@cbgirardo: Thank you for the well thought out comments. I have some rebuttals for your points, I hope you don't take it as me being defensive or something.

    Quote from cbgirardo »
Sasky, I have to disagree with you on a couple of points. Firstly, Abrupt Decay hits Liliana of the Veil, Cranial Plating, Oblivion Stone, and many other noncreature permanents. It's also much better against Twin because of the uncounterability. Secondly, Path helps the opponent too much to be worth it over Decay in the main, I believe.

True, but lili has already gotten value against you when you decay her, and o-stone can be fired off the turn it comes into play so decay does not work very well against it. It's obviously good against plating. I think Path hits stuff that is more relevant i.e. fat creatures. We have Pridemages to deal with artifacts and enchantments anyway. I can see decay being much better if you don't run Pridemage.

Secondly, many decks in Modern can win through infinite life. A list was posted a couple of pages ago. You said this in your own post, so why do you not want to run Blood Artist or Redcap? I think Blood Artist suffers from being a bad card in a vacuum and requiring a four-card combo, but with infinite scry, we can scry into Redcap, Chord, or Collected Company/Melira/Anafenza to finish our combo to do infinite damage. How do you intend to win against the decks that can win through infinite life if you don't have any damage combo?

The point is that our combo is vulnerable and complicated to set up. It's nice to have around but should not be the keystone of the deck.

You win against decks that can win through infinite life the way pod did - beating down with stuff.

    Quote from cbgirardo »
Thirdly, Melira is actually relevant for more reasons than you might think. Against Affinity, it completely turns off Inkmoth Nexus (an Inkmoth activated while Melira is out does have infect, but effectively can't deal any damage). Also, it allows us to get infinite damage without Redcap by stacking a ton of Bolster triggers and then letting them all resolve.

I agree with this. I don't like redcap and blood artist in this deck, so this is definitely a way to get a combo kill.

The second Anafenza has been quite a dud for me anyway, so I will try a 1/1 split.

    Quote from cbgirardo »
I honestly don't think this deck is that much worse to counter-magic than Pod was. You just have to play a bit more intelligently when your opponent could counter your Collected Company. I was patient and fired it off at appropriate times during States against all of the decks running counters, and didn't have an issue. Voice of Resurgence helps a lot too.

It's weaker because we cast everything, while pod just needs to resolve pod and the opponent's counterspells have all become useless. Our deck is still fantastic against countermagic though thanks to Voice of Resurgence.

In my opinion, the time has passed for Pod to be running Decays, and run Paths instead.

Path is slightly worse against Twin decks, but in a world of primeval titans and siege rhinos, path seems the much more solid option. It also makes the tron matchup a little better.

I have been brewing with this deck as well. I don't want to post a list yet as I feel that I'm still a couple of cards off a 'perfect' list.

I do want to say that Congregation is bad, as is playing any creature that is more expensive than a 3-drop.

I am sure that 3 Chord of Calling is right for this deck, but am unsure if 4 Collected Company is right. CC is bonkers nuts insane, but sometimes you just don't want to cast a 4 mana spell. Sometimes I finish a game with 2 copies of CC stuck in my hand. Still, you always want to see it.

Chord is non-negotiable - it allows you to play very good silver bullets both in the main and in the side. You don't want 4 because it's expensive to cast and gets remand-ed quite often.

The combo is fine, but I don't think Redcap or Blood Artist is what you want to be doing. Anafenza-Finks-Aristocrat/Seer is good enough. Blood Artist is low impact, and Redcap costs 4 mana, so you don't want them in this deck. You also don't want too many pieces of the combo, because other than Finks, Anafenza and Aristocrat are pretty weak cards on their own. Infinite life does not win you games against quite a few matchups (decks with inkmoth nexus or alternative kill-cons like hive mind). I tend to board out Anafenza and Aristocrat against any matchup that has alternative kill-cons and/or runs lightning bolt.

The deck has a very strong aggressive midrange game that is close to the power level of pre-ban pod. You must play 3 Townships or you will lose out on the main way of winning with this deck. When building this deck always keep in mind that your plan A is to kill people with little disruptive creatures filled with +1/+1 counters.

I don't think it's worth running Melira. She is much easier to cast than Anafenza, but she does nothing against every deck that is not infect. Even against infect she does not win you the game automatically as immense Blighted Agents are still a headache.

The deck is actually better than pre-ban pod in some ways, and worse in some others. Instant speed CC is a big plus, as is not needing to sacrifice your creatures or taking a bunch of phyrexian damage off your pod. You can also play Stony Silence and Fulminator Mage unlike Pod, which makes the Tron matchup a lot better. The downsides are not being able to play 4 and 5 drops (losing Siege rhino and Lark is saddening), CC being quite random, not being able to chain creatures, and being much weaker to counter-magic.

I actually ended up going 4-0-1 with a much different list punting the first game of the semis hard TWICE and leaving because I couldn't play in the finals anyways due to time issues. Changed the bloodmoons out at the last minute and it was a great decision as the other cards i put in pyroclasm and izzet staticaster were great. Although I had the staticaster in the deck at one point I never saw it but pyroclasm won two matches. I'll write a tourney report if you want when I get time.

I'd be interested in a tournament report as well as your decklist if you have time.

Brewing a rug twin build for a gpt tommorow. Heres the current list:

Id like some general critiques on blood moons in the side, peoples thoughts on maybe a lavamancer and a full twin package.

Also here is a list that top 8ed a pptq:
    RUG Twin

I like roast in UR Twin, but not in RUG Twin. You want to cast tarmogoyf on turn two or leave remand up.

Lavamancer is pretty good as a 2-of in the main. He lets you take both the aggro and control role.

Blood moon in the sb seems fine if you know how to play with it in this deck. I personally would not make RUG twin a blood moon deck, but I can see how it can work.

Well, tron and affinity do see quite a bit of play in mtgo judging from what I've seen in recent streams. But I wouldn't run that list in a paper magic tourney unless you plan on running into a LOT of them there as well.

I was thinking of bringing the exact list to a paper tournament actually.

His sideboard and maindeck is actually quite tuned to beat more than just tron and affinity. Fulminators are good against Bloom Titan and any control decks you might run into. I would also bring in some vs affinity and infect to deal with inkmoths.

Stony silence is good mostly only against affinity and tron as you said, but these are such bad matchups that it is correct to have 4 stony silences. I've played with Jesse Hampton's three copies and I really want a fourth one.

Twin and infect are pretty good matchups, he has four sideboard slots for burn, and there is enough removal and discard to handle a spectrum of decks.

Overall, I think his list is actually well-tuned to a relatively open meta with mostly tier 1 decks. I can see it possibly crashing against rogue combo decks, but fulminators are really good against most funny brews and he does play eight discard spells maindeck.

What does everyone think about ecobaronen's 4-0 (twice!) list? It seems rock solid and very focused.

The matchup with the Abrupt Decay midrange decks have become much better than the old pre-cruise UR delver thanks to the addition of black.

Just beat them the same way as delver always tried to beat junk/jund - Blood Moon.

People looking to play this deck should bear in mind that this deck is beary difficult to pilot optimally. Therefore, the bearier of entry to this deck is skill and not cost. However, once you bear the responsibility of getting enough reps in with the deck it should reward you with an unbearably high winrate as you fight through bearly winnable games with nothing but your bear hands.

I'd go with a 2/2 split on Tasigurs and Myths. Myth can win games out of nowhere if left unchecked, yet Tasigur grants card advantage and fuels delve at the same time, while being an unconditional 4/5.

I can't support only 2 Myth Realized in any deck. It's always a 3-4-of or bust for me. Against aggro/combo/ramp, you need to stick Myth Realized on Turns 1-2 in order for it to do anything useful (yes, this includes MR being able to chump-block against aggro). It's rather like Delver of Secrets in that aspect.

I'd go with a 4/X MR/Tasigur split, a 3/X split, or a 0/X split. Tasigur is a late-game topdeck bomb and an early-midgame solid play, so I'm fine with fewer of him. Whenever I play a poor topdeck (such as MR), I tend to need a lot of it in the deck.

My MR Mentor build has 22 lands, no 4-drops (although I do want a touch of life gain back, Vault of the Archangel generally underperforms hard for me no matter what deck I play, I'm leery about 4-drops when I play less than 23 lands, and MR wants moar Seachrome Coast), 4 MRs (the early ones are monsters, the late ones sort of suck but that's the price you pay), 1 Tasigur (used to be 2; wouldn't mind a second again), 3 Mentor (something had to go for 4 MRs, and I basically always have to have a noncreature spell in hand whenever I resolve Mentor, anyway, so he behaves more like a 4-drop for me), 2 Slaughter Pact (free spells are so good with Mentor), 1 Murderous Cut (I suspect 2 would put too much stress on my graveyard, especially if Tasigur #2 comes back), and 1 Think Twice (it's not triggering enough Prowess compared to Souls, I'm not self-milling it often enough, and 3-mana Flashback is freaking slow--I'm pulling it for something else that triggers Prowess really soon--should it be life gain or a better cantrip like Anticipate?).

I don't like splitting MR and Tasigur because MR doesn't fill the yard and Murderous Cut is a fantastic card that I always want to play 2 copies of in this deck. Playing MR and Tasigur together means less spells filling your grave, which makes Tasigur and Cut both more difficult to cast.

I like Pacts in the SB more because of the "nonblack" clause, and I think Cuts are just better. Free spells are great with mentor, but I don't think this deck is actually that mentor-centric.

I'm also interested in playing Anticipate. Currently I'm running 4/4 Serum Visions and Thought Scour, so I'm not sure if I want any more cantrips. I'm not running any form of permission though, so there's no tension with permission spells.

Anyway, this is the list I'm settling on:

The MR version I tested plays 4x MR instead of 3 Tasigurs and 1 Thoughtseize. The TS is moved to the side with one less Timely.

I am building this deck as well. Got everything besides the sideboard and the remands. Not sure what I'll play instead of remand. Probably negate since we are already packing so much removal.

I have cut all permission from the deck in favor of the full discard suite and found that it works better.

    Quote from Hype »
Seems reasonable. Narset would probably only be a sideboard card anyways as there are too many matchups where she's awful maindeck. What does your list look like with the Myth Realized? I'd like to add 3 (I remember listening to a podcast where Patrick Chapin said that 3 is the ideal number of a card if you wanna maximize your chances of drawing it in your opening hand but not drawing multiple copies throughout the game) but not sure what should get the axe.

Narset is terrible in the matchups she is supposed to be good in as well. She has very little impact compared to, say, one of the sorins or even something quirky like ojutai's command.

I recommend cutting tasigurs for myth realized. I think for this deck you'd want one or the other.

I've also tested Myth Realized - it's amazing. The only thing is that I am unsure if 3 or 4 copies is correct. You always want to see it, but almost never want to see multiples.

What have you cut to make room for Myth Realized in testing?

    Tasigurs.

I have no idea whether MR is actually better than tasigurs though - both are powerhouses.

I'm actually going to play with tasigurs again over MR just to compare him to my experiences with MR.

Perhaps it might be possible to cut mentors for MR and play tasigurs.

I have tested Narset. She's really bad.

Her +1 whiffs a fair amount - and it's back-breaking because you literally wasted a turn.

Her -2 sounds good on paper, but rebound seems to be too slow for this format. I've often stared at my hand and realised that rebounding my spells aren't doing much. Being casted on your next upkeep really sucks.

I'd recommend just sticking to one of the BW Sorins.

I've also tested Myth Realized - it's amazing. The only thing is that I am unsure if 3 or 4 copies is correct. You always want to see it, but almost never want to see multiples.

I played in a team unified modern event today, using UW Tron. I basically had zero crossover cards with my team mates (Suicide Zoo and Dredge), so I got to use my full list.

I went 3-2 in individual games, which is the same record as my team.

I will be typing a succinct report.

    R1: 1-2 vs. Affinity
G1 was rough - he thoughtcasted 3 times and I saw no wrath.
G2 I got elesh norn out early and sealed the game.
G3 He thoughtseize'd my wrath and had enough damage to close the game (many counters from arcbound to etched chamion) when I got elesh norn out.
My team mates won their matches though.

    R2: 2-0 vs. Black Moon
This was my friend - I knew he ran blood moons and contaminated ground main as well as many discard spells, and thought it would be a difficult matchup.
G1 I got to emrakul through a blood moon - yes I reached 15 lands (12+3 signets to be precise. This was ONE turn away from his Ajani Vengeant going ultimate.
G2 I Unburial'd Iona, naming black, and he scooped.
My team mates lost their matches this time, so overall we lost as a team.

    R3: 1-2 vs. Time Walk
You'd think this is an easy matchup, but I can assure you it is not.
G1: He managed to force his chain through my remands.
G2: He scooped to T4 Iona.
G3: He topdeck'd a gigadrowse on the turn I could cast Emrakul. I remanded two copies of gigadrowse so that I had enough mana for a negate, but he managed to combo off through my one negate.
My team mates were 1-1, so we lost overall.

    R4: 2-0 vs BW Tokens
This is a very easy matchup if they don't chain discard spells.
G1 Elesh Norn, and he had 3 bitterblossoms in play.
G2 Ugin. Ugin is so ridiculous vs tokens - literally nothing in their entire 75 deals with him if he lands.
Team mates were 1-1 this round, so we won overall.

    R5: 2-0 vs Living End
G1 I dumped Iona and Elesh Norn into my yard with Thirst. He either did not want to LE those fatties in for me, or did not have it. Either way my wurmcoil engine closed the game.
G2 He played a fair game of magic. We are great at fair games of magic.
Both my team mates won their matches as well.

Under the tab decklists, I post each decklist that I use in a Daily event. For the next iteration I am testing Sigarda, I just haven't had a chance to play in a Daily in a few days. In paper I play Mindslaver lock instead, I think it's better, but I'm more inclined to play Emrakul online just because of the feasibility.

    Holy mother of god...

Also, to make this post non-spam: I've been liking Pithing Needle in the sb. It helps vs Lili, Fulminator mages, and Karns. Smile
