LucidVision posted a message on [MKM][CUBE] Surveil Dual LandsPosted in: Cube Card and Archetype DiscussionQuote from Goodking »Man, I like most of even the mid-tier manlands better than the Surveil lands. I have enough searchable lands and I think activating creatures from amidst my lands will win me more games than a one-off Surveil. And they are just more interesting gameplay wise, subjectively. If I were to go to another land 'cycle' I'd be focusing on a mix of these and Canopylands I think.
the fetchability (and to a lessor extent the land types) is the kicker for me. I think they are close overall.
Something that could be biasing me:
In the MTGO vintage cube I routinely pick fetchlands P1P1-P1P3 (more commonly close to P3). The average play skill isn’t very high, so they are criminally under drafted. I routinely get 2 fetchlands in my decks increasing my perception on the quality of the surveils.
When you start your draft with a fetchland, you have 6 dual lands available for you to fetch for a 2 color deck and in a premium position to play a high quality splash or two.
the cycle of surveil lands has contributed to a noticeable uptick in my assembly of quality mana bases. -

Can't go wrong with either. Maybe split it down the middle and keep Raging Ravine and replace Restless Vents? -

The ceiling is actually quite broken. Think Fractured Identity that can steal instants / sorceries, your opponent never gets to take advantage of their actual thing being in play, and it comes with a 3/3 flyer. -

steve_man posted a message on [CUBE] Worldgorger Dragon ComboHere's a mini draft report on my first attempt at playing with Worldgorger Dragon Combo, and was very close to winning the whole draft. Game 3 of the finals I had turn 1 Inquisition of Kozilek and saw that my opponent had no removal. I had Animate Dead + Bazaar of Baghdad + Worldgorger Dragon assembled on turn 3, but my opponent managed to draw his Snuff Out by thenPosted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion
Draft picks - https://magic.flooey.org/draft/show?id=etTX5areY0zuwi3lTOvpEpNq7kE&deck=ahRzfmV1cGhvcmljLWRpb2RlLTYxNnIRCxIEZGVjaxiAgID1uJ-cCQw
I was not confident in the draft since all my P1PXs options felt pretty underwhelming. I just so happened to stumble upon shoe stringing this deck together, and it worked out MUCH better than I thought it would. I assembled the combo at least 4 times throughout the draft.
The first time I assembled the combo was when I was on the backfoot vs a control deck. Charming Scoundrel was very key here for several reasons:
- Provided treasures to cast Kiki, which I would then copy to make more treasures to hardcast Worldgorger Dragon.
- I would not have been able to kill with Mount Doom because I didn't have a red source that didn't deal damage to me.
- Although I was hellbent, I could have sacrificed Sunbaked Canyon to draw a card and then use Charming Scoundrel to dig through my deck to eventually assemble the infinite with Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward. This wouldn't have been ideal though because I knew my opponent had a sweeper. Although this would've been my only option if I didn't have Mount Doom in play.
Here I was able to assemble the combo on turn 3 with Bazaar of Baghdad + Animate Dead. I pulled this off on turn 3 at least twice, although the second time was in the finals when I got blown out by Snuff Out.
In one game I really didn't have any other options than trying to win with raw Worldgorger Dragon. It really wasn't a bad idea since it was 2 turn clock. My opponent being in Jund colors probably means he had to destroy it, which would leave him vulnerable to the combo if I topdecked Animate Dead / Necromancy. Unfortunately he had Snuff Out. I ended up top decking Animate Dead the next turn and could have forced the game to a draw if I played my Sunbaked Canyon instead of City of Brass.
Some takeaways
- The deck is really fun! It's the ultimate Rubegoldberg combo, and the potential risks really adds a whole new fear factor that has everybody at the edge of their seat the whole time. I also didn't really have to go out of my way to add the combo to my cube, I only had to add Worldgorger Dragon / Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward / Bazaar of Baghdad and swap out a Rakdos land for Mount Doom.
- The combo gives a lot of new cards new roles / opportunities to be valuable. Courser of Kruphix / food generators can gain you infinite life, anything that generates clue / blood tokenscan draw your entire deck, etc.
- At first I thought Bazaar of Baghdad wouldn't be necessary since I already have the surveil duals and a whole bunch of other discard outlets, but I found it to be pretty crucial, especially as a fast, repeatable discard outlet that lets you dig.
- My tip for drafting this deck is to get your reanimator pieces first and let the Dragon / Abdel Adrian wheel. This combo is essentially just an extension of reanimator (with a small blend of Kiki-Jiki), so it's only going to be a strong as your reanimator core. And if for some reason Dragon / Abdel Adrian don't wheel, then you have a signal that somebody else is potentially going reanimator and will take the Animate Dead effects at all costs. -

I don't agree with this take. I think you're looking at this too much as a mana sink and not enough as a modal 2 drop that can go crazy with token generators. The value of this card doesn't come from how much mana you can pump into it, but with how many tokens your deck can pump out. It's rarely going to scale beyond 5 mana, but that's not unrealistic since green pairs best with this since it has the best combination of ramp and token generation. It's a pretty reasonable 2 drop considering the 5 mana mode it has , this is essentially a different take on Intrepid Adversary really.
Then I think what you're looking for might be virtue of loyalty
I like this card a lot more than Virtue of Loyalty, FWIW. Virtue can't ever pump other tokens as a 2-drop, or provide 6 power for 5 mana on its own, or drop multiple artifacts to the table ...which are the things that make Squadron appealing. -

LucidVision posted a message on [MKM][CUBE] Steamcore ScholarI've been jamming this a lot in LSV's cube the past few days and it's overperformed my expectation.Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion
Is it a mid-high pick? no.
Is it one of the weaker blue 3 drops in a 540 cube? Yes.
That said, it's a solid all around archetype enabler that has impressed me in decks that value self discard and card selection.
The part about the card I underestimated most was the 2/2 flying, vigilance body.
Blocking 1/1 flying tokens, attacking -> trading on defense in a tight race, evasion for initiative/monarch. It's not great, but it's pretty annoying and has surprising utility for a creature who's value is mostly based on it's ETB trigger. -

wtwlf123 posted a message on [KTK] Dig Through TimeI think it's still a good spell, and it performs well in the kinds of decks that want it. But I could certainly see cutting it from small cubes; slots are competitive.Posted in: Cube Card and Archetype Discussion - To post a comment, please login or register a new account.
