent had to attack Gideon to have a chance to win, but that gave him the time to Pull from Tomorrow for 4 and Anticipate to find a Fumigate to wipe the board.

The one-of Dovin Baan was useful and was like having a 2nd Gideon of the Trials on board. With the card draw he was able to get them both out a few times and together and they really stalled out the opponent. He thought one copy was fine though.

Kefnet the Mindful was very good as a late game finisher and kept him flush with cards. Casting a Pull in response to an attack was always good. He thought maybe go 2 in the main, but has decided to stay with the 1/1 split.

Both Stasis Snare and Cast Out were great. A little mana intensive, but if they aren't swarming the board you can pick things off pretty well.
We originally had 4 Censor in the deck, but replaced them with something else (as suggested by Shaheen Soorani on his Friday SCG article). In our case it was with 2 Anticipate and 2 Torrential Gearhulk. No regrets there. He did get to do the dream combo of Gearhulk into Commit // Memory on opponent's end step. Wink

He sided in mostly more counterspells and hardly played any of the sideboard creatures (I believe he sided in Linvala once).

From how RavynVT is describing his deck, it looks to play similar, where you're countering and removing things, but allows for a wider threat base. You do sacrifice some control in the early game to get them in play, but once they're there, it was great (at least according to him). Smile

posted a message on Five Color Aggro
    Hey all,

I've been posting ---> here for awhile with my tournament reports for the past year and a half developing an all creatures version of the deck. The link will take you to my last post (Part 1 of this Part 2). I have another 5 reports before that (including testing with Mystic Snake) Wink

    Part Two:

A few weeks ago my youngest and I went to Game Swap in Mason, OH. They have standard and modern FNMs on a regular basis so we decided to try the modern event. Here’s what I played:

As you can see, most of it is very similar to my previous iteration with these changes:
    Main:
    -2 Fiend Hunter
    -2 Deputy of Acquittals
    +2 Reflector Mage
    +2 Grim Lavamancer

    SB:
    -1 Reclamation Sage
    -2 Meddling Mage
    +2 Nekrataal
    +1 Kor Firewalker

The switch from Fiend Hunter to Reflector Mage was to gain tempo. Many times I would play the hunter and it would be destroyed at the most inopportune time. With Reflector Mage I can make sure that creature doesn’t come back for a turn and it gives me more time to beatdown. I added in the Lavamancers as a test to gain a little more reach in the game and utilize my graveyard somewhat.
In the sideboard I felt one more Firewalker was needed to help against red decks and decided to completely take out the Meddling Mages for what was supposed to be Shriekmaws, but I wasn’t able find them, so I used Nekrataals. The mana is more difficult, but they are a ‘human’ assassin so there was that benefit

    The tournament was 5 rounds:

    R1: Mono-Green Stompy 2-1
He was playing Obstinate Baloth, Kalonian Tusker, and few other random green dudes and pump spells (Rancor, Vines of Vastwood, etc.). His deck ran fine, but once I was able to get my roadblocks up, he kind of stumbled. I still lost the first game and unfortunately by my own hand. I had a Thalia, Guardian of Thraben on the board at 14 life. He goes to attack with a couple of 5/5s and had two mana available. I didn’t block because I could have gotten him on the crackback. He played a kicker’ed Vines and I scooped. Right after I did that it hit me that he wouldn’t have been able to pay for the kicker and the spell with only two mana. Durh. I wasn’t going to make that mistake again. Fortunately, I took the next two games with some appropriate pressure, Siege Rhino, and Reflector Mage’ing some Rancor’ed creatures. I did side in the Nekrataals, but never drew them.

    R2: Ad Nauseam 2-0
Not much to see here. I played Meddling Mage on turn 2 both games naming Ad Nauseam and he was stuck while I beat down. (second game I mulled down to 5, not to get the mage, but because the other hands were junk. I just got lucky). His only outs were the one burn spell they play and a Slaughter Pact, but drew neither. I imagine without the mage it would be a harder match-up and you’d really have to put aggressive pressure on them.

    R3: Naya Burn 2-1
This was a hard match. I’ve known my opponent for quite a while and he’s a very competent player. In the first game, I did try a little fun move where he suspended a Rift Bolt on his first turn and right after on my second turn I played Meddling Mage naming Rift Bolt. Unfortunately, (yet, expected) he had a Lightning Bolt to free up the Rift Bolt, but it was a good try). He did what burn does; Goblin Guide, bolt, Monastery Swiftspear, Atarka's Command. I somewhat stabilized at 7 with a couple of Siege Rhinos and of course he then draws the Lightning Bolt & Boros Charm to do me in. Game 2 I slammed a turn 2 Kor Firewalker down (which he was surprised to see) and then watched it take a Path to Exile (which he brought in for the Rhinos). It did open the way for a rhino and with a little back and forth I took the game. I was able to take the third game pretty well since he was stuck on two lands for a few turns. He did get me to 7 and drew his third land, but at that time I had a Firewalker in play and a board advantage that he wasn’t getting out of. He might have been able to do something if he had the fourth land (I believe he had Atarka's Command and another burn spell, but not enough mana). With more creatures, I had the better long game and could use my guys to absorb his small creature advantages, but have to stay at a healthy life total.

    R4: U/W Thing 2-0
I came out of the gates with a T1 Champion, T2 Lieutenant, T3 Reflector Mage on his Thing in the Ice, and T4 Mantis Rider. He couldn’t counter anything with my T1 Cavern of Souls naming human. He then proceeded to scoop phase. The second game was quite a bit tougher when he played his Vedalken Shackles. He got three TiTIs in play, yet didn’t draw a lot of spells to trigger them. After a few turns, I had a 5/5 Champion, 2 Rhinos, and a few other creatures going back and forth with him stealing one, me attacking, him chumping with my guy, me playing another creature, and so on. He did get a couple of his TiTIs to one counter left and could have flipped them, but by that time I was still at 20 and be able to play a Rhino for the win if he did (he was at 2).

    R5: R/G Tron 0-2
At this point it was somewhat late and I promised my wife I wouldn’t keep my youngest out late like the last time (3am isn’t when you want your wife to wake up and realize no one else but the dog is home). I was the only 4-0 player so I was paired down against a 3-1 and we decided to split and play the match for fun. He got out the turn 3 Tron and then played Ugin, the Spirit Dragon the following turn to wipe my board. I did get him down to 3 or 4, but that’s as far as it went. I did keep him from playing Karn Liberated with a Meddling Mage (He Ancient Stirrings’d for him).
He ended up winning the second game, but I was ready to go I played pretty loose. I got him down to 2 and forgot to attack him with my Avalanche Riders earlier, so I did have the win, but played it after I attacked for no reason (I had a Spell Queller on a Sylvan Scrying). I also Meddling Mage’d the Wurmcoil Engine he searched for, but it was a bad call. He ended up having 2 Oblivion Stones in hand. I was thinking of blind calling them out, and should’ve since I had a quick clock, but choose poorly. After the game, I was discussing my sideboarding with my opponent and the one thing he disagreed with was taking out the Anafenzas. He felt that she would have put more pressure on him if in play and he’s probably right.

I’m still not sure about the two main new changes; Grim Lavamancer and Shriekmaw/Nekrataal. Probably due to the mana base and being able to cast it for the evoke cost I’ll more than likely switch to the Shriekmaw. I’ll keep the Lavamancers for the time being, just to see if they’ll be of use. I’ve liked every other card in the main and have been able to use them (I didn’t really use the Reclamation Sages, but I like to have one main in case a Blood Moon gets past the Quellers). I’ll be taking out Lavinia since lately she hasn’t been very relevant. Never had a problem with her cost, just I haven’t run into a lot of sweep the board creature decks (Merfolk, Elves, etc.). Otherwise I’d leave her in. I do plan on putting the third Meddling Mage back in the sideboard. With the different combo decks, he just stops them cold.

Good luck and have fun. Smile

Chandra, Flamecaller has risen up in the last couple of days. She's holding about the same as Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet now.

posted a message on [[Official]] What is the most pimp card/deck you've seen or owned? (SEE RULES!)
Worked for about a year to complete this set. Tried to trade for them only to make it a slight challenge, but ended up buying the final one (T-Chinese).
Haven't worked to make a collection in awhile, but I really like this card.

    The languages are:
    Top Row:
    German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese
    English (center)
    Bottom Row:
Japanese, Chinese (simplified), Russian, Chinese (traditional), Korean

Hoping to get Jung Park to sign them eventually. Grin

posted a message on TCGplayer Preview Card: Hissing Quagmire
The inherent reach the BFZ & OGW manlands have is somewhat lacking. To compare:

    WWK manlands:
    Celestial Colonnade
    4/4 flying & vigilance
    Creeping Tar Pit
    3/2 Unblockable
    Raging Ravine
    3/3 +1/+1 on attack
    Stirring Wildwood
    3/4 Reach
    Lavaclaw Reaches
    2/2 Increase power

    BFZ and OGW manlands:
    Shambling Vent
    2/3 Lifelink
    Lumbering Falls
    3/3 Hexproof
    Needle Spires
    2/1 Double strike
    Hissing Quagmire
    2/2 Deathtouch

4 of the 5 Worldwake lands have power 3 or greater, 2 of them have a toughness of 4, and 2 of them have a decent form of evasion. Only 1 of these lands haven't been used much in competitive formats outside of their standards lives (maybe 2 if you include Stirring Wildwood).

All of the OGW lands (so far) come across as little beaters that are designed to encourage creature combat and the abilities on them are pretty standard and uninspiring. Not that they're bad, just not a lot of variation between them. All-in-all, I'm sure they'll have their place and will be fun, but they do have a 'powered down' feeling.

posted a message on noob request: suggestion for single foil online store that ships to canada?
Hopefully you've already gotten your card, but for reference, you can probably pick any of the well known online stores (SCG, ChannelFireball, TCG, Coolstuff, etc.). I'm sure they'd be able to help.

I just did a quick check on Google for "Canadian MTG stores" and Wizard's Tower looks pretty close to you:

    http://www.kanatacg.com/

and they have an Enthralling Victor for 0.90 CAD.

    Hope this helps. Smile
