I dont understand why he would have build a program to run trials just to collect data. I assumed just using probability would be the cleanest route. I'm not sure I understand his method entirely though.
@ Dice Bag Ideally I would like to make something where you just list the remaining cards in your deck and each cards mana cost and it would just calculate. To answer your question I plan on playing TES.
Calculating the probability is too hard in these cases actually. It's far easier to use a computer program Monte Carlo
I have entirely cut out my T1 discard as well for more Hymns. I love that card, and am trying to find room for a fourth in the main. I'm unsure about counterspells, because I tend to think of us as a tap-out deck, though if it's combo we are after, then I could totally see a playset of Flusterstorms coming in over Shardless. I've tested flip Jace and he's pretty decent. Surprisingly useful defensively, good card filtering, and flashback is solid. Often is the target of removal, but whatcha going to do. I also am not a fan of meddling mage.
^^ This. EOT Gifts untapping with 7 mana is basically an auto-win. Even if you don't manage to win, you gain insane CA since you're actually spending one card from your hand (plus maybe sac'ing an artifact or exiling a second card from your hand), but it takes several cards to fight through. Plus you will likely get the extra turn, since that seems the wrong place to disrupt.
I've had games won or lost off of working out what the OP's deck is, what cards are likely in their 75, and appropriately casting Cabal Therapy on turn 2
My current list is below. I really like Hidden Dragonslayer, but have been struggling to find the right balance in my list. Explosive Vegetation is my favorite card in this deck... it's a million times better than Shaman of the Forgotten Ways because it doesn't die to removal. I really really wish they had reprinted Rampant Growth, but I guess we'll have to made do without it
There is actually currently an ongoing discussion about some changes to the format layout, including this, here. There is a big difference in the way that tiers in Legacy work from Modern though, insofar as outside of the current top decks, almost anything is viable up to play skill. In 2015 so far, 6 decks have more than 5% of the top 8 slots each, while another 19 different decks fall between 1 and 4% of the top 8s. But yes, this is a current topic of disucssion.
If a 2 mana land ramp, a la Rampant Growth comes out, I'll probably switch away from creatures and have all my creatures be dragons and maindeck the radiant flames. I played Valakut once upon a time, and would be thrilled to play a valakut-like dragon ramp deck!
I was actually wondering what happened to you a year or so back. Good to know you're alive and kicking. Almost at the graduation finish line, or is the torture needing to continue on?
Hahaha... Yeah. I tried to keep current, but it was too hard with studying and things.
I'm starting my fourth year (I'm at the University of Chicago), and my friend's cube is getting me more and more back into the game... we'll see what happens. I might play standard for the first time since Scars block this coming school year. The hope is to get a job that supports a Legacy habit, so maybe in a year or two I'll be playing it again.
As for BfZ... the new lands duals will be amazing budget options for many decks, especially control ones, as running lots of basics and fetches is par for the course here. Brutal Explosion will be looked at, if only because it's the only other card in existence to do what Venser does. Stasis Snare will probably not see play. Shame it's not ORing with flash D: Radiant Flames is not worthless... it's pyroclasm that kills 3/3s for 1 more. I don't think any of the other cards are worth even pausing to read from a Legacy POV.
1) decks that basically don't exist: The Gate, Aggro Elves, MUC, and Dreadstill.
2) decks that consistently fail to do well: Affinity (I cry, but it's true), Dragon Stompy/All In Red, Aggro Loam, High Tide, Enchantress, BWx StoneBlade/Dead Guy Ale, Pox
Another idea would be to create a higher level than "Established", "Dominant/Decks to Beat/Top Decks/Whatever" Leave Developing for decks that are, as archetypes, in flux, established for decks that are not but are not major highlights of the current meta, and the new category for decks that consistently currently do well (revised maybe every 6 months or ban change, whichever is shorter) a la the source. There would be a firm criterion for the top decks, whereas established would have its current fuzzy boundary.
Hello community Excited to see this thread as I've been gone for the game for a few years - got a little too busy with being a college student, and mostly I got to borrow cards to play Legacy from friends in the area. Alas, perhaps I'll start building a real Legacy deck soon. I do own my beloved Affinity, but it appears to be a bad choice in the moment.
Ok, thanks, anyone else liking Rabblemaster to "get'em" in those grindy match-ups (or when you're playing a combo deck you have to race)?
That's an area of discussion where more info is needed. A couple people tried Rabble, but he's fragile and doesn't make an immediate difference topdeck. Rabble is only good once removal is sided out by the opponent. I tried 2x bitterblossom to force them into trading removal for tokens on the clock, but it didn't make that much of a diff.
Grave Titan is my go to dude for the grind-ups, and this is after failing to replace him. The second beater spot should also be a singleton, and I've been seeing aggro so Olivia Voldaren is doing dmg right now. I'd say a Rabblemaster could fill that spot.
1 or 2 Vendilion Clique and/or 1 or 2 thoughtseizes should be enough for those fringe combo decks though.
I really like Pack Rat. Removal that actually kills off Pack Rat is something you will virtually never see. Usually I try to get two on the table and just sit there, replacing them as they die, and whittling away their life total. It's also nice that you can EOT drop a third and suddenly untap with 9 power on the board.
Dude swings with a goyf into my snapcaster
Cast Snapcaster targeting KCommand
Chump Block with both snapcasters
Cast KCommand making you discard and returning snapcaster to my hand
Cast snapcaster casting lightning bolt at you
"oh by the way, there are no instants in the graveyards now so goyf is a 3/4 so it dies..."
I really rather like Fulminator, and am afraid of something like OSTone just ending my game against Tron if I use Blood Moon. I considered running Stone Rain, as it's a little bit cheaper to recur off Snapcaster, but I've found myself bringing in Fulminator against Jund as well to attack their manabase, and there the body is relevant. Additionally, it's slightly easier to cast, and Stone Rain would be the only RR spell in my list (I run damnnation over Anger and Vandalblast over Shatterstorm)
I used to play Moons but I have begun switching over to Fulimators now. Tron actually has more answers to Moon then Fulmimator Mage as quiet often they will board in 3-4 Nature's Claim if they think you are on Grixis Twin and Mage is better in more match-ups.
Yeah, I did get them confused, but also hadn't realized Stone Rain was Modern legal. Does anyone run it? On paper it looks very similar to Fulminator but arguably better by hitting basics and recurring with snapcaster beats recurring with KCommand, and better mana cost

No deck in the second list has had more than 5 top 8s in 2015 so far: http://www.mtgtop8.com/format?f=LE&meta=100
